  • Awesome! More cowbell! ;)

  • It literally sounds like a song in itself, you wouldn't need any other instruments...

  • :D percussive goodness

  • fuck wow... not so keen on the hair tho...

  • fuck... wow

  • Danny Carey!!!! all that needs to be said

  • i"ve seen a lot of great drummers in my life but none as creative doing solos as steve, his band is not of my taste, but he is awesome.

  • ALOT better than Bonzo these days? ur high on ghb. Bonham could MAKE a song, not just fill one, or support one

  • @tool4janes There are tons that are better thatn Bonzo. He was great and had great power and groove, but he along with Peart are two of the most overrrated drummers in the history of music.

  • @SludgePunkGrunge yah, it's really easy these days to COPY a drummer, but these guys were original and didn't copy anyone. Creativity speaks mouthfuls. OVERRATED?!@?!~?!?!?! lmao let me guess, ur a lars fan, or the drummer from slipknot? lmfao

  • @tool4janes god you are stupid. If we use your logic Bonham coppied Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich so that means he was not creative..... 39 years old and you are about as smart as a retarded 4 year old. Please leave the discussion of drumming to real drummers (myself) and people with an IQ above 12.

  • @SludgePunkGrunge real drummers like yourself? thank you for the chuckle kiddo. I meant "copy" as reperform. Creating a solo or drum beat , rather than redoing what another drummer has done takes wayyy more talent. I cannot see how u can disagree with that statement. Could anyone else have come up with this solo by Perkins? no, because it is his original creation..

  • @tool4janes you lost the arguement so cry about it some more.

  • my favorite drummer, uses the entire kit at every jane's addiciton and porno for pyro show i went to. his beats are never the same from song to song. just a great drummer who is underated in my opinion

  • Why is everyone talking about Neil Peart? This isn't even close. And for those of you who apparently don't know Stephen Perkins has a huge following since the 80's because he's the drummer for Jane's Addiction. Anyone who's seen them live know just how intense he really is.

  • this guy is a piece of shit. HE SUCKS

  • Comment removed

  • @DrumCoalitionWithWar You have NO taste.

  • @jpwookie22

this isn't a solo, its just one BIG fill. It's lame!!

  • I really believe that if he had neil pearts kit.......those two could go at it for a longgggg time.

  • total Neil Peart....I like SP but he could have been a bit more innovative....I dont understand was it suppose to be a NP solo?

  • was that some parts of moby dick i hear?

  • @robostomo1 its Neil Peart.....have a look in u tube its everywere YYZ live in exit stage left...........

  • i really like this solo. it flows really nicely.

  • Funky

  • I don't really like Jane's Addiction but Stephen is a great drummer

  • Seen hundreds of bands & Janes Addiction countless times & Steve Perkins is the best drummer i have ever seen live........by a long way. the guy is faultless.

  • Strange to read comments about a solo that people heard through a computers sound system. You guys are delusional if you think you can comment negatively on Perkins or anyone as a drummer. I's not in the spirit of drumming, or music in general, NONE OF YOU HAVE EVER DONE ANYTHING HAS EVER HEARD fuck off and play sport.

  • not a well put together solo. he needs to show off more than just single strokes

  • haha "this guy". im not saying hes anywhere near the best drummer out there but hes the heart of janes addiction and that is so much more than any competition. i think he has more fun than any drummer alive

  • Agreed and that´s why there are some other famous drummer as Chad Smith which are invited to drum clinics too .

  • Bruce Willis?

  • No Stephen Perkins^^

  • he's still pretty much on Fire!

  • What is that china he keeps hitting around 5:07 I love the sound of it

  • Thats not a china its a zildjian hybrid trash crash.

  • after watching the eric moore video this solo is pretty lame

  • Has anyone else checked out the Perkins BEHIND THE PLAYER dvd? I hear its packed with cool stuff!

  • what are the drums above the left hi-hat (to the immediate right of the bongos)?

  • (it kind of looks like there is one above the floor toms too, but it doesn't even sound the same .... are these trigger pads? the one's by the left hi-hat sound more like acoustic drums)

  • they almost look like timbales but they could be roto toms.

  • Roto toms

  • There now roto toms there dw piccolo toms.

  • I meant to say "NOT" not now.

  • they all have their own styles and SOUND. No drummer would sound the same. compare dave weckl and steph..never alike. BOTH are really good. they all convey different feelings when we listen to them.

  • i didnt really think this guy was that good. i really went there for +44

  • Comment removed

  • i think its funny how the contestants that are labled amateur drummers are like 8 million times better than himm..this solo was so lame...watch jerome flood or donnie marple they rip on perkins

  • Once them dudes come and drum for one of the best bands of alltime then you can say something sitting their like a jealous homo bitch does nothing for ya !!!!!

  • I agree.

  • @coloredtoad wow, ok maybe you just chose your words really badly, but seriously man try to leave your homophobia out of this, and just a quick note - just because you're in a big band, doesn't mean your all that great, example: Meg White, some of the best drummers in the world are undiscovered (or don't wnat to be 'discovered')

  • @specialness16 Sorry. I accidentally voted your comment down. It was meant for the moron below you.

  • @cjonesufc no worries :)

  • yo please dont say anythin about perkins wen he is such a great drummer, this wasnt his best soo but i can probably bet alot of money tht will say tht perkins will rape u anyday so please dont say some pullshit wen ur not even hlf as talented as him

  • perkins is a bad ass drummer, but i dont think he compares to danny carey of tool, and not nearly close to peart. But hell, very very few are close to that level.

  • best drummer ever!!!! viva stephen

  • there is no question that from like 1:40 to 4:00 is all from the YYZ solo in Exit Stage Left...man ive listened to that solo too many times :P..........

  • not that impressed after watching buddy rich, steve gadd, and dave weckl

  • I think he is trying to recreate Neil Peart solo from YYZ.

  • boring

  • A well constructed solo!

  • im glad they gave it to my boy daniel rodriguez that year this guy is wack seriously with them gay ass punk rock beats that even my sister can do no really she can.

  • There's plenty more than "punk rock beats" in there...... you obviously can't hear properly.. are you a bassist? lol

  • what else is in there and at what time does he play it. no im not a bassist.

  • Yea I love Perkins in Jane's Addiction but he's just ok here

  • Any one else hear Neil Peart in that solo?

  • I heard Peart loud and clear

  • me three

  • me four

  • I thought it was me. Sounds like the solo on "Exit Stage Left"

  • me four.

  • rodriguez did so much better with a much smaller kit lol ironic

  • look at the whole set shake just from hitting the bass drums.

  • Way too geared towards one side of drumming.

  • Hey wagglemonkey is this solo punkish because of his mohawk or is this punk music to you. Also he is playing alone so by definition isnt this a "solo".

  • too punkish not enough soloy flare it sounds like he needs a guitar to be along with what hes playing.

what im saying is that it wasnt enough of a SOLO for me

  • if bonham was still alive he'd kill everyone at every drum off there ever was

  • or Max Roach and Buddy Rich!!!

  • agreed.

  • I'm sorry, but I have to say it. Bonham wasn't that great. He was the first to use SOME popular advanced techniques in popular rock music, but he was nowhere near what anybody before him was. It's like Drumr4Jesus said, Buddy Rich.

  • "Bonham wasn't that great" Uhhh, I think you need to go back and listen to Bonham. Buddy Rich is my all time favorite drummer but you can't compare the two. Buddy Rich is hands down the best Jazz drummer (and soloist imo) of all time, John Bonham is the best rock drummer of all time. Buddy would smoke John at Jazz and John would smoke Buddy at rock. They are equal levels in their respective genres imo.

  • I'd have to disagree... Bonham's good even by today's standards, but I think that drumming has progressed past him. Not to say that he wasn't innovative and an integral step in the evolution of drumming, but there A LOT of much better drummers out there today.

  • @wetwilly0 that´s like if you say there are A LOT of much betters guitar players than Hendrix,c´mon man!!!!

  • @TheBeowulf2 In reference to technical skill, yes, there are many way better guitarists than Hendrix. I don't think that many of them could capture the feeling that Hendrix had in his playing, though.

  • i hope he dint win that year. i mean hes good but still i dont know i just dont like his playing. the only part i liked was the part were he is hitting the bongos.

  • juanbarros88, I hope you can play better than Steve. Talking all that I know better than you shit. What great songs have you contributed to? Keep Steve Perkins name out of your mouth, Dumbass.

  • he does have skills but go listen to Neil Peart's drum solo from exit stage left in the 80's and you'll hear that Perkins ripped him off listen from about the 2 minute mark when he starts playing the bongos.

  • Neil Peart is one of his influences...

  • Great solo! My favourite drummer :)

  • He has skill but it was such a straight up boring solo. Not much taste. He just kinda did the same rock beat with the same accents the WHOLE time. No diversity. He is a great drummer but didn't deserve to be in the grand final.

  • great solo

  • fucking awesome shit i like a lot!!!!!! i cant say anymore

  • this guy is good but daniel rodriguez owned!!!

  • i just played a drum duet with him a few days ago. fun stuff.

  • you may think perkins sucks but he's probably doing this solo on a shitload of drugs which is pretty amazing

  • i highly doubt it

  • you suck stop playing lollollollollollollollollollollollollollollol

  • He is a Awsome guy and really creative. I hear all these he isant the greatest soloer. Well i would like you got listen to the first 3 Janes albums. I can not think of a single drummer who has appear on 3 albums yet not repeated himself while still being approprite for the music, thats something to be proud of. Yes I am sure there are some that are faster but how fast, there always is but is there someone as realivent and creative. So many drummers use the same stuff over and over not him.

  • I met Mr Perkins at a lalapolusa (1996) he was really cool about It and we had a fairly long talk he is very nice and down to earth

I think he is able to use tone in his drumming like no other

If you listen to this piece again you will find parts that resemble a "Tecno" song but accomplished with a fast drum role thats why he has so many drums for Tone

He brakes into "drumming" only now and again he really would win a music contest but not a purely drumming contest (they just cant get it)

  • always keeps it interesting, never thought id see that from him

  • dude that sounds like mission immpossiball!

  • Yeah this guy is pretty sweet.

  • Such an awesome sounding kit and great performance. For all the dumbasses saying he sucks... How come he's on stage kicking ass and you're not?

  • yeah at 2:34 it is the same beat just at a slower tempo without the crossovers and bad ass cow bell meoldie

  • I agree he's not the best soloist... but, listen to some of the drum parts he's contributed to great music.

All the chops in the world doesn't equate to good music.

He's contributed to great music. That's why he's my favorite drummer. This is a lot of 16th & 8th notes.

  • juanbarros88 please stop with that jazz/fusion thing and how complexed it is and blabla...whatt is really your point? go listen to jazz/fusion and stop posting here million of your comments.we understand that you have a very very good ear for music and complexed and highly developed sense for sound, but some of us mortals really prefers basic and simple drumming.and who do you call real musicians? only those who like fusion i guess?come on... maybe you are way better then perk, so post yourself!

  • Excellent performance!!

  • if it is all based on opinion so much why are you sitting there watching this solo bitching about it? you are so cool with fusion. i like fusion but come on, you're not that cool because you listen to fusion. maybe steven has such a big kit because he wants different sounds? idk, i guess that is a crime.

  • do you happen to know how old neil peart is? maybe that is why he takes breaks ya think? if you know anything about his solos you'll know why the beginning is the way it is then. it was all insipired by african drum circles. his solos are tributes now that's why he plays almost the same solo every night. do you know anything about his solos?

  • dead panda, have you listen to Jazz Fusion????? Are you a musician??? for how long have you been playing??? If you are getting better, you'll see what Im talking about, its okay to have your own taste, but if you want to be a great musician, not a popular musician, you should listen to jazz and Fusion or classical music, Thats what my teachers recommend, ask any good musician and they would tell you that Fusion is a more complex genre.

  • Really Sad, People just dont get it, Im mad

  • Rock solos are sooooooo gay, too repetitive and very basic rhythms, just like the solos by Neil Peart, paused and repetitive. Why was he on the finals, no fusion drummers that year, the winer was the only fusion. I think Oerkins never listen to Fusion or Jazz, very basic stuff, I would dare to make a solo like that and even worse he did it in the drum off

  • 3 years into Drumming and I already know Fusion is better than Rock musically, thats quite fast learning..jajajaja. SOme people take longer to know that, some others never learn, they stay in the same level. Its okay If you dont agree, learning is a process, It can be a long process for rock listeners, Im glad Im not into rock that much anymore, Im over that, Im on another level.

  • I can believe it, he was in the finals???? He's solos are not that impressive, kinda boring.... He's a rock drummer, of course he couldnt win. He thought he could win with that simplicity, boring tom thing, its funny how he starts his solo with the cymbals. Plus he is suppose to be professional and i've seen many non professionals better than him, mostly those Fusion influenced drummers, he played for Jane's Addiction, didnt he??? come on!!!!

  • fef

  • Simple, clean, crisp, and amazing. Hes got feeling, loves what he does, makes it sound melodic. Cant stop my head from bouncing up and down. Being a drummer is all about having fun. NOT how technical you can get.

  • Anybody else hear quite a bit of "The Rhythmic Method" in there?

  • a little...

  • love the barefoot playing, but i personally like much darker cymbals

  • like K's and K customs?....

  • very nice xD

  • it sounds like hes playing stop at the beginning

  • Very Unique style

  • He Feeling the drums, i like it!

  • Power and control maaan, perkins is incredible

  • lol he partially took some of peart's cowbell beat haha

  • partially? almost all.

  • lol pretty much haha

  • One of the strongest elements in Jane's and Porno has been Perk's druming. He also seems a perfectly modest guy, unlike a lot of rock star primadonas.

  • the solo reminds me alot of neil peart rush solos

    both fantastic drummers

  • this was by far the best off the gc drum off vids i've seen

  • Seriously, you dont have a clue, tell that to real musicians, drummers and they would prove you wrong. If its really a matter of taste and not of skill, technique or feeling, then its okay to say what you said...The other contestant was way better, more complexity, more skill, much more feeling and doesnt make it sound repetitive, morecreative in other words.

  • tell me who's a real "musican" or "drummer"

i've noticed that you seem to hover around the comments of this video

and for what? if you asked any one of the drummers that you look up to, they'd probly tell you that you have no fucking clue what you're talking about

there is no best drummer, there is no best genre of music, there is no best musician or musical concept of anything

    and get this one

    PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN TASTES

so for all it matters, seriously, you dont have a clue

  • seriously WTF!!!!!! That pisses me off, Inever said that there's a best drummer, I just said that musically Fusion is a lpt more complex in every musical aspect there is. That doesnt make it the best genre, its not even popular, in that aspect, Fusion is really horrible but I would say that its better musically, any musician that has good ear(thats what I mean by real musician) can tell you that. harmonies and rhythms are more complex in Fusion thats all Im saying

  • How can it be more complex in every way? That's not even possible, since right now I could at the very least make up a way that it isn't. You're trying to tech up your talk to sound way more cool than you really are.

  • damn i want that kit

  • damn i want that kit

  • Well, he looks passionate...

  • From someone who knows Stephen very well personally and professionally, including directing his "A Drummer's Life" DVD, I can tell you that he is an amazing person, with unlimited love and dedication to the art of drumming, who out of the goodness of his heart donated one of his personal kits without GC asking to a young audience member at this very event. So, anyone here that wants to disparage him obviously is ignorant and only reflecting the bleakness of their own reality.

  • rogersat, you're an idiot. you are NOT more knowledgable than everyone here, and we're CERTAINLY not going to just take your WORD for it because you throw around useless buzz words like "mature" and "difficult". Put up or shut up, and quit talking out of your ass...

  • very cool!

  • you spit weak game my son, the bigger the set, the more sound, instead of your 5 pc. sears set, you get a more intricate, modified, sound that you have to work to get.

  • Why does promote PDP drums but play DW's? I know DW own's PDP but he's listed on PDP's website as a PDP artist and not on DW's...?

  • rogersat, Im 18 and I have been playing for 15 years. In some sense you are right he is using alot of basic ideas and rudiments but what makes him so great is that even with simpler ideas he can create an amazing improv solo

  • if your head gets any bigger, windows will have to come up with an upgrade for vista, so we can take in all of your verbal ambience

  • you are an absolute idiot.. if you have been playing for so long, explain what drumming means to us very amateur drummers and or drum enthusiasts..

  • you are 19 so you quite clearly have not been playing drums longer than everyone you tool

  • long enough to know he's not as good as Fusion drummers like Weckl, Colaiuta, Phillips, Chambers, Bissonette, and drummers on that level. and Drums is not just a hobby, Im Taking Classes at College and Im on the right track so far, my father is a professional Musician and he can tell you that!!!

  • Steve Perkins OWNS.

  • someone just turned me on to this....holy #&*%!!!!! rogersat i think you may have a problem w/ envy

  • i was at this performance, his 26" kick made such a thud over the pa that i thought i was going to have a heart attack.

  • Wow

  • Lets see your drummin skills bud, perkins will no doubt smoke your ass.

  • you are an idiot

  • perfect example of a drummer who needs to put down others with more talent, experience, ideas, maturity, AND DRUMS than he has in order to compensate for being a bitter old man.

  • well ur dead wrong because i met him and interview him before a gig for my radio show n he couldnt of been nicer so ur talkin out ur ass

  • apparently you have no idea how hard it is to get to the Guitar Center Drumoff Grand Finals.

  • They let him on the finals, because he's a known rock drummer and he's kinda professional. but if he was a nobody he would not be on the finals, they didnt make him the winner because obviously the other finalist was way better and you can see it right away, come on the other is a fusion influenced drummers, dont compare Rock to Fusion Musicians, never, its a mistake

  • I'm not saying he's the best drummer around, but he still contributed to the unique sound of jane's addiction a lot.

  • I'm not saying he's the best drummer around, but he still contributed to the unique sound of jane's addiction a lot.

  • agree

  • dude i loveee his style, the feel of his beats are very fun and exciting to listen to

  • he took some neil peart nuances!

  • Awesome

  • Definitely one of my favorite drummers. Tis cool to see a double bass with him; he doesnt usually play with those.
