Sad. One video about the Adams' reaction to slaves building the White House, a true event, and everyone on here is debating everything from whether slavery would've eventually died out (rendering the Civil War unnecessary) to how many black people are in prison.
HBO is not doing this to guilt-trip anyone, because this is how it actually happened. Argue against it and you're arguing against history being told as it really happened. Take what you will from it.
"I pray Heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house and all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but HONEST and WISE men ever rule under this roof." --- John Adams
@terrinyc29 You would do well to understand that this is a clip of historical fiction, not what actually happened. Slaves did help to build the white house, but I think this clip overestimates the extent to which that is true. In addition, John and Abigail Adams were staunch abolitionists.
I'm so so tired of people singling out the United States as the only "big evil perpetrator" of black slavery in the history of western civilization. Slavery was the economic foundation for dozens of world powers going back into antiquity. I am NOT justifying slavery, rather am saying that it was a cruel reality of the world for thousands of years. Slavery was carried out by many ethnicities and races upon each other for hundreds of years. This country paid the price for slavery.
@tachikoma747 this country paid the price for slavery ? hmmmm lets see, jim crow, racial profiling, black are 80 % of the prison population, and only 18 % of the us population, undereducated, ect, ect. all of this could have been prevented if the fathers simply thought about what they where doing they simply had thair own personal gain in mind iam sure it had to be in the back of thair minds that one day slavery woud come to an end, but they didnt care they passed the buck, same as today in dc
@prowlifik Thomas Jefferson said in effect in regards to slavery "God is Justice and I tremble for my country when it thinks His justice sleeps." Jefferson felt we would pay the price for slavery at some point. I do agree that with black poverty and crime we're still reaping the effects of slavery today, I'm just not sure how the Second Continental Congress would have approved the Declaration and Constitution with provisions in there to end slavery.
@prowlifik I agree w/ most of what you say, but hind sight is 20/20 I do not think any one really foresaw the centuries of moral & psychological devastation slavery brought to the US. BTW the African Americans represent only 13% of the US population (Hispanics are the now the biggest minority at 15% according to the 2010 census), which makes your other accurate statistics even more demoralizing.
@colossusrising sir your mking my argument for me, only 13% of the pop. but 75% of the prison pop. and the employment and economic situation is always more dyer in the black american comunity, and sir i will also advise you that those numbers are very placeable in the hispanic-american comunity as well, america faces along day ahed of her when her number 3 and soon to be number 1 ethnic groups are unemployed, underemployed, inprisoned, undereducated, with no hope in sight
@prowlifik If you care 2 read my comment more carefully, you'll find you're preaching 2 the choir. I only disagreed in the statistic that African Americans r 18% of the US population, which is not the case. Thus, adding to your point that even at only 13% of the people in this country, it's this community that suffers the most social & economic ills; Hispanics do suffer very similar disavantageshowever, Pew research has found that 2nd & 3rd gen Hispanics social&economic outlook is comp 2 whites
@colossusrising calmdown, 18% was to high i made a mistake, i dont know where pew coducts there polls but its must not be in the innercity where i live
@tachikoma747 and i say those things a s a proud BLACK AMERICAN MAN, i love the fathers and read every thing and watch everthing i can about them i was born and raised and live in PHILA. but the fathers had failed us on the issue of slavery they kicked the ball down the street from 1776 to 1865. wahsington, jefferson, and many more held slaves, they knew that if they stoped slavery it would put them in financial DOOM and they wouldnt do that. the needs of many will always be ahead of the one
countless good americans like thomas garret and william still fought slavery tooth and nail. the quakers rejected it back in like the 1600's. dont they get counted with the bad?
I wonder why so many white Americans get mad at black Americans when they talk badly about their country? Can they not see it comes from the hypocrisy that America has based it's entire foundation on? The rest of the world gets it, even Asian countries now, and yet white Americans, many who claim tolerance, get defensive of their history. Every country has good and bad. People hate America because they pretend to come from, and be, all good.
@karma212 Funny that you mention hyprocrisy b/c the knife certainly cuts both ways, in my experience the world sees the US as the ultimate evil, pretending that whatever atrocities committed in this land, have never been done before, however when you start reminding them of the many horrors current & former world powers have comitted & keep committing "suddenly they're defensive of their history" & when it comes to tolerance, the US is certainly in the top ten compared to many a country.
Thats unfair, quite frankly, I dont give a damn about slavery? Why? Because its not my problem. Im White, I have no problems with black people, and my black friends DO take offense to my position, but I simply feel it should be forgotten. I know my ancestors fought for the South, I know they were too poor to own slaves, as well. The CSA should not be remebered for slavery, nor should the pre-civil war USA. They were just internal problems, like the economy, immigration, and crime.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus "they were just internal problems" not really sure how you can call the crime of kidnapping innocent people from another hemisphere, cramming them into ships(where many of them died), and then bringing them here and selling them into bondage for the rest of their lives, an internal problem. I am also not sure why you think it should be forgotten. It is a part of history.
It is a part of history used to divide the American people for political gain by both parties. The Slave Trade was ended in 1803. That was bad. The Slave Trade goes against all my principles, but the slavery after that was, a small problem which would of phased itself out.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus Small problem? tell that to all the people that were held in bondage, who were forced to work or get whipped. Tell that all families that had sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, husbands, and wive sold away from them to never be seen again.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus it is not guilt I feel. It is sorrow and sadness for what happened, and sympathy for the victims, that I feel. I feel sorry for you because you do not have the sense and heart to see that slavery and the holocaust were more than small internal problems. I must have one big attitude problem in order to see things as you do. That is why I feel sorry for you.
I feel sorrow as well. When I see the starving children in Haiti, I feel bad. Thats why I put money in the Haiti jar at the Gas Station. However, that is a internel problem of Haiti, and through private charity, not the US governments money. Slavery wasnt a good thing, but it was not the Federal govts job to get rid of it, and it slowly was disapearing by 1860. Slavery, the Holacaust, they are all in the past. Im tired of constantly reminded, and socialy obligated to feel guilt.
Yes, Yes I do. I dont think the Jews should of gotten there own country for it, and the Holocaust Muesuem (which I visited) had the gall to blame AMERICA for not intervening. It was not our problem, just as Slavery wasnt Germanies (well, Germany wasnt united until 5 years after the war), or Britains problem. Not my problem.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus You should give a damn for slavery, they built this land for free, and many whites got their ideas from slaves, with crediting them. It's like forgetting 9-11 attack on America, or forgetting all the wars America took place in. You don't think most white people didn't inherit free labor while black peoples inheritance is contrast.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus No, slavery, colonialism,Imperialism, will scar the white race forever until they all repent for their sins, and concede that they as a race inherit free labor, blood money. Concede that they stole Ancient African history from blacks, and many Ideas. Your race of people should of never commit such atrocities if they hate the feeling of white guilt.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus White people it's not their fault that they are brainwashed, it's the white powers fault. They are brain washing black and white people, the white gov. doesn't care for white people
The White government? You mean the ZIONIST government. They use slavery as a tool to keep Blacks angry at Whites, they are dividing Christians. YOUR brainwashed.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus The white powers are causing whites to have tension towards blacks, and many blacks like me reciprocate, hence that's how racial tension starts. That's an old roman trick to blame Jews for everything, that's the thing I hate about whites, they play the blame game.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus The modern black panthers are bad, the old black panthers were worthy and good. You need to look at the documentary of black panthers, the old ones, in I guarantee you will be ashamed of your white government. And no, i'm no black panther you little bitch, you racist piece of shit, you are brain wash, maybe you will understand later down the line how much of a queer you are.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus I'm a homophobic by calling you a Queer? LOL... Did I say "You are a faggot"... You moron, the term faggot is meant to insult and denigrate queers like yourself. I'm just telling it how I see it
"And no, i'm no black panther you little bitch, you racist piece of shit, you are brain wash, maybe you will understand later down the line how much of a queer you are"
You said it. Its their. Dont try to hide from it, your obivously a biggot!
Queer and Faggot are the same. They both are homophobic words. You issued the slur , without even noticing until I brought it up. Your obivously a biggot. Admit it!
@HalfBornUnicornFetus No i'm no bigot, you can't make me admit something that i'm not. Since you said I didn't know Queer was offensive then you should know I didn't mean no harm by it.
You knew Queer was a hate word. You yourself said it, and you didnt even notice. Your homophobia is natural. Your a biggot. Otherwise you would of noticed you said it. Admit it!!
@karma212 "they pretend come from, and be, all good" you sir are talking to one white American that does not pretend that America was all good. I know we mistreated African Americans and the Native Americans and others. I know we are not prefect. But, I still believe there is much in America to be proud of.
@karma212 I think what gets white Americans mad at black Americans is when black Americans act like everything is still like it was before MLK. We still have a ways to go with race issues in American, but I do believe we have made great strides. Things are not as bad as they were back then.
fuck emm all niggas... african slaves build up the white house so hence you should no all American presidents are all slaves because they are living in the slave building hahaahah...the white house..untill the name has changed
@mrlank59 It's official name was the Executive Mansion for over 120 years, not the White House. That name is a modern invention, which started usage in the 20th century.
@MurderByFluoride why go back to africa? if i did that i wouldnt be able to fuck your white women or make fat stupid racist crackers like you mad. go usa go.
@prowlifik and at the same time, prevent black people from progressing in there own race by actually mixing DNA from other races causing a decline in physical performance, seriously you should read into this man im not telling lies. in about 10 years from inter-racial breeding, Africans wont have the edge.
Typical, talk about haow bad slavery was but still continue to reap the benefits, Adams was not great, just another slavemaster, but in his case he dint hold slaves so there for the tite of Inverted Slavemaster applys, the more and more we try to find the good in the founding fathers the more we see how short they fall in the good writen about them.
@tachikoma747 NO i would have not, but understand this, slavery was to expire 20yrs after the decloration was inacted, why do you think the capital was moved to DC from phila ? so the slaves could build the new capital, witch took longer then 20yrs, i know that slavery had to remain as is inorder to keep the souths vote to break from britain but the population and power laid in the hands of the north, the main reason why slavery didnt end is because of washington.
our founding fathers didnt care to free slaves ether, Ben Franklin established an anti-slavery thing because he was a Quaker and Quakers are against slavery
"The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were. . . . the general principles of Christianity.”—John Adams to Thomas Jefferson on June 28, 1813--John Adams, The Works of John Adams, Second President of the United States, Charles Francis Adams, editor (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1856), Vol. X, pp. 45-46
"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union."---Abraham Lincoln, August 22, 1862
@Christian121y Lincoln-Douglas debate at Charleston on September 18, 1858. “I will say then that I am not, nor have I ever been in the favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races.” These were early beliefs of Lincoln and in fact many Americans, what is remarkable is that he saw the injustices of slavery and changed his views openly.
The first man to call to prayer for muslims was a freed slave who was freed by their prohet. Unfortunately, like all good there comes bad and slavery wasn't abolished in the M.E. Mainly because unlike politics a man of religion is no match for men in power and they wouldn't give up theirs slaves. No matter what the founder of islam said. To this day it still goes on even tho the ruling families are black and linages were slaves themseleves. Ironic
Not. It was institiuted by the spanish...blacks just became middle men who captured slaves for profit. True it was founded IN africa but not by black africans.
@chjackson82: The African slave trade to the Americas was facilitated by Arab slave traders. Slavery as an institution has existed since the beginning of time, slavery exists TODAY in Africa (Sudan).
The idea that slavery is unique to a single race or nation is absurd. The Unites States inherited the economic system of slavery from the Europeans and it took nearly 100 years and 500,000+ lives to finally end this abomination.
@NYhistorian I disagree...I believe the moors(muslims) were present in spain and portugal since the like the 8th century. And not necassarily in servitude. Thats why you'll find so many spanish words rooted in arabic
@chjackson82 Actually muslims invaded and ruled southern Spain for 800 yrs, then slowly but surely, all the little kingdoms surrounding them united & kicked out the invader in the "Reconquista", I think right around the time Colombus found America. Now remind me, exactly what words in Spanish are rooted in Arabic?
@chjackson82In the east, Arabs started the African slave trade in about 400AD. In the west, it was instituted by the Portuguese by the late 1400's. The Spanish eventually took over with the most profit. Common known fact.
Slavery did not become evil until Harriet Stowe wrote her book and the North could not make a profit with slaves in the field. However they did make a profit on the slave trade. The ports of New England were packed with slave ships, their fields full of crops to make rum. numerous rum factories flourished.
New York became rich on the slave trade. The only reason Lincoln went to war was loss of revenue when the South seceded.
@NJRocks281 Lincoln also went to War to bring back to South and to free the Slaves, thankfully Lincoln unlike John Adams made the Emancipation Proclamation freeing Slaves in the South, the North also had Slaves but the North did not force them to work in the fields, and Massachusettes was a big supplyer of Slaves in the Triangle Trade
@kasrkinmullet its called Strategy AL knew if he killed slavery in the heart of the confed. and establish "border states" then those border states would fall in due time, seems like that idea worked pretty good.
@NJRocks281 LMAO Lincoln went to wr to keep the south in the union.. but what he did destroyed the republic.. because the republic was formed specifically to have states be the most powerful entitty and after lincolns war states were basically meaningless
@23mbtx23 No they weren't. The Articles of Confederation made the states a powerful entity; the Constitution clearly states that supreme power is held by the Federal government. Please go back to your civics class and read.
@23mbtx23 "This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States...shall be the SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND." The republic was formed because the States had too much power and the federal government was unable to function adequately. Go back and read the ENTIRE Constitution instead of picking out the one part that supports your claim.
@ElTee842 republic was formed cuz the articles of confederation werent working,Not cuz of the states. Please educate urself & read "treaty of Paris" which recognized the Independence 13 separate times to each colony/recognized them as independent sovereign entities. The constitution shall be supreme law of the land u say?THATS WHAT I SAID!INCLUDING THE 10TH AMENDMENT/ENUMERATED POWERS OF THE FEDERAL GOVT!The FED GOVT cant do nethn other than enumerated powers,EVERYTHING ELSE IS THE STATES/PEOPLE!
@23mbtx23 Yes, the Articles weren't working...because of the States. They could never agree and hence a stronger federal government was needed to get things working. The Treaty of Paris doesn't define the US government, the Constitution does; as a federal republic. Read Article 1, Section 10 to understand the things that States are FORBIDDEN to do. And as the school system you've attended has granted me a degree in history, perhaps you should study harder. Amateur.
@ElTee842 It also specifies what the fed govt is forbidden 2 do.It doesn't say feds can do whatever they like. As a published history author, id advise u 2 try not 2 go toe2toe on achievements. As a 24 y/o published author w/ another due next spring,Id say I have skins on the wall 2 talk.U mention a section of the constitution that prohibits the states whereas the whole document set boundaries/rules 4what the fed govt can/cant do.The people have power/created the fed govt not the other way around
@23mbtx23 Someone published you? What university? A 24 year old author of history? Wow, I know some professors that'd be mighty pissed on how you got so accomplished. The truth is, that even though the States have powers not delegated to the Federal government, the Federal government has greater power than the States. The States cannot dictate to the Federal government.
Speaking of publishing, mind offering the name of your book? I'd love to look it up.
@ElTee842 not a university.. journal of military history and the company: military history press.... "Great War's Finest: "A study of Imperial German and Austro-Hungarian air services in ww1" will be out spring 2012. 5 articles in journal of military history/cross&cockade magazine/Great War magazine in UK
@23mbtx23 So then, your degree is in military history then? And a journal is interesting, though the book publishing company seems...uncertain. I'm quite at a loss, since you don't seem to have the credentials to have a book published in a serious scholarly work. Is there a place to review these articles?
@ElTee842 Military history major, Political sci is simply an interest. LMAO serious scholarly work? Journal of military history?military history press uncertain?I hate to shatter your ego but I could care less how you feel about the subject of military history and where it ranks on your "importance scale". You may go to each scholarly journal/magazines webpages and order yourself copies.. come to Texas and ill sign them for ya. ;) You may also check out amazon.com "last chance for victory"
@ElTee842 Credentials to have a book published? I dont do the highly subjected world of University press' and the entire field of higher education since most college level profs have such egos that it is truly a "my way or the highway". As a son of an author of over 25 books published on Napoleonics and Civil War military history, I naturally am acquainted with all the publishers who published him and have had the advantage of exposure to the publishers that way. Still have to do the work tho
@ElTee842 correct, thats dad,one of the most decorated books on the Gettysburg campaign. You go from theres no way your published to "oo your dad helped you" think whatever you want.. the truth is my work is in a different field and is completed by myself. Im sorry you tried to pull out the "i have more credentials than you" maneuver and it blew up in your face. You COULD say congrats on military history but we agree to disagree on politics.. but I see yo wont do that so Ill be the bigger man
@23mbtx23 I asked for 'your' credentials initially, not your fathers. Your father could be the greatest historian in the world, but that doesn't mean you are. Why would I say congrats on military history? That doesn't even make sense.
@ElTee842 as said before... sorry the credentials thing blew up in your face.. facts remain I am published in multiple scholarly journals, and have 30+ months at the ww1 aviation archives at UT-Dallas called "FERKO COLLECTION" with that info translated and published in english for the first time. a study on,German/Austro Hungarian air services.. im trying to be nice. Politics is opinion. i agree to disagree w/ u. I truly am glad to see other interested in history and i wish u the best
@ElTee842 As stated I'll go ahead and be honorable for the two of us.. congrats on your history degree.. in all honesty it is good to see any American who even knows or cares about history. I dont know your favorite subject within the field but I do hope you have the energy and interest to publish/speak on the subject as I do. The more interest in history the better. All the best -MB
we all know that the fallcy that Lincoln was concerned abot doing the right thing, was just that-a fallacy-he himself said that if he could have ended the civil war without freeing a single slave, he would have
Yes, but it the U.S. continued with a slave-based society long after most nations had abolished this inhuman practice. By the eve of the American Civil War, only the U.S., Brazil, and Cuba still maintained the practice of slavery. All other countries in the Americas had long abolished slavery, including Mexico.
The Founding Fathers are romanticized far too much. The fact is for all the speeches and talk of freedom and equality they founded a slave-based society.
they are romanticized..yes I felt that too. I read of many who wanted to do something...Franklin, Jay, Quincy adams, etc, etc. Don't know if they felt that they would not be able to do anything if they remained under British Control...aybe that's why they compromised the way they did There were abolitionists on both sides of the Atlantic to -Wilberforce, quakers, and others in Britain....Wilberforce was actually writing to john Jay about the subject.
Slave-based society has already existed so how could they founded it? The real achivement of American Reovolution was the empowerment of human being which led inter alia to the moral condemnation of slavery. Northern states did it so. Since then the institution of slavery became an evil, although previously it was regarded as something as natural as feudalism.
It's easy to look back in history and say "You should have done x". Truth is, they had to compromise ... and compromise and compromise... or else there wouldn't have been a country.
The people that burned down the White House in the war of 1812 never set foot in Canada prior to that event, they came from Brittan and landed in Maryland then marched to D.C.
It should be noted they were later chased out by an act of God.
That's the white house that we burned to the ground. But don't feel bad, Canada's parliament buildings were burnt twice. Once by Americans, and once by the Canadian people. They were sort of ticked off at the government.
The name of the HBO miniseries is "John Adams". It's the best film account to date, imho, of the American Revolution. It's certainly the most accurate regarding John Adams.
i am so happy that america had finally frown up .....
i wish all of the african americans that help biuld the white house would have seen obama in the white house as a presidente
god bless the united states and as for you people in the south that are bitter you can always move to canada with your traler and your bush beer and rotten teeth
and yes i am white from new jersey hahahahahhahahahahahahaha obama 2008
i am sorry that you and 38,000,000 people that watch fox lost the election. i am a liberal and whiet and i am very proud that he will be in office for not 4 but 8 years. maybe if you guys didnt support palin you would have had a chance.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
whats wrong with palin you bigot? Is she too woman for the white house you bigot? Is jindall TOO indian for the WH you bigot? Is condi too black for thw wH you bigot?

@karma212 Funny that you mention hyprocrisy b/c the knife certainly cuts both ways, in my experience the world sees the US as the ultimate evil, pretending that whatever atrocities committed in this land, have never been done before, however when you start reminding them of the many horrors current & former world powers have comitted & keep committing "suddenly they're defensive of their history" & when it comes to tolerance, the US is certainly in the top ten compared to many a country.
colossusrising 8 months ago
@karma212
HalfBornUnicornFetus 8 months ago
@HalfBornUnicornFetus "they were just internal problems" not really sure how you can call the crime of kidnapping innocent people from another hemisphere, cramming them into ships(where many of them died), and then bringing them here and selling them into bondage for the rest of their lives, an internal problem. I am also not sure why you think it should be forgotten. It is a part of history.
warblerab 7 months ago
@warblerab
It is a part of history used to divide the American people for political gain by both parties. The Slave Trade was ended in 1803. That was bad. The Slave Trade goes against all my principles, but the slavery after that was, a small problem which would of phased itself out.
HalfBornUnicornFetus 7 months ago
@HalfBornUnicornFetus Small problem? tell that to all the people that were held in bondage, who were forced to work or get whipped. Tell that all families that had sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, husbands, and wive sold away from them to never be seen again.
warblerab 7 months ago
@warblerab
Get over it..To be be overly frank-Shit Happens. Slavery would of phased it self out without the war by 1870.

Sorry? Im sorry that you feel a constant guilt for a crime you didnt commit. I hope the weight is lifted from you one day. I threw it off.
HalfBornUnicornFetus 7 months ago
@HalfBornUnicornFetus it is not guilt I feel. It is sorrow and sadness for what happened, and sympathy for the victims, that I feel. I feel sorry for you because you do not have the sense and heart to see that slavery and the holocaust were more than small internal problems. I must have one big attitude problem in order to see things as you do. That is why I feel sorry for you.
warblerab 7 months ago
@warblerab

@warblerab
HalfBornUnicornFetus 7 months ago
@HalfBornUnicornFetus You should give a damn for slavery, they built this land for free, and many whites got their ideas from slaves, with crediting them. It's like forgetting 9-11 attack on America, or forgetting all the wars America took place in. You don't think most white people didn't inherit free labor while black peoples inheritance is contrast.

@prowlifik so if you were writing the Declaration of Independence, what would you have done? abolished slavery?
tachikoma747 10 months ago
@tachikoma747 NO i would have not, but understand this, slavery was to expire 20yrs after the decloration was inacted, why do you think the capital was moved to DC from phila ? so the slaves could build the new capital, witch took longer then 20yrs, i know that slavery had to remain as is inorder to keep the souths vote to break from britain but the population and power laid in the hands of the north, the main reason why slavery didnt end is because of washington.

The first man to call to prayer for muslims was a freed slave who was freed by their prohet. Unfortunately, like all good there comes bad and slavery wasn't abolished in the M.E.

@23mbtx23 No they weren't. The Articles of Confederation made the states a powerful entity; the Constitution clearly states that supreme power is held by the Federal government. Please go back to your civics class and read.
ElTee842 3 months ago
@ElTee842 Nope, go back to your class and read the tenth amendment. The states have thepower not delegated to the federal government
23mbtx23 3 months ago
@23mbtx23 "This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States...shall be the SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND." The republic was formed because the States had too much power and the federal government was unable to function adequately. Go back and read the ENTIRE Constitution instead of picking out the one part that supports your claim.
ElTee842 3 months ago
23mbtx23 3 months ago
@23mbtx23 Yes, the Articles weren't working...because of the States. They could never agree and hence a stronger federal government was needed to get things working. The Treaty of Paris doesn't define the US government, the Constitution does; as a federal republic. Read Article 1, Section 10 to understand the things that States are FORBIDDEN to do. And as the school system you've attended has granted me a degree in history, perhaps you should study harder. Amateur.

I'd love to look it up.

they are romanticized..yes I felt that too.

The people that burned down the White House in the war of 1812 never set foot in Canada prior to that event, they came from Brittan and landed in Maryland then marched to D.C.
It should be noted they were later chased out by an act of God.
