I discovered Tom Waits last year, and fell in love with his music. Nearly a year later, and I'm still finding gems like this that I'd never heard of before.
If somebody asked me who Waits sounded like, I'd have to say Kurt Weill...I can't say that about any other songwriter from that generation. I think Waits would have been successful musically anytime in the 20th century. His music is that unique.
There are only three people that I can think of that have the poetic abilities that Tom Waits has. He is just as creative if not more creative than Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan yet hardly anyone knows about him (compared to the other two). People gotta discover this stuff
@slooshywarbles I don't think Tom wants to be that famous. I certainly can't speak for him, but.... anybody can be famous in this day and age. He could if he wanted to, I guess is what I'm saying.
@guineapiggyman I love Tori almost as much as I love Tom Waits...but there is no comparison that can be made between their individuality. There are no better versions.
@guineapiggyman Yes and no. Yes for the fact that she made it her own, and the piano is nothing short of beautiful. If there is someone who is worthy of doing a cover of this song, it is her. At the same time, the simplicity in Waits's version adds a unique quality to the song, which may unfortunately be lost in Tori's version. Regardless, this song is outstanding, and both versions transcend anything you come across today.
@Katyjen Huh? Either you're joking (which I hope to God that you are), or you're bored standing in line tweeting this while you wait to get inside the Justin Bieber concert you saved up for.
horrible singer? dude, only tom waits could have put this incredibly ironic soul into such a sublimed and pathetic song. thanks to him its distanced reflection about the nature of the time more than another pretentious funeral song
@Stjimmyrulesx I'm not sure whether or not you're trolling. But whether or not you can appreciate the raspy, soulful voice that Tom Waits possesses is irrelevant. A singer's voice doesn't matter. It's the pureness and feeling of whether or not the person is being truly genuine that makes a singer who he or she is. Tom Waits is honest and genuine and is in no way a horrible singer. He brings to the table what I believe no man or woman is doing anymore.
I had no real idea who Tom Waits was before I picked up Rain Dogs and listened to it for he first time. The whole thing had me enraptured from the beginning, but when I got to this song, and specifically the line "the things you can't remember tell the things you can't forget..." I knew I was in love from then on.
I"ve been with tom since mid 70s when I saw him on the dinah shore show. He did waltzing matilda and step right up! Just turned 64 and this song is my birthday tune.time waits for no one but Tom Waits for everyone!
The lyrics are so sublime he doesn't even bother singing the great tune that goes with it! True poetry, but a little cryptic for me at times. 'Your memories're like a train etc. and 'the weeds in your heart' are turns of phrase that get me. One of the truly consistently great lyricists, but there are a handful of others I would rank right up there with him. Wanna know who? - you'll have to ask me.
@peazythatsmeazy Well, I'm a (self-described) poet too and speaking with authority, the most poetic song in English is 'Gavin's Woodpile' by Canadian singer-songwriter-guitarist-genius Bruce Cockburn. It's on his 'In the Falling Dark' album, released in the mid-70s. Cockburn's lyrics on that whole album are unsurpassed. I'm not taking the piss, just inviting you to compare the styles, that's all. Both Waits and Cockburn are idiosyncratic geniuses and neither could write for each other. Enjoy.
@EwolDJ definitely man. I'll be sure to check it out. one of my friends brought up "And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda," which is also a good call as far as poetic songs go. thanks for the suggestion, mate. :)
@peazythatsmeazy Glad to help. The song 'In the Falling Dark' from the eponymous album is on YT complete with lyrics (and my comment) and lots of other Cockburn stuff. So is 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda', not to be confused with 'Tom Traubert's Blues' or the unofficial Australian national anthem. There's a beautiful interpretation by Joan Baez up on YT, it's a great anti-war song (WW1). An even better one I think, also by Eric Bogle, is 'Willie McBride', also with WW1 theme. Explore.
Such a beautiful song!! It reminds me of when I was little, my dad always listen to this music (cd Big Time) me and my girlfriends always played a story of his music...this number I like the most..It;s something for my funeral I think//
I am with no words one more time. What a river of feelings come to me, it's a mixture of rage, tears, love and a huge thirst of understanding. Hell! From a cold cold ground
Are there any more..calm songs like this by Tom Waits?

The Tori Amos version was much better. Tom Waits is a brilliant songwriter, but he sings like he's about to pass out.

Tori's one of my favorite artists, but she's got nothing on Tom's original. Her cover just seems to drag.

Simple, beautiful. Tom is one of the two best lyricists alive. Dylan's the other.

To give you a glimmer into Waits' brilliance, consider the lyrics in the chorus, only 6 words but arranged and repeated to say so much.
Kind of hits the soul.
