Nels warmed up for Richard Shindell in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday night, March 12th. Our first exposure to Nels (without a band) was a very impressive experience. The line from this song sticks with me.
The pithy lyrics which carry not a whit of contrivance but come from authentic participant observation, the orchestration, and Nels' world weary voice are strong blows to the gut, the head, the heart, and the soul. His ballads have a timeless sense to them and are yet quite contemporary - that's some trick.
I'm a recent convert to the artistry, the unmitigated genius of Nels Andrews. I just discovered him a couple of weeks ago watching the depressing documentary American Meth where Central Avenue Romance is part of the soundtrack. That tune, Jesse's Mom, and Denim Scarecrow have been in excessively high rotation for my personal playlist and I've been driving my friends nuts with my raving, "Have you heard this guy - he's amazing."
Thanks so much for posting this beautifully crafted video with the attendant exceptional audio work. Have to say I like this version of the song compared to the studio version.
