i've seen both versions and they're both good in their own settings, original had the tension, the story the symbolic side to it being a cult classic, however i think sean beans part in the remake tops that of the original. He has a creepy edge to him a sort of silent madness that only sean bean manages to create.

It depends what you like, you can't really say oh this one is better because it's opinion.

I just saw this one on the TV and it seems a pretty decent thriller. It does not convinced me the fact that the good guy is ripped in a half but there is tension in the movie, which is what you expect from a thriller.
