  • Absolutely wonderful!!!

  • Magnificent video Stevie! Your title was dead accurate too. Fred was a genius and Michael managed to improve on that genius with creativity and better synchronization.

  • this edit is so well done. This is awesome!!

  • Quick question who's the teacher and who's the student??

  • Fascinating. I think Fred would enjoy that Michael used his moves. It is a form of homage. To be the best Michael studied the best and it just goes to show how great Fred Astaire really was.

  • when smooth criminal came on at around 1:00 I think I shit my pants

  • professional job

  • bah purée...Oo

  • great job

  • Great job! Video Dance TV is featuring this video as the DANCE VIDEO OF THE DAY. Cheers!

  • It would be so epic being able to see Cyd Charisee and Michael Jackson dance together to this song. I can picture him watching "Band Wagon" for the first time. Fred was his super hero.

  • Good job!

  • Wow, just wow. I heard one of MJ's inspirations was Fred Astaire, but this comparison of sorts just blew my mind. Amazing, just amazing!

  • we are who we were - thanks man.

  • Very cool. Thank you.

  • Wow, it is no doubt that Michael was inspired by Fred from your video. How did you learn that? Most of us don't even know who Fred Astaire is. Thank you!!

  • @teefukushima

  • That's a very good video ;) congratulations :D

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!

  • Mr Briggs this video is as meticulous and thorough and well executed as the artists in it.

    Bravo. youtube Oscars i say.

  • The Great Nicholas Brothers strut their stuff on The Jacksons 1977 television variety show. Michael and his family definitely learned from the best!

    See videos on my channel!!

  • WOW!

  • The Great Nicholas Brothers strut their stuff on The Jacksons 1977 television variety show. Michael and his family definitely learned from the best!

  • ...GET REAL! Michael Jackson was a Sloppy,Rank Amateur and couldn't "Hold a Candle" to Fred Astaire!

  • This is blasphemy.

  • Michael dances like Bojangles, the Nicholas brothers, James Brown and Sammy, just like Astaire tried to do. Please. blacks don't imitate whites. don't get it twisted. CS.

  • I was completely not aware of that, but that draws a lot of parallels.

  • The amazing thing about Mike,He learn by watching his masters at work<3

  • Amazing!!!!!!!! You really put a brilliant end point in a clear question!!!!

  • Amazing. Brilliant work!

  • Isn't that Julie Newmar @ 1:30? Gorgeous!

  • Comment removed

  • brilliant! i love them both very much so.

  • great job man!

  • Fantastic - thank you.

They had huge respect for each other. Michael dedicated his book to Fred Astaire and I think Fred's quote was "I didn’t want to leave this world without knowing who my descendant was. Thank you Michael!"

  • Anyone who can match FA in ability is a master... and regardless of anything else, MJ was a master. I hope that Hell has a special place reserved for the quack doctor who killed him.

  • very nice video, makes me want to go watch Fred and Michael movies now and throw on my taps (dont think ppl below with like me)

  • Actually funnily I have, read his autobiography and seen what Lisa Presely has said..he did not look up to Elvis and Mick Jagger, everyone else on your list yes but not them.

  • GREAT VID, EXCELLENT CONGRATS ... :)

  • Well, now we all know where MJ got his lyrics, his dance moves, his costumes and is choreography from! lol. Not to mention the huge influence James Brown had on him.

  • @8bobthebuilder Michael looked up to a lot of people.. James Brown, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr. Mick Jagger, Elvis Presley... He mixed them together.. and put in something new... Then he became what he was.. and what he always will be. =)

MJ was a perfectionist.. and people know that =)

  • @Breey97 Umm sorry actually he was not influenced by Elvis at all, he even says in his moonwalker book and and I have never read or watched anything that said he was inspired by Mick Jagger.

  • @101wess Well then I guess you ahven't watched all of the interviews... besides... listen carefully to what Lisa Marie said years ago.. =)

  • @Breey97 sorry He neva mentioned Elvis as his inspiration fact!

  • @Visaliny -.- watch his interwievs.. and Lisa Maries oprah interview... and u will see. ;)

  • @Breey97 ppl can't neva trust Lisa..watch Harlem 2002 where Michael called Elvis a theft..LMAO

  • @Visaliny Believe what you want.. And imma believe what I believe. ;)

  • @8bobthebuilder There's no claim that all (only some) of MJ's moves/etc were inspired by FA (esp. Smooth C). MJ of course has works that are more inspired by others. MJ inspires & each work's influence varies (e.g. Thriller's influence is unique). Artists' influence can transcend one work too. Recognizing influences on some works doesn't deny other career influences. MJ acknowledged learning from certain artists like FA. And it's interesting to look at "Master" - teacher links across artists.

  • @saraco678 Yes, MJ imitated / acquired style(s) of costuming, choreography, lyrics, from many artists BUT Fred Astaire and James Brown had more influence on him than any one else I believe. My comment was meant to quell the claim that MJ is somehow wholly [completely] original -- I believe that is precisely why this video is here: to show us how MJ was influenced. And P.S., Thriller was not wholly unique -- it was inspired largely by Landis' American Werewolf film.

  • I was replying to your comment "Well, now we all know where MJ got ... from! lol." That ! & lol seemed 2b sarcastic against the video's claim, but from your reply, it wasn't meant 2b sarcastic. There's no disagreement w/ your follow-up, except u misread my comment---I meant the influence of Thriller (like any work) is unique...as the various influences on MJ's were unique--e.g. FA's on SC vs. Landis on Thriller. Misreadings r typical as we can't hear intonations in writing. We basically agree.

  • @saraco678 @saraco678 Yes, I overlooked your point in your second-last post that indeed each infuence on the artist is unique -- & that is absolutely true!

I have seen MJ live in concert twice, -- since 1987, I have never seen anyone live dance as well as MJ. He has a natural talent that others could not attain with practice.

Was always told of Fred Astaire & it's not till now that I'm able with the advent of YouTube to appreciate the similarities and genius of each of them!

  • This is really nice! The first time I saw the Band Wagon my jaw dropped open because of course a light bulb went off in my slow brain as I realized where MJ got his Smooth Criminal stuff from. I was mesmerized and I fell in love with the movie. I have always loved watching the classics anyway but I had never even seen or heard of The Band Wagon until two years ago. I can't wait til my daughter watches it with me... She's gonna flip!

  • @quetnique THATS ONE OF THE GRETEST ALLTIME FILMS, AND MY DOUGTHERS 4 AND 4 YRS JUST STARTED TO DANCE LIKE LITLE ANGELS AND THY LOVE THE FRED ASTERE AND ALSO GENE MOVIES.... :)

  • Thus begins my YouTube obsession with Fred Astaire!

  • Unbelievable!!

  • This is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • H-o-motherfuckinT!

  • i eff-ing loved this. i like old musicals too and its awesome to see that all the MJ magic i witnessed as a kids was inspired from the greats that paved the way for him.

  • Great tribute to two of the best entertainers.

  • cyd charise's entrance to smooth criminal has COMPLETELY changed my world. Thank you.

  • Thanks for this clever video. I had no idea Michael's dance style waas heavily influenced by Fred Astaire until now. The clips from The Band Wagon look so cool with Michael's music.

  • great video. Astaire was amazing. I love the old movies. Find myself reaching back in time more n more as these newer generations produce garbage in film n music.

  • MJ copied many other as well, look at this vid called: "Michael Jackson's Origins of the Moonwalk".

  • Every second has something to admire - well crafted.

  • That was awesome!

  • MJ really did hi homework. wow amazing. why can't other artist be this amazing ugh damn this generation

  • whatis this song called

  • as a former dancer, an still a admirer this is really cool! TOTALLY paralele to eachother in many ways

  • StevieB you are awesome for doing this. Thank you.

  • Brilliant! I give you lots of good kudos!

  • voces tem razao parabens

    congratulations you is right

  • I love this!!! Thanks so much.

  • great....thank you

  • Fred Astaire is a frickin' PIMP.

  • ggreat video, the best! amazing!!

  • What a great video. It is clear that a LOT of thought and research went into what we see and enjoy here. Thanks a bunch for the effort and the pleasure I got when I watched. People can say what they want and have their opinions and I'll keep my opinion to myself but one thing cannot be denied; MJ was an artist.

  • Amazing and beautiful. Genius begets genius.

  • I for one never been a big fan of MJ, But I respect him. I always love learning from the classic movie and you can still learn from them. This showed MJ that he really study to be a great dancer.

  • @Hugon101 michael didn't "study" to be a great dancer.he was phenomenal at 9!how much study do u have to do to be a phenomenon at 9?it's dancinfg talent, simple

  • Everybody is inspired by someone. Fred Astaire was too. He did not invent tap dance. He was inspired. Art is about being inspired and take it to another level and add your own. Fred and Michael managed to do that, while I don't think many of MJ's recent imitators are able to do that. When I see Chris Brown or Usher, I only see imitators, not someone like Michael who took it to another level.

  • Comment removed

  • If you watch the entire Band Wagon movie, you'll see other phrases Michael used. Michael enjoyed re-inventing, and Fred enjoyed seeing his creations taken to another level. A couple of greats that admired each other.

  • Fred Astaire is not the teacher of Mickael Jackson, the teachers are the Nicholas brothers

  • This is absolutely amazing! Growing up my dad always told me that if I wanted to know MJs heroes, I had to watch guys like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. I had no idea that they had such a direct impact on MJs career!

  • simply brilliant

  • best travaille de mc jackson

  • Obiamente Michael Lo Mejoro

  • owwhh i love this thing, its nice to know where comes the mj's stuffs origins...

  • Exelent vid :)

  • I watch this every morning, get's me really pumped for my workout... ANNIE ARE YOU OK?!

  • Nice try, but not even close. The same costumes and "lyrics"..do not make the case..Jackson was not even close to Astaire...in talent, costumes or steps.

  • @tallpaul521 are you for real? Please tell me that you're joking!

  • @tallpaul521 Inspiration is one thing...but Astaire is in a league all his own...MJ can't touch that. anyone can imitate the thriller, or the Moonwalk...show me someone that says they can copy Astaire, and i will show you a liar.

  • @Soundwave3591 R u serious? Don't try to shit on MJ's talent and abilities. No one can imitate thriller. Like Quincy Jones once said if someone says they can do anything like thriller their lying because it's not something you can create. As for the moonwalk goes no one can do it like MJ did. Sure some people can do it and have tried to do it, but it has never came close to how MJ did it. As they always say always imitated never duplicated.

  • @gagamichaeljackson exactly. MJ IMITATED the Moonwalk: he wasn't the first to dance like that. and no one can beat fred astaire. i haven't seen MJ dance on the ceiling.

  • @Soundwave3591 MJ might've imitated the moonwalk, but he perfected it and took it to another level. I haven't seen fred astaire do the anti-gravity lean. But like I'm going to keep saying I don't hate off of other people's talent. Fred Astaire is a hell of a dancer and MJ is a hell of a dancer too. Fred Astaire even told MJ what a hell of a dancer he was and that meant a lot to MJ. So stop hating.

  • @gagamichaeljackson I'm not "hating" i never said that. i just think Astire is a better dancer. i never said MJ was bad.

  • @DeadPederastXXIX The world would be a better place if u died

  • @DeadPederastXXIX WHY DON'T YOU GO SOMEWHERE!!!

  • @Soundwave3591 Don't be a dork, Fred Astaire didn't dance on ceilings either, though he faked it well ;) Fred Astaire is the king of tap. MJ took dance to a whole new level, incorporating tap, jazz, street moves. Look up his early tap videos. But yes, no one compares to Fred Astaire's tapping skills. It's common knowledge that the Moonwalk was not original. Did someone on here actually say MJ created it??

  • @Soundwave3591 LOL! You actually believe Fred Astaire really danced on the ceiling? Wow! :)))

As for MJ not inventing Moonwalk. Noone said he did. Just like Fred Astaire didn't invent tap dancing.

  • @jacksonaktak look, i KNOW it was a rotating set, but everyoen rememebrs him dancing "on the ceiling"

  • @Soundwave3591 Many dancers can imitate Fred Astaire as well. Though fans of Fred might say noone does it with the elegance Fred did. It's true to MJ's dances as well. Many can imitate the moonwalk and everything he did, but noone does it with the same ease and elegance as he did. Just watch him in a video or on stage with professional, trained dancers! Michael always stands out even though those dancers around him were trained, while he never was.

  • Un mot : MAGNIFIQUE

  • "study the greats and become greater" michael jackson

    R.I.P

  • GREAT GREAT VIDEO , THANK YOU

Michael sempre o melhor =D

  • Fantastic Video ! MJ had always his role models ,but he created his own dances !

  • Quite marvellous. Only flaw: lacks credits for the composers of the Band Wagon song material + the director of The Band Wagon. Not un-important factors.

  • Fantastic!!!! I just loved it... Great Job!

  • Great job.

  • pretty interesting video should share this with my american popular music professor! wish there was more to it!

  • This was friggin' AWESOME! Well done!

  • Good stuff, wish it was longer. I was starting to really get into it

  • WELL AFTER U SAW THE VIDEO U CAN SAY MJ WAS BAD MJ WAS

    DANGEROUSSSSS

  • MICHAEL WAS BETTER OFCOURS LOLOL

  • EPIC - I So Enjoyed This --

    thatsomethingman

  • My Intro to Film instructor used this video as an example of how MJ was influenced by Fred Astaire on Wednesday, I cant stop watching it now.

  • Who cares! Is just like saying Mozart Invented music others who does music after Him are just copy Cats

  • No wonder Fred died, he smoked.

    But a true inspiration.

  • I would have loved to see FA and MJ dance together

and the fact that they did know each other makes it even more amazing

  • Brilliant! Just brilliant! I've seen this video again and again. Michael was truly an artist!

Great job with the video too.

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • this is so coool!

  • :O

  • @SuperTSpain3 Thank you!

  • Thanks for putting in the time & producing a quality video! Fantastic "report" that could be used in art class at schools everywhere!

  • @ppmrxky You're welcome! Thank you for the comment!

  • She was BAD...She was DANGEROUS -Fred Astaire....

BAD and DANGEROUS are name of MJs Album Covers!

  • Wow; Amazing! Great job!

Michael Jackson did his homework while Usher and Justin Timberlake never had to study at all; if they are imitating the likes of Michael Jackson! Thats what makes MJ a true artist is that he perfected dance ... and studied and respected others such as Fred Astaire :)

  • @chelxeaty Thank you!

  • Apparently Fred Astaire also admired Michael Jackson, and called him after seeing Michael's live performance of Billy Jean on television.

  • Fred astaire is a legend ,,, come on !!!!

  • great research! it's no secret that mike was influenced by many who went before him. james brown, jackie wilson, sammy davis jr, fred astair, elvis, even dances and moves that were popular on the streets. look at the "the way you make me feel" video....it's obvious that it was inspired by 'west side story'. mike NEVER claimed to originate these concepts. he ALWAYS paid homage to his heroes. Mike was great at perfecting and incorporating all of those different styles into his own style & moves.

  • This is such a neat video! Very awesome! Two iconic pairs of feet to have graced the dance floor.

  • No secret that MJ was inspired by several of the greats before him, such as James Brown, Fred Astaire, and Jackie Wilson. MJ has emmulated some styles of dancing from them all, as well as other forms of their artistry, but he always made it his own! This is what all of the greats do, take some from the best before u, and then make it all your own style. Others after u will do the same, we've all witnessed several acts emmulating MJ over the years, but nowadays they try to carbon copy, not good

  • I could hardly wait for the video to end so I could comment. You are better than I. Michael did what all dancers do, they call it borrowing. And h borrowed the mess out of freds movies. but in a loving and Tributing way. This was great. adding to my favs til youtube takes it down.

  • This was absolutely brilliant how you pieced this together. You put a lot of thought and research into it. I really admire your work. You should be commended. Thanks so much for your efforts. I will subscribe to your channel.

  • Michael Jackson got the moonwalk from "Jeffrey Daniel" it was originally called the "the backslide".

MJ was a big fan of Soul Train in which Jeffrey Daniel had been a back-up dancer. According to Jackson's sister La Toya, Jackson was a fan of Daniel's dancing and sought him out. He soon met, hired and learned from Daniel.

  • Michael Jackson **Moves Like James Brown**

  • MJ loved anyone who was great work which would give him an idea to surpass them. MJ also loved james brown and copied his moves too since he was a child, in fact james brown was mj'ss favorite-hey mj would even copy himself if he knew what he did was a great sucess, such as "ghost" copying "thriller" etc.

MJ wanted to be the greatest that ever existed in the music industry and he was sucessful :)
