What im still thinking about is... Why you were asked to do "Digital Pencils"? i mean... after this, was this digitally inked? or by hand?... because... if the inks were digital too, what was the porpoise of the Digital pencils? PLEASE ANSWER! Thanks Mr. Brooks :)
@ernesin149 The page is printed out in none photo blue and then inked by hand. If this was going to be digitally inked I would have simply inked it right after I did the layout.
Nobody ever seems to be able to tell me the answer to this, but when you are pencilling a page or cover, how do you know where to put all the black spots on the figures? Not the lines but the core shadowy looking spots. Are those spots just core shadow spots?
@jbyrd117 It takes a lot of practice in understanding how lighting works on figures and objects. Different light effects a figure different ways and practicing from drawing from life in the only way to learn how to do it. There's no real trick, just hard work and patience. I'm still learning myself but growing as an artist is the only way this job stays fun.
@jbyrd117 I´m not even close of being a professional comic artist, but my guess is that it is a mix of understanding of light and composition. If you pay attention, the light does not always come from the same place, You carefully choose where it looks more interesting..
@MyananPowI'm not Mark, but.... traditionally they mean "fill with black". Pencillers usually marked big masses of black with little x's and didn't shade, as they expected the inker to understand what to do.
Mark, I actually commented on the first day you posted the video, but I don't see the commment anywhere. Basically I loved watching this and your other vids, that's an incredible process and the end result is amazing. I would live to embed these videos on my creative blog for people to check them out. Would that be a problem? Thanks
Hey Mark, I know doing it digitally saves time, but do you ever worry about not being able to sell the original? This is really awesome by the way. I'm trying to watch it in slow motion so I can learn haha.
Great work like always man,i can see you have a better control in composition while using digital, i tought you liked more traditional. Because of the speed.
isee u do this and u make it look easy... then i think to myself "pfft i can do that sh*" then i go and try to draw things.. it looks like crap and i end up punching my wall. so thanks for that. now i have a hole in my wall
damn, man. much as i really have been loving Mike Choi's art, I think I can very easily say he has some damn good competition! kudos and keep doin' your thing man!
ive been following you on deviantart as well and 2 things, music choice for the vid = awsome and second you have been an inspiring artist for me and to see the stuff you do is just soothing to the heart. you have awsome skills and i love your stuff so good luck with everything. cheers
Wow. Simply wow. Mark, your artwork never ceases to amaze me. I actually picked up a Cintiq a month or so ago. I've been practising with a pencil brush, but i've gotta admit...If i'm ever half as good as you are with yours i'll die a happy man.
Damn Mark... that was so awesome! Also made me appreciate the fact I own one of your originals... almost like having an example of an extinct species!
@mirth181degrees HA! Not extinct yet, just choosier about that I do traditionally. And all the inks are still done traditionally so there are originals out there=)
@leftinpuertorico If Manga Studios' layout and interface looks EXACTLY like Photoshop's, then somebody's gonna have a copyright-related problem. Yeah, that's Photoshop, btw. Nice job, Mark - you clearly have more patience with the software than I've ever had.
What are all those α symbols for? What is suppose to be there in the final verion? Is that for the inker of the person doing the colours?

So, are the panels pre-determined or do you draw, and then adjust the panels to fit the picture?
I Also love that you used the "butterfly" shape to represent the traditional psychic powers of Psylocke. (I think that's right... right?)
xoff999 8 months ago
@xoff999 Thanks! I get a mental picture of how I want the page to look and layout my panels accordingly. I'll change them slightly as I go if needed.
