  • banging a squid never crossed my mind when hearing this song until now

  • Afterthought, the end is fitting I think. For me it shows that our decision may ripple, causing unintended consequence.

  • As for those who think the bestiality is weird, I think you take this too literally. Maybe he chose the squid to portray something beautiful that can't be trusted. The perils of foolish lust! A man and a squid could never work, that's the point I believe.

  • the film's end is disgusting, and produces me a really horrible sensacion!!! those hybridsss, but the music is beautiful

  • I'm all for moderation but sometimes it seem, that moderation itself is a form of extreme.

  • ilove this song

  • He didn't drown, it looked like the squid impaled him at 6:00.

  • So... did he bang that squid?

  • look up this song on daytrotter and it has the instrumental!!!

  • this video is oh so sad.

  • Andrew Bird is a genius.

  • I'm Old Greg!

  • @amilisom I got a MANGINA!

  • @amilisom Ever drink Bailey's from a shoe?

  • Gibsonway.. exactly.. tragic love story eh

  • Gibsonway.. exactly.. tragic love story eh

  • overall i actually think that this is a really beautiful video. it's an interesting concept and it was well executed. the only strange part is the ending. it is rather disturbing actually. but really if you just ignore the ending part it reminds me of the beatles' song octopus's garden. it's am interesting spin on the phrases "there are plenty more fish in the sea" and "i love you to death."

  • Beautiful intro, love this song plus the video even though it is a little disturbing

  • ah, beastiality, gotta love it.

  • wow

  • Cool video/song. Daytrotter rules so much too.

  • I listen to this song on repeat for hours while I do my college work =)

  • @Duja1014

That's how I've been doing all my studying for midterms for the past ten days : ) Spot on

  • Reminescent of Wallace Stevens in my opinion, if the squid= the man's lucid imagination set free.

  • I love this more than you could possibly imagine.

  • gross...the squid had weird babies with the guy

  • i'm all for moderation but sometimes it seems moderation itself it a kind of exteme

  • @theshruggingofatlas Hence the allowance of excess in moderation. :]

  • fucking squids

  • The most beautiful song in the whole wide world. It just is.

  • good health and love of life, hug your youngins everyday

  • Amazing piece of music and animation. Never trust a squid though.

  • Uh, no. Oh god no, this is too weird.

I love AB to death, and this doesn't serve

him justice. A mermaid, sure fine, but

bestiality is where I draw the line. :c

  • I heard someplace that there is actually such thing as tentacle porn in Japan. I'm sorry, this is just too creepy. Love AB and his music, but I'm not ready for man-squid love.

  • no! giant squid of LOVE!

  • giant squid of anger?

  • His show in Minneapolis First Avenue on thursday was incredible! Love it!

  • wonder if I can find this guy on Itunes...

  • @ridgeruna yea hes on itunes.. this guy isn't that un known haha he's pretty popular

  • this song is comforting for me, a melancholy sort of comfort. perhaps this is ironic for a song that's describing a lull...

  • @AnnaRose5225 for me atleast a lull in life has always had an unsatisfied melancholy feel, i much prefer to be striving towards something out of my own comfort ^__^

  • The 6 people who didn't like this probably think this video is about beastiality.

  • The 6 people who didn't like this probably think this video is about beastiality...it's about love!

  • this is rich in beauty

  • @4caster1 Umm dude I think spooninspoon was referring to the number of people who have "disliked" this video. Aka he likes this video. Just sayin'

  • 6 thumbs down ? get a clue and a good taste for music and art

  • Comment removed

  • @4caster1 what the hell are you talking about? I love the video and song ... an u have no idea why my youtube handle is spooninspoon... So stop talking about what u think u know and get a clue. Idiot

  • I think the squid is a metaphor and so is the man for that matter. It basically shows what happens in a relationship when one person is selfish and focuses mostly on their needs not taking into account both persons needs. This could be a corollary for any of those really clingy relationships. Independence is usually smothered in too many relationships.

  • i wonder how this was animated its great

  • Amazing!!!!!!!

  • I'm at peace.

  • Hey Andrew Bird, I might be lame but I'm still going to relate to this song. Asshole.

    :)

  • This is a beautiful song. A beautiful video. Why do people always need to analyze and understand everything they see? Just let the beauty be. Appreciate. Keep living life. :)

  • @Reublucian321 So true. Natural pleasure and enjoyment gets compromised when others dig in too deeply.

  • which album is this in?

  • @ryuu304 Weather Systems have the original one, the daytrotter version, I do not know.

  • most definitely the most bizarre music video in history.

    that being said, phenomenal song.

  • @jaydoubleyouess agreed... bizarre is an understatement!

  • I thought this video (literal sense) was about a man who finds a squid and falls in love. The squid feels the same way but upon his visit he remembers his wife and doesn't want the squid to touch him because he is conflicted. Which makes the squid upsets so he tries to give the squid a peace offering, (a lobster) which pisses off the squid. He goes back to his wife and packs up his things and leaves. Him and the squid are happy but one day the squid accidentally kills him... I think.

  • Beautiful!

  • And that kids, is why you don't play with squids.

  • thank you 4 this video!!!!

  • Andrew Bird is a musical genius.

  • the part with the squid leg behind him with the fish is reallt cool

  • Very melancholy song that goes extremely well with the animation. Wonderful!

  • i am in love with this video!!

  • la animación está demasiado buena.. Y la canción.. uffffff.. :D

    finísima.

  • The Weathersystems version is wonderful too...I love this song in any form.

  • yes, his voice is very reminiscent of Jeff Buckley - so ethereal. What a song.

  • Wow. And to think I wouldn't have heard this had I not been watching a mental patient named Andrew talk about his life on YT.

For a second I thought he was a relation to Jeff Buckley with that voice. Absolutely amazing.

  • who cares why are these people so angry this music is so calming i love it.

  • glorious.

  • I forgive you, celina.

  • pure

  • yes.

  • Why do humans always ends up messing up something so beautiful with their rubbish?

Who cares whether you won or lost and if you really know andrew bird to hell with that

Realize that things have in common rather than what not

    Disfruten de esta bella canción!!

  • Comment removed

  • "Why do humans", what are you? Some sort of higher being?

  • @MoinsterB yah just listen to the music :) love this song...

  • Comment removed

  • "Ohh I'mmm, I'm in love", LOVE THIS SONG!!!! <3

  • rah, j'ADORE!!!!!!! ça me fait un ti peu penser à John Mayall ce moreceau.

  • Beautiful.

  • Yes, Beastiality is always beautiful isn't it?

  • Hardly...

  • I LOVE THIS MUSIC VIDEO!!

but I LOVE THE SONG EVEN MORE!!!

  • kinda creepy but its an AWESOME song!!! =3

  • this is pure musical genius.

  • I actually really wish I had the instrumental from the beginning of the video. Of course the song itself is beautiful, but the instrumental makes me want to cry...

  • @dreDREb13 The instrumental is part of the song, not distinct from it. If you like this sort of music, you might like a collaborative CD by Yo-Yo Ma and Ennio Morricone (forget the name right now). Everyone knows Yo-Yo, Ennio is a long-standing composer of music for the film industry (in my youth I fell in love with his music for Cat People). The intro to this piece of music is very similar to Ennio's music for a film called 'The Mission' - check it out!

  • Does anyone know if the instrumental portion is a separate song?

  • @geminiflux0 I don't think so. You can download the entire song (intro included) free from the Daytrotter site, though.

  • @geminiflux0

you can download this from Daytrotter. That's where I discovered Andrew Bird.

Then, on iTunes, just copy the song so that you have two. Then right click one of them, click "get info," click "options," then change the end time to 1:48 or wherever you want it to end. I do that with a lot of my songs.

  • it's a violin or mandolin or cello

  • This song is amazing!

  • i love this!

  • I am so confused by this video. The squid loves the man but then gets too rough playing with him and ends up killing him..?

  • The Man and the Squid fall in love, and eventually, end up running away together. Though they are both happy under the ocean, the squid forgets that the man needs air and forgets to let him up for air and he drowns.

  • @Gibsonway i think the squid kills the man. first time around after they make love the man shuns the squid from touching him and by offering it a lobster but it rejects and he goes down realizing what wrong he did. Goes home and decides to leave his wife and pack up and goes and finds squid again, but squid is different towards him. tosses him around and he lands on the squids spike and murdered. maybe because she it felt used and wanted revenge or got crazy.

  • @anstar31 I love how you try to empathise with the squid

  • @Gibsonway My take on this is that the man and his wife have grown apart, he decides to see what other 'fish' are in the sea, gets hooked by a beautiful squid but is then just as unable to meet the squid's needs/wants as he was unable to meet to meet his human wife's needs. Which then leads me to Bukowski's poem 'The Laughing Heart". Check it out, it'll do you good...

  • I like the song, but the video it is a litle bit disturbing!

  • where can i find this version of lull?

  • Daytrotter. It's a live session.

This is, by the way, exquisite.

  • Don't mind me asking, but what album is this on?

  • Weather Systems

  • i love this song and video.

  • beautiful ;)

  • Andrew Bird performed "Lull" and they showed this animation at the Chicago Millenium Park Free concert.

Great performance, this song is great.

  • This is amazing. To titaniumstarship, music is art, and not everyone likes all art. It is subjective, but you should respect other peoples tastes, and not write it off as inferior. I respect that you like to rock out.

  • I AGREE! LOL

  • Why is that? Because actually going to art school taught me to respect others and different forms of art. What is it that you do for a living? I'm an art critic, and there are many people who would disagree with your statement. Go back to playing video games (halo?), you douche. I'm surprised you manage to come across this video.

  • you sir are a pretentious moron. i could just rip on you and your master (pitchfork) but i however dont care. what i find most peculiar is that you just decided to slam someone by rubbing your credentials in our faces and taking a stab at what you seem to think is his intellectual inferiority. if you had learned anything in school it should be that making an argument doesnt involve criticizing a person who makes a counter argument. that is sheer idiocy

  • Perhaps you should follow the argument below, if you haven't already. Firemanhalo was the one who personally attacked. It wasn't even an argument, really. I was responding to someone who was being close-minded. I certainly don't like all music, but I don't trash it and the people that listen to it. I even acknowledge music that I don't particularly like which is good as being good. You, sir, need to learn how to write. Revisit grammar because you are making yourself look uneducated.

  • to quote yourself "...which is good as being good."

  • wow!

  • ...this song makes me happy to be me and...be me alone. lonely independence are the words

  • i couldn't agree more. i thought i was the only one.

  • yes, such beauty

  • listen to that beautiful violen.

  • im officially freaked out by this video.., but in a good way...

  • i found him on NPR music in the car and just had to look him up, omg its pretty!

  • That's the SAME EXACT THING that happened to my dad!!! Then he came home and told me!! LOL~

I like Andrew already. His music really different from anything I've heard before, and I listen to A LOT of different music. (^_^)

    ~VJ

  • Hey VJ,

If you like Andrew you may also like Jeff Buckley. Check him out. Specifically his cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

    Cheers,

    DS

  • that's how i found this guy too, i think it was this friday, right? pretty cool, right? great respect for real musicians in this age!

  • same here. Thank God for public radio. There needs to be more of it!

  • I'm a heterosexual 18 year old male, and I'd go gay for Andrew Bird. I can't wait to see him next month

  • I have seen this performed live and it is really beautiful. Andrew bird is defiantly one of the best live performers next to iron and wine and TV on the radio

  • I think Andrew Bird is my soul mate.

  • Awesome and beautiful...

Andrew Bird - you have stolen into the reaches of my inner soul... I'm in a lull.

  • the beginning is sad w the lobster

  • this is art

  • andrew bird has such a sexy voice. I love his cds like so much. :P

  • Andrew Bird is sexy in general. ;-)

  • haha ^//^

  • You are an amazing artist!

  • really strange video the song was good but i prefer the original more

  • But I am not one of the stereotypical pretentious indie kids that you have in the back of your mind. I do listen to mainstream music in addition to indie music.

Here one man plays guitar, sings, and whistles. Can you do that? It's beautiful music made by one singular person. Who cares if you're grandma would like it? Just because she likes spaghetti doesn't mean you can't.

Indie is just short for independent. Any act not on a big label is indie. Of Montreal is indie and certainly not wimpy.

  • and the violin

  • just because indie rock is popular now doesn't mean that it wasn't there before or won't be there after the "fad"

  • if people enjoy it, they enjoy it. everything is a fad, and you are coming off extremely pretentious.

  • i happen to know several musicians who play music and travel for no other reason than they love to play music and to see people enjoy it. for them it isn't business or the desire to belong to some "fad".

i do agree with you that there certainly is a mainstream "indie" fad coming about. my last comment was pretty snappy, but understand that your comments sound very self-certain and perhaps pretentious. i just want to clarify that there are several reasons for people to follow musical pursuits.

  • RAWK AWN BRUTHA

  • lol

  • it's just you.

  • Troll much?

  • sorry that my opinion isn't the same everyone elses...I guess that makes me a "troll" and a "hater"...hmmm.

  • Why are you apologizing? If everyone thinks you're a thirty-year-old loser who has nothing better to do than sit in front of your computer and indiscriminately insult the personal tastes of everyone posting to this video, that's not really your fault.

    It's society's fault, right?

  • lol

  • Lisa Barcy RULES!!!

  • cool and beautiful but weird... i mean he had sex with a squid

  • this is so beautiful, first off, I love squids and second off this sounds like something I'd play for a child when it's time for them to sleep and it's so.....oddly romantic.

  • i cry when i listen to this song. the music is so beautiful.

  • I love this song =)

    Such a beautiful rendition, too.

  • Such a talent...met him in LA at an Amoeba Records performance...would love to jump fifteen years back in time, and listen to "One Hundreds Years of Music" from Brown and Reininger...thanks for the visit to the site!

    g

  • He played this with the animation in the background at Millennium Park. I was captivated.

  • i was there too!!!
