  • This instrument is so beautiful.

I'm so jealous of the oboe family :c

  • @thisistides97 but.... this instrument is in the bassoon family? >.>

  • @JasonTongRulz Bassoon and oboe were technically a combined family i thought, Bassoon and Contrabassoon being the bass intruments of the oboe family, but i might be mistaken.

  • @thisistides97 They aren't considered members of the oboe family since they are actually very different, but the double reeds obviously make them alike :)

  • @cranberry133 Yes, they're collectively called the Double Reed family

  • 1:05 muzak for depressed ferrets not in love.

  • It sounds good :D

  • What a range!

  • What a depressing instrument. Sorry

  • @Douken At least take the time to explain why you think so.

  • @Douken The Tuba is more depressing. But when you blend them in, this instrument is like the backbone of some music.

  • Is it just me, or is this guy... giant?

  • Does it have the same fingerings as a regular bassoon?

  • awesome

  • Damn, that's low!!!!!!

  • Incredible. Simply incredible.

Do Contrabassoon fingerings differ from Bassoon fingerings? Just curious.

  • @Lamar933 I've never actually played one but from what I've seen and read, yes.

  • (Me talking to my Bassoon) It's not that I don't love you Bassoon..... its just I found somebody so much better.... THE CONTRABASSOON!

  • if i had one of these.. i would put it in a glass box, and worship it every day. :)

  • I love this musically sensitive and intelligent approach to the instrument. The level of refinement is good to hear. Pardon what I hope is not a dumb questions, but, is this a Mollenhauer or Heckel Contra? The tone is dark and centered while still substantially vibrant. Thanks for such a fine demonstration, more young players should strive for this kind of approach to the Contra.

  • LOL I love the contrabassoon/contrabass clarinet fight goin' on down there! XD

  • I'm an upright bassist who dreams of a contrabassoon. It's just not fair how low the contra gets to plunge.

  • Geez I never knew an instrument like that could go that low!!! :O

  • there is truly nothing more terrifying than a "lonely entry" on contrabassoon. :P Learning to tame the beast is quite the task.

  • Anyone else think this gentleman looks like a long-lost cousin to Bruce Willis?

  • @bludemon07 omg you are so right

  • is he actually principal contrabassoon in a big orchestra or is he just third or fourth bassoon

  • Will the band be able to hear me now?

  • I like jazz music so much more than symphony music. But i still find the videos enjoyable.

  • Contrabassoon is so sexy.

  • this is epic.

  • He must be really tall. My head doesn't even clear the top of the contra when I'm playing it.

  • @Rinatrix Haha! It all has to do with how you adjust the peg at the bottom of the Contra.

  • @MarcoAJuarez Dominic is tall though.

  • very nice demonstration

  • OMG i was like "whoa...thats soooo low!!" :O its pretty cool

  • this guy should be in carnal decay!

  • на брюсса уилиса похож

  • perfect sound

  • we all know contrabass clarinet is better :P

  • @venskus2009 Yeah, that's why all classical composers after the 18th century write for contrabass clarinet. HA!

  • @MercifulMe hey just cause its not as old doesnt mean its not as good lol. contrabass clarinet and contrabassoon live in harmony together(literally lol) bu the contrabass clarinet is better....sometimes lol.

  • @venskus2009 You're obviously some kid who plays a contrabass clarinet in a concert band, probably under grade 11, who thinks that it is a serious instrument that classical musicians actually play.

  • @MercifulMe no accually i dont play contrabass. lol i play regular bass. and sometimes contrabass aaccually. but calm down lol. and yes imma frshman. but im going to carnegie hall so i do have some sense of music and knowledge towards music thank you.

  • @venskus2009 I know people who've played in bands at Carnegie Hall... not that impressive.

  • @MercifulMe not my point. im 14 and playing t carnegie hall. that means that i know what im talking abouut. if youre so smart then re-read my comments. im greeing with you but still siding with what ive said.

  • @venskus2009 No.

  • @venskus2009 The fact that you are playing in Carnegie Hall does not mean you know what you are talking about. However, your lack of appropriate apostrophes, capital letters, and so on proves that you do not know what you all talking about. Have a nice day =].

  • @Mitsu1021 how does my grammar mean i dont know what im talking about? sorry im not a stuck-up bitch. you think im being hypocritical? no im not being stuck-up. im sticking up for myself when people dont understand what sarcasm is. look it up.

  • @venskus2009 I was just kidding bud =]. No harm done I hope. However, I will note that using correct grammar does not make someone stuck-up. =P

  • @venskus2009 The standards that are held for high school students such as yourself are very much lower than those held for professionals or even college students for that matter. Let me point out that you were not the sole reason for your band to be invited to play in Carnegie Hall.

  • @MarcoAJuarez stop treating me like im 6. no shit the standards are lower for high school students. however you assumed it was my high school band. youre wrong. it was a clarinet choir. no shit i wasnt the sole reason we went to carnegie. hall. thats not what i said. again, you were assuming. but my point is, if i sucked the group wouldve and we wouldnt have made it. same goes for anyone else in the group. if a higschool group goes to carnegie hall, let me know. please, hop off my dick.

  • @MercifulMe Shut the fuck up you conceded clarinet player.

  • @vacuumlover1 I don't play clarinet.

  • @venskus2009 You just had to be the idiot, that makes every BBb Contrabass Clarinet player, look like a fucking moron. You realize Contrabass Clarinet literature is so hard to come by, and the Contrabassoon is a lot more agile than the Clarinet is? Contrabassoon sounds better at it's lower, and upper register than the BBb contrabass does. I am a trained Bass/Contrabass Clarinet player, and personally I would rather have a contrabasson, than a contrabass clarinet any day,

  • @Intelligentia100 for Gods sake, it all started off with me being sarcastic. but noooo. i just had to get my dick bitten off 5 times. no shit the contrabassoon is better. the cantrabass clarinet is shit. it needs much further design. please chil your balls. i dont know why you are being so moody. theres no literature for it because it sucks and is useless. yes i know im going a bit far but im making a point. perhaps you(mr.perfect) dont understand it.

  • @venskus2009 I know that, I said that the Contrabassoon was better. Reading is hard I heard.

  • are contrabassoon reeds and bocals different from bassoons?

  • @cranberry133 very hahah

  • @cranberry133 yes, both the reed and the bocal are much larger than a bassoon

  • I'm playing the Cor Anglais in this piece at the moment and the guy playing the contrabassoon in this is surprisingly similar to this.

  • @lennic95 Sorry similar to the guy playing in my conservatoire ^^

  • is the mother goose suite really the most important excerpt for the instrument? i should think that the solo in the concerto for the left hand is more significant.

  • @dctomm Yes, Mother Goose is literally on every audition. Left hand is on most auditions.

  • @dctomm Yes. The Mother Goose Suite is on every audition I've had or read of so far. It is so most likely because it demonstrates your phrasing capacities and especially with breathing.

  • OMG it goes sooooooooooo deep, it made me laugh the first time he played... I love this =)

  • oh damn! i want that in the high school!!!! i'll play it!!

  • @PurpleOfTheRose Really expensive!

  • SI LO HAS LEIDO Y PEGA ESTO EN 5 VIDEOS MAS SI NO L OHACES TU MADRE MORIRA EN 3 DIAS POR FAVOR HACEDME CASO ES UNA MALDICION

  • A Contraba de what?

  • When fingering the E flat...which can sound rather flat.... :D

  • Anyone know if the Bach movement they give a PDF for is in a different key than the original, up a 5th. Is that right because that makes the range absurdly high.

  • You play it so beautifully. When the kid in my school band plays it, it just sounds like a loud elephant fart.

  • @BurningMeUpInside LMAO!!!

  • @BurningMeUpInside

Your school has a contrabassoon? o_O

  • @BurningMeUpInside your school has a contrabassoon?

  • Wow, i wonder if someone can put that up their ass

  • @NinjaCOOKIEZZ74 u be surprised

  • @NinjaCOOKIEZZ74 Damn you're hilarious dude you must get some fine women.

  • @NinjaCOOKIEZZ74 you can

  • @NinjaCOOKIEZZ74 Watch One guy One contrabassoon.

  • WoW... that guys got wood!

  • Ugh, I want to play a contrabassoon so badly.... I'm a bassoonist, but it's just not enough sexiness for me.

  • @jowil93 Play some Holst. He seems to have a fetish for sexy instruments... Got an alto flute in there, and great double reed section including contra, english horn and bass oboe... WOOHOO

  • @jowil93 bass clarinet bass clarinet bass clarinet. hahahahah

  • @venskus2009 I've played Bass Clarinet. Its nothing too special. Playing Bassoon right now.

  • Comment removed

  • That's very special and very low , that instrument Perhaps you like to play what I inserted in my audition with Youtube Symphony 2011, Parts : 1/5 and 5/5 ( on ANKHATON, you see them immediately) . . . in the 5/5 , I had some riffs like Marcus Miller BASS Guitar I'm so curious if you like it It could very well be played by You Sir Please tell me Also if you find it no good at all Thanks See also my OBAMA BLUES (- if you like Jazz )
  • beautiful

  • @TheDeadlyDNA

    I agree!

  • This guy did all the wrong excerpts. He was supposed to have done Beethoven 5 and the FIRST movement of Brahms 3, not the last. Though the ones he did will probably help, nobody will be auditioning with them.

  • @ThaSchwab Perhaps in your opinion, the pieces you suggested should be what he demonstrated. His excerpts are more common and perhaps, see it this way, he was hinting that playing these excerpts well will aid you in making the orchestra.

  • Very nice video, useful things. But why isn't the masterclass about the actual audition repertoire?

  • HELL YA...playing bassoon for seven years ad i had the privilege of playing on Fox's secret 5 hole contra haha...love it! ive been waiting for bassoon/contra masterclass for a few weeks...and i was not disappointed!
