Joe Meek had a unike sound. He was brilliant with tunes, although he did not play any instrument himself. His life story is better than any book I have read for a long time. Telstar is great filmand gives some informations about Joe's life. However, i think that Joe was a bit nice than his 'film- Joe'. And i did not know that he was blakmailed because of his homosexuality. I did not know about Bernard Oliver either. Anna
@scar78201 Bernard Oliver was my uncle and was NOT a rent boy! He had dyslexia and was involved with the wrong sorts of people and ended up being grossly mistreated and sexually assaulted until someone brutally murdered him. There are articles that state that he had done some odd jobs for Meek. There are also articles that mention two notorious jewish gangsters who had a pimping ring for peodifiles in Tattingston, coincidence? Please get all the facts before posting. R.I.P Bernard
Wow...thisis a template for Morrissey. Fucking brave this ...for the times.Joe paid a price for it though, and got blackmailed to the hilt,by every new conquest he made. Apart from the Telstar royalties scam,no wonder he was bloody depressed.
On February 3, 1967, the 8th anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, Meek killed his landlady and then himself w/a single-barrelled shotgun he'd confiscated from his protegé, former Tornados bassist Heinz Burt.
In January 1967, police in Tattingstone, Suffolk, found a suitcase containing the mutilated body of Bernard Oliver, a rent boy who had associated with Meek. According to accounts, Joe was concerned he'd be involved in the investigation when London police said they'd be interviewing all known homosexuals in the city.
His efforts were often hindered by paranoia (Meek was convinced that Decca Records put hidden microphones behind his wallpaper to steal his ideas), drug use and attacks of rage/depression. His then-illegal homosexuality put him under further pressure; he'd been charged w/ 'importuning for immoral purposes' in 1963 and consequently subjected to blackmail.
The movie 'Telstar' is fantastic and reflects all the madness of the music business in the early 60s. It's about the life of Joe Meek, a real pioneer, suffering from mental illness. He was taken to court by a french composer with claims of plagiarism. Meek never received royalties on his big hit 'Telstar'. He committed suicide in 67 just a few days short before the verdict was given that he did not 'steal' the song. It's such a tragic story. Go and watch the movie - it's brilliant!!!
There's a word for anything Joe Meek put his hands on - CREEPY! I can only imagine his hideous lovers...

So much more to Joe Meek than the "Hollywood-ized" movie version.

@scar78201 You should note that all you say is cut-and-pasted from the Wikipedia Joe Meeks entry.
