he did that 5/8 thing at 1:30 at some other clinics. all that stuff is really just a matter of practice and getting a motor going without having to think about it. it's extremely hard to get into that mindset though. what a hero
Yeah its a shame he and Greg had a massive falling out, chris' work with Dillinger was mind blowing. But I guess now he's happy with Coheed and Cambria =/
I'm really not so sure he's happy being IN Coheed and Cambria. I think he just enjoys the higher income.
Regardless of the falling out he had with Ben and Greg in Dillinger, I don't think any drummer of his level would be comfortable in a band like Coheed and Cambria. He could've joined any band he wanted. But instead, he took one considerably more mainstream. And why? Well why would anyone leave technical hardcore for boring progressive/alternative.
@1bluecrayon If he isn't happy in Coheed, why would he get Coheed tattoos all over his arms. He obviously has gotten into the story of Coheed and Cambria and into the music.
My would he permanently mark his body if he didn't like it?
@georgeisking Meh Coheed does some cool prog odd time sig stuff, plus his solo at their shows is sick, I see Pennie rocking faces on their next album now that he's acclimated.

decent little buzz roll at the end, but much of it was mindless banging & crashing (my 3 year old could do much of it with a little more arm reach.) Signed, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Louie Bellson, Gene Krupa, Carl Palmer, Steve Smith, Jojo Mayer, Stewart Copeland, John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Marco Minnemann....ya know, guys with talent, technique and skill for the "art" of drumming
ya i hear ya. where the groooove the fat pocket and limb indapendance... like really... its like the guy just wants to go as fast as he can. dont get me wrong, fast playing is sweet. jojo mayer is fast as hell, but at least when jojo plays fast he still has a great pocket and steady metter. i donno i heard a couple cool beats in there. but ya MOST of it was kinda random fills and speed.
are you stupid? take a look at all the drummers you just listed, yes, they have their place in the drumming community as their own style. how can you say chris pennie has no talent? have you even watched this video? lets see you post a video, playing on a tour sponsored by sabian, doing 1/8th of the things chris is doing in this video, or chris does PERIOD. i dare your 3 year old to do some "mindless banging and crashing" that makes this look bad. chris HAS talent, technique skill. youre blind.
look in the mirror, you'll find "stupid" to ans your question. check out some of the drummers (vids) I named and you'll treat yourself to the greatest drumming ever performed over the past 50 years through to the present time. most music critics as well as the general listening audience agree on that. point being: they're not all stupid!
what are we? in grade 3? good one pal. i know EVERY drummer you list, i have steve smiths videos, jojo mayers secret weapons, weckls, thomas langs, minnemmans, steve jordans..im educated in all of those guys arsenals, so i DO know what you are talking about, yes, they are all extremely talented, the best. however, when it comes to comparing styles, this goes nowhere because they are all different from one another.chris pennie is good at what he does, period.if you cant see that, you are ignorant.
Lighten up! on further review of your idiotic remarks, and in consultation with the editorial board at Drummersworld, this banging & crashing vid doesn't sound nearly as bad as scraping your dog-shit-opinions off the bottom of my shoes.
youre the type of drummer no one wants to converse with because you are too stubborn to appreciate talent when clearly its evident. the dog shit opinions on the bottom of your shoes represent my opinions towards yourself, and in further detail, explaining how you are clearly an idiot towards this video. go watch your favourite drummers and stay away from the "banging and crashing" drummers you clearly despise so much, and in that case, wasting your precious time and arguing with me instead.
lol mcpantywaste29. I stand by JoJo Mayer, Buddy Rich (all time greatest), Dennis Coleman, Steve Smith, Marco Minnemann, Billy Cobham, et al. You, stick with those you like. I don't "despise" anyone, contrary to your delusions. Again, "lighten up," take 2 aspirin, and converse with your therapist in the morning about your problems.
Chris pennie is a destructive drummer... Attempt to play some of his genius 4-3-4-7-4-3-4-11 patterns and find yourself emersed in some of the most amazing style your ears have ever followed. My favorite drummer and he compares quite well to Mayer and Rich, hands down.
