The prison conditions shown here are not much different than the middle & high school conditions that existed up to 1983. In fact,Japan's law system is,aside from execution of multiple murderers, extremly lax and lenient. Nearby Korea has more than 60 offences with maximum death penalty(faking money, owning military weapon, breach of military supply contract in wartime etc ) and very strong sex laws modeled after US and Shariah laws. Japan is too lenient.
No, there are many other offences eligible for maximum death penalty outside murder and treason. Faking money ,intentional destruction of aircraft, taking leadership of criminal organisation, very aggravated rape(executions carried out twice in the past),selling drugs to minors, possession of military weapon/ammunition, wartime breach of military supply contract etc.
I'm surprised, for an industrialized first world democracy, I would have expected a higher regard for human rights, I would've expected something like this from China, not Japan.
The jails are similar to the high schools up to 1983 here. Japan's laws are in fact too lenient. Nearby Korea has the strongest sex laws in the industrialised world and over 60 offences eligible for maximum death penalty. Even taking leadership of an organisation like Yakuza can result in death penalty in Korea which also has ,unlike Japan, very strong sex laws modeled after US and Islamic laws.
In response to this video, I say that someone - who is arrested - should probably keep with him/her some sort of secret recording device (either an audio recorder, or a camera) to record what really happens.
Maybe, that will convince lawmakers in Japan to really reform their Legal system.
I spent a year in a japanese prison. It was cool good food , my own room , brand new shower complex for foriegners.excellent library.Guards very fair.Fuchu prison Tokyo
@wteo340 Yes you could not move in your room after hours and weekends, one had to sit on a square cushion back to wall no movement . Excellent for meditation and very good reading. At one stage I was reading three 1000 page plus books a week.Three meals a day, a new foreiner accomodation block and new shower block( two showers a week in winter , three in summer. What a great movie hey !!
@1111MANA That's interesting. I thought the restrictions of movements in the cells was bizarre but the point you made about meditation and reading puts it in some perspective. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
so biased! SMH @ you people complaining about these factories. Are you kidding me? What about in the US prisons? Chain gangs, license plate making, etc.
@SatoshiBatista I am just curios, cause I am not from the states,is that true?About gang rapes? How do you know this,Iv read about the subject, but that was from the seventies, gross shit.
Korea has adopted major aspects of US laws and is expected to switch from the previous continental to British law system. Korea has several times longer sentences for various offences and several dozen of them have maximum death penalty, some of them even without murder(being leader of a criminal organization, treason etc). Korea has recently copied US sex laws which are the strongest in the world. But Japan's law system is extremely lenient compared to this.
Many crimes are covered up in Japan, especially rapes and organised crimes. Yakuza does gunfight in streets with Tokarevs and police does nothing; in Korea, the entire area used by such criminals would be leveled by the military if such a thing would happen. Rapes are almost never reported, victims harshly treated and penalites ridiculously low(Korea has adopted US sex crime laws). Yakuza extorts people without risk of getting ever caught.
While Japan has a harsh prison system which resembles our middle school times, it is also true that japan has unbelievably lenient laws about crime if compared with Korea or USA. Especially in terms of organized crime and sex offences. In Korea, death penalty is possible for rape alone(actual executions happened twice so far), treason, leading a criminal organisation, possession of a weapon taken from the military etc.
Apparently so Lawrence, unfortunately it's not working. We have in Scotland a Government that has not got a clue how to deal with knife crime, shootings, drunkeness, drug taking, and teenage motherhood. Their response to underage sex and motherhood for example is to teach children more and more about sex and how to do it without getting pregnant at a earlier and earlier age. By all accounts in another of yesterdays papers our five year olds are to taught about oral sex, God help us.
The newspaper article goes on to say that given all this luxury there is still on average an attack by prisoners on jail staff every week. And last January the inmates smashed and trashed an entire prison wing putting two prison officers in hospital. Brigadier Hugh Monro, Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland, described Addiewells cells as "spacious and bright" and hailed the prisons gym facilities as "first class". There's more, but you get the idea.
It looks pretty simple really, if in Japan don't end up in Prison there. my advice to all Japanese criminals come to Scotland and commit crimes, the Prisons here are virtual holiday camps especially Castle Huntly, prisoners have individual cells complete with TV and video games, as a prison it's a joke.
I kid you not Lawrence. In today's Daily Mail for example, there is an article whose headline reads, "Now prisons start paying criminals not to take drugs". I won't type it all out, but it goes on to say, "prisoners can expect to be earning bonuses if they stay out of trouble and turn up for education classes for only three months". This is in a prison called Addiewell in West Lothian, whose inmates can enjoy en-suite showers, state of the art TV's and keys to their own cells.
Tokyo PD precincts use "beat and release" tactics. As a former cop, I say this is awesome in that you get the message across and keep petty crime low and you don't spend half a shift and get carpal tunnel filling out reports on a bust over a baggy of weed
@GothicWiccan13 Man, if a women kicked me in the nuts (which has happened) i never go and tell the cops..... that stupid.... its hurts as hell, but its not worth talking..... and getting kicked in the nuts is far worse than getting touched in the private parts..... If some gay creep touched me in the nuts, i would get annoyed (just like when ladies get touched in their part) and tell that fuck to stop it, but i wouldn't tell the cops.... but if the went further, well i would.
@GothicWiccan13 If they stick dick in vagina and whatever..... i understand..... but if is just for minor touching, that shouldn't be a problem...... for both sides......

Japan reactivated its old jury system, one year after Korea. Korea has adjusted many things according to US standards, especially US-style sex laws which are the strongest outside Shariah jurisdictions. But Jaoan always goes it sown way.
@malacca87 Absolutely agree, and what this documentary conveniently neglect to report, that japan is among countries with the lowest crime rate, lowest prison cost to taxpayers, and least government corruption. Most people in Japan have a sense of consciousness, dignity and responsibility for their actions which is very rare to see in the rest of the world.
@malacca87 of course its biased...there isnt a single conscious action a human being can take which is NOT biased...but you have to ask yourself not whether something is biased (because all human creations including documentaries are all biased) but you have to rather ask is it relevant, true, etc. I find it curious that you just go around crying and screaming about bias instead of listing exact examples and provide relevant evidence in which the documentary is wrong
@malacca87 Not really. There's nothing good to say about the Japanese justice system. It's one of the worst things--if not the the very worst thing--about an otherwise very nice country.
Tons of human rights organizations have criticized the Japanese justice system, and academic articles about it have also been highly critical.
The broad powers of detention and interrogation, the beatings of prisoners, and the trial without a jury I can't agree with.
I think if we had that kind of strict regimentation in our prisons, though, we'd have a lot fewer criminals committing crimes once they got out. Five years of drilling, chanting, and not speaking unless spoken to would be better than twenty years of socializing freely, and more humane in the long run.
To all those bitching about the lack of subtitles I have a solution: Learn Japanese. Sure you'll be branded a Weeaboo, but you'll understand the video better.
@Mongler37 Get stuffed - the English-language market is the market that this was designed for, this youtube release is to get us to buy the finished product.
Although Japan has a strong justice system, Japan is very lenient against sex crimes. Most get unreported and there are few CCTV cameras.Especially in comparison with Korea which now has US-style laws which are the strongest outside the Islamic world.
@xxwzaebd if is for something minor (eg touching)..... japanese women reacted quite firmly in meaning that women will give that guy a stare or an slap and that the end of things, in comparison to western women in which they would tell the cops on the spot.. and many guys in the western culture get some jail time because they accidentally touch a women
On the other hand, neighboring Korea has one of the stiffest sex-related laws which are adopted from US laws which are the strictest in the First World.
@xxwzaebd@xxwzaebd they copied from the us, which i find to be stupid.... i reckon western counties has the most stupid sex laws..... major crimes should be charged for, but however, just touching and small bits and pieces shouldn't go to the cops, and the ladies should stand up for them self rather than to tell the cops
It angers me how liberals are more concerned about the “rights” of criminals here in America making them into victims, while ignoring rights of actual victims. There is probably a reason why they have one of the lowest crime rates in the world!!! MAYBE WE COULD LEARN SOMETHING FROM THEM!!! LIBERAL HYPOCRITE!!!
Well, the only part I forget that was left out would be the fact Japan is a racist bigot mofo'ing country. Though their methods of control the prison population is good but the way they acquire prisoners is bad. I'm PR/JP/SP and dark. When I was living in that "Kill the niggers" hell hole I can tell you they have the same system implemented for white folks also. Only place in the world LOL that flings shit at ppl equally.
Japanese police hahahah they make me laugh... I couldn't imagine being caught by the Japo Popo hahaha sooo funny what the heck he screamed like a monkey in 2:47 hahah
fucking Western hypocrites with deranged thinking their justice system is better than Japan's when theirs is a big joke. they think not of the victims of the criminals. the victims have no voice. i spit on the film producers and narrator. fucking idiots!
THEY ARE PRISONERS!!! obviously they committed crimes against the people.... liberal idiots always forget that. If you think they are being treated unfairly.... try going & telling that to the inmates victims.
u murder someone they should just kill u u murder 10 ppl or so shoot u in the knee and wait 1 minute then shoot u in the shoulder the more pain and then kill u u rob something depends the valua cut ure finger r arm of and ure free to go that would lower the crime rate
@volodymyrm1 I agree totally. Everyone is so worried about personal rights for people in prison here yet there is no room in the prisons. Where I live the prisons are so full they have to ship them to different states. I say run the prison like these in Japan and it will cut down on the repeat offenders . Also, what is the death sentance for if you just sit forever? Get it done and buckle down !! Clean things up for once.
Describing the imperfectness of the Japanese justice system as "third world approach" is as absurd as linking Obama to Hitler cuz of his policies. I mentioned tons of brazilians jailed for homicide in Japan. If it were in Brazil, pretty much half of them wouldn't last a week behind bars before being "suicided." That's how they go with rapists, women and child murderers: the jailers tell the other inmates "hey you can do whatever you like with this guy." That's the real "third world approach."
"Third world" approach... Man you know nothing about third world justice. I'm from a third world country, Brazil, and I've been living over a decade already in Japan. In Brazil, more than 5000 are killed by the cops for "resisting arrest with gun possession." No need to add often these are just summary executions. Now, I can count at least 40 murder cases committed by brazilians in Japan (some of them multiple) and no one (I repeat, NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM) was sentenced to death.
@kalapariplayer would there really be a need? People seem to dedicate their lives to critizing the States, its the number one country to hate so why even bother????
If the crime is serious.. I have no problem with 8-person cells etc. Harsh is fine... actually should be the rule. Errors in judgment is the only thing we don't want, but if the prisoner is guilty of a serious offense..... I have no compassion what so ever.
Rather, the western prison system (especially in Europe) is far far far too soft.
I have no problem with the conditions in these jails,I mean if you commit a crime you shouldn't be pampered in prison, also the death penalty is dreadful-the procedure at least, and the process beforehand enables corruption and intimidation.
I would have liked to hear what the people were actually saying,I could only understand few of the speakers, and not even them completely.
blah blah blah their country , and its their to run . people should just shut the fuck up , just because they do something different doesnt mean its wrong .
Yeah I had read about Japanese law system, and it absolutely has to change, held in jail for 3 weeks without charges is nothing more than psychical attack.
Hey worldtraveler101 you are an idiot. This is doc from an English channel and narrated in English...Therefore absolutely should have subtitles. The argument that because its about Japan and filmed in Japan so doesn't need subs for the English speaking audience is just retarded.
What's with people complaining there is too much Japanese in this video? uh HELLO... THIS IS JAPAN! DUH! Do you think youtube is only for speakers of the english language?
For some comparison, watch "Lockup" on MSNBC to see U.S. prisons. Crazy, out of control, prison officers being stabbed, screaming inmates covered with tattoos getting a chance to see the Parole Board every year (and more often than not, getting out on parole since the U.S. no longer has the money to accomodate all its criminals giving them better health care and food than some people on the outside) - - more power to the Japanese and their prison system...
JPics: could you at least give us a sound bite at the beginning explaining why there is so much Japanese spoken with no translations in this video, thank you and good day.
ok....out of all the video's JMP that doesn't have subtitles, this is the worse. I would like to feel their pain....if i could understand. Very good story. sux's :(
oh come on , wester judicial system is not great either . Having jury is just retarded . Just because they have different way of it doing things doesn't mean its savagely evil , and hey their crime rate is low . So that got to mean something .
You got to love how damned bleeding heart wester system so fucken sympathetic to criminals while not giving shit about victims .
maybe the harsh prisons are part of the reason why the crime rate is so low?
stops repeat offenders.
if things were easy on the inside then people in japan probably wouldnt give a damm about going to prison.
we british sent our prisoners to australia in the past, probably part of the reason why we have higher crime rates now (the last bit is a joke, before people take it too seriously)
I doubt their victims got any advanced warning! People tend to say anything to stop torture, though. And police hiding evidence is just plain corrupt.
I'm sorry but I don't speak Japanese, where are the English dubs/ subs?

@malacca87 not to mention, the japanese people talk for couple minutes, and we get 1 sentence translation..wtf.
dendara100 10 months ago 2
@malacca87 of course its biased...there isnt a single conscious action a human being can take which is NOT biased...but you have to ask yourself not whether something is biased (because all human creations including documentaries are all biased) but you have to rather ask is it relevant, true, etc. I find it curious that you just go around crying and screaming about bias instead of listing exact examples and provide relevant evidence in which the documentary is wrong
slovakmath 9 months ago
@malacca87 Why?
Sophie0257 6 months ago
@malacca87 call me idiotic..but please explain why its biased
brokencoda1 5 months ago
@malacca87 Not really. There's nothing good to say about the Japanese justice system. It's one of the worst things--if not the the very worst thing--about an otherwise very nice country.
Tons of human rights organizations have criticized the Japanese justice system, and academic articles about it have also been highly critical.
Tzadeck 4 months ago
The broad powers of detention and interrogation, the beatings of prisoners, and the trial without a jury I can't agree with.
I think if we had that kind of strict regimentation in our prisons, though, we'd have a lot fewer criminals committing crimes once they got out. Five years of drilling, chanting, and not speaking unless spoken to would be better than twenty years of socializing freely, and more humane in the long run.
Threetails 1 year ago
Japan has a jury system since the '20s which halted due to draft in WW2. But it was revived 1 year after Korea enacted its jury system.

Although Japan has a strong justice system, Japan is very lenient against sex crimes. Most get unreported and there are few CCTV cameras.Especially in comparison with Korea which now has US-style laws which are the strongest outside the Islamic world.
xxwzaebd 1 year ago
@xxwzaebd if is for something minor (eg touching)..... japanese women reacted quite firmly in meaning that women will give that guy a stare or an slap and that the end of things, in comparison to western women in which they would tell the cops on the spot.. and many guys in the western culture get some jail time because they accidentally touch a women
PyrimidKingJindai 1 year ago
On the other hand, neighboring Korea has one of the stiffest sex-related laws which are adopted from US laws which are the strictest in the First World.

@xxwzaebd @xxwzaebd they copied from the us, which i find to be stupid.... i reckon western counties has the most stupid sex laws..... major crimes should be charged for, but however, just touching and small bits and pieces shouldn't go to the cops, and the ladies should stand up for them self rather than to tell the cops
PyrimidKingJindai 1 year ago
@xxwzaebd but for major crime (eg rape) thats a different story

Only place in the world LOL that flings shit at ppl equally.

volodymyrm1 1 year ago

CUMBICA1970 1 year ago
"Third world" approach... Man you know nothing about third world justice. I'm from a third world country, Brazil, and I've been living over a decade already in Japan. In Brazil, more than 5000 are killed by the cops for "resisting arrest with gun possession." No need to add often these are just summary executions. Now, I can count at least 40 murder cases committed by brazilians in Japan (some of them multiple) and no one (I repeat, NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM) was sentenced to death.

For some comparison, watch "Lockup" on MSNBC to see U.S. prisons. Crazy, out of control, prison officers being stabbed, screaming inmates covered with tattoos getting a chance to see the Parole Board every year (and more often than not, getting out on parole since the U.S. no longer has the money to accomodate all its criminals giving them better health care and food than some people on the outside) - - more power to the Japanese and their prison system...

oh come on , wester judicial system is not great either . Having jury is just retarded . Just because they have different way of it doing things doesn't mean its savagely evil , and hey their crime rate is low . So that got to mean something .
You got to love how damned bleeding heart wester system so fucken sympathetic to criminals while not giving shit about victims .
sewagedweller 1 year ago
maybe the harsh prisons are part of the reason why the crime rate is so low?
stops repeat offenders.
if things were easy on the inside then people in japan probably wouldnt give a damm about going to prison.
we british sent our prisoners to australia in the past, probably part of the reason why we have higher crime rates now (the last bit is a joke, before people take it too seriously)
