So this seemed liked a good way to make extra money on the side, since I'm a full-time student. I figured that without the cost of gas or commute time, it would even out just a bit. I worked for 5 hours and did some math. I had made $8.80 after 100 questions. That's about $1.81 an hour. That is such a ridiculously low wage, not to mention nowhere near the $3-$9 I was told I would make while going through the training. I think this is a terrible way to treat the "independent contractors."
Answer faster. You're taking too long. I texted chacha the other day and it took 5 minutes for them to answer. That was probably you. Get your answers down to 1:30 or 2:30 and you hourly wage will increase.

I'd just like to say thanks! Because of guides like you speaking out, ChaCha has changed their policy somewhat (not completely) as of today. The number was lowered to 200 and there's some flexibility for those who have made top guide a few weeks in a run. Still room to improve, but at least they're starting to compromise, which seemed to be biggest hurdle.

Actually, that's excellent. I've been watching the Guide forums pretty closely, and a number of threads have been started about these texts you all have been sending. It is easy to answer the strike question. Most will say, "Because I want to work." That you've gone ten minutes without an answer says that you probably won't get one. There are a couple things playing in our favor today: problems with their servers, fewer guides, and more texts.
There are an estimated 300 Guides on strike today. On any given day during the peak hours, there are maybe 1000 guides on. They must be feeling it a little. And they've just announced a whole bunch of contests for this weekend (funny thing to do when your servers are barely functioning).
The Guides that have been talking about our texts seem to be slightly peeved about them, but for the most part, they're thankful for the easy money, which isn't so easy on laggy servers.

Well, they only get paid for questions answered. If there's a shortage of people, then they see how much money they're missing. If they manage to answer those questions, they at least know why there is an odd spike of popularity, and where that came from, showing that Guides have a bit to do with getting customers. Yes. Exactly. I never txt. So I have to pay every time I do. My wife uses txts, so she has unlimited in network txts and 500 out of network txts. I don't believe Cha-Cha charged me anything. I wasn't really bitching, though. Just commenting. I was trying to make a joke out of it, but it appears to have fallen flat.

I did similar work in the late 90s. It was also piecework but I figure I averaged $15-20 an hour and I took my time to do a good job.
I think that even under the original arrangement you guys were being underpaid... Of course, maybe ChaCha wasn't making a profit even at the pittance they paid you.
I hope your strike succeeds. But even more I hope you find equally flexible and enjoyable but more remunerative work. Go Az!!

Actually, that's excellent. I've been watching the Guide forums pretty closely, and a number of threads have been started about these texts you all have been sending. It is easy to answer the strike question. Most will say, "Because I want to work." That you've gone ten minutes without an answer says that you probably won't get one. There are a couple things playing in our favor today: problems with their servers, fewer guides, and more texts.

There are an estimated 300 Guides on strike today. On any given day during the peak hours, there are maybe 1000 guides on. They must be feeling it a little. And they've just announced a whole bunch of contests for this weekend (funny thing to do when your servers are barely functioning).

The Guides that have been talking about our texts seem to be slightly peeved about them, but for the most part, they're thankful for the easy money, which isn't so easy on laggy servers.

Well, they only get paid for questions answered. If there's a shortage of people, then they see how much money they're missing. If they manage to answer those questions, they at least know why there is an odd spike of popularity, and where that came from, showing that Guides have a bit to do with getting customers. Win-win again.
