Oh my God - how the memories flooded back when I watched this! Rhodesia was such a special place and the years of UDI showed just what all Africa could achieve with good government and responsible leadership.

ZANLA and ZIPRA were hosts in the frontline states and as such were defended by those host states armies. Occasionally they would engage Rhodesian forces with armour. On Op Miracle Sep/79 Mozambique Army engaged us with T-55's but were driven away by arty, air & ground assets. PF forces lost all of those engagements. ZIPRA were more classically trained in warfare and had armoured forces using outmoded T-34's, BTR-60's etc. See last 90sec of 'Rhodesian Externals' for Op Miracle footage.

I am just inquiring about a subject that interests me. I am aware of the average age of WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, and present conflict age averages. It just seemed odd to me that a 40+ year old man would continue such a rigid lifestyle considering that the average retirement age us most Soldiers is 45 years old. I am 37 and I continue to Soldier on with a little over 17 years of service.

Some say the opposition was lame but I think not. They learned from their early mistakes and by the time of Op Miracle & Uric in 1979 they were on their game. Every Rhodie soldier who took part both black and white should hold their head high - until death I am proud to have known and served with you brothers.

I was 22 when I enlisted in the Rhodie Army in 1979. I will be 52 this September. There were many in the Rhodesian Forces who were 16-17yrs of age - they considered me an old guy. They would be in their late 40's now - old enough to soldier. The war started in 1965 and there were many serving in the Rhodesian Army in 1979 who took part in those early skirmishes. FYI there are grave markers of Canadian soldiers at Vimy in France who were plus 50 years of age at the time of their death in WW1.
We got on with our lives. Some carried on the fight elsewhere - some gave it up - and some are still fighting (Joe Bresler KIA Iraq 2007 and Bob MacKenzie KIA Sierra Leone 1994). Most, I think, look back and remember with pride the service we rendered in the Rhodesian/Zimbabwean Army. I knew them once - they were a special breed of servicemen.

What the British descents call Rhodesia (Rhodes + Area) was named after Cecil Rhodes captured the territory for the British government to colonize. Isn't it amazing that the "war Veterans" that came out the woodwork and declared that Rhodesia was now Zimbabwe because they fought off our loyal heros, were either babies at the time or small kids. There are no recorded victories against Rhodesian forces, by either Zipra or Zanla. rhodesia, no they are not, for south africa, mandela did a decent job, but his successors did not. Color isnt the problem so much as being raised under the concept. Did the ZANLA/ZIPRA have combat vehicles that would engage the Rhodesians?

ZANLA and ZIPRA were hosts in the frontline states and as such were defended by those host states armies. Occasionally they would engage Rhodesian forces with armour. On Op Miracle Sep/79 Mozambique Army engaged us with T-55's but were driven away by arty, air & ground assets. PF forces lost all of those engagements. ZIPRA were more classically trained in warfare and had armoured forces using outmoded T-34's, BTR-60's etc. See last 90sec of 'Rhodesian Externals' for Op Miracle footage.

I am just inquiring about a subject that interests me. I am aware of the average age of WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, and present conflict age averages. It just seemed odd to me that a 40+ year old man would continue such a rigid lifestyle considering that the average retirement age us most Soldiers is 45 years old. I am 37 and I continue to Soldier on with a little over 17 years of service.

Sorry to blow the horn dudes but every time I look at this video comp I can't help but think of how admirably the Rhodesian Forces performed during this conflict. Some say the opposition was lame but I think not. They learned from their early mistakes and by the time of Op Miracle & Uric in 1979 they were on their game. Every Rhodie soldier who took part both black and white should hold their head high - until death I am proud to have known and served with you brothers.

What would be the average age of some of these former Soldiers?
I am curious because it was mentioned that some of these former Soldiers are in or were in AOs like SL and IRAQ. I noticed that there were some security fellows in the "Green Zone" in Kabul that were from Africa (so I was told). Not to say they couldn't have been from a country other than Rhodesia/Zimbabwe
I didn't mean to offend with my prior question but I just wanted a response from someone that live in Rhodesia at the time

I was 22 when I enlisted in the Rhodie Army in 1979. I will be 52 this September. There were many in the Rhodesian Forces who were 16-17yrs of age - they considered me an old guy. They would be in their late 40's now - old enough to soldier. The war started in 1965 and there were many serving in the Rhodesian Army in 1979 who took part in those early skirmishes. FYI there are grave markers of Canadian soldiers at Vimy in France who were plus 50 years of age at the time of their death in WW1.

We got on with our lives. Some carried on the fight elsewhere - some gave it up - and some are still fighting (Joe Bresler KIA Iraq 2007 and Bob MacKenzie KIA Sierra Leone 1994). Most, I think, look back and remember with pride the service we rendered in the Rhodesian/Zimbabwean Army. I knew them once - they were a special breed of servicemen.

Do you feel a sense of betrayal from the US, UN, Africa and Zimbabwe?
I seems to me that the white community within Zimbabwe is somewhat disenfranchised and that "white issues" are thrown by the wayside? Do you that that is true and why, if so? Oh, you mentioned IRAQ/SL, Aegis, Sandline, EO or NSG?

Breaks my heart.... we used to joke that you could visit Rhodesia and see the ruins of Zimbabwe and in the future you will visit Zimbabwe and see the ruins of Rhodesia.
All races have suffered, no-one has gained apart from Mugabe and his henchmen and we stand by and watch our black Rhodesian brothers living a terrible life.

If Japan had invaded the US and Germany the UK you would all know what it is like to lose your country. The pity of it is that democracy in Africa does not exist. The real losers are those blacks and whites left in Zim (the 'povo')
