  • Cinematography par excellence.

  • omg this was the same thing that happened to me, my vietnamese girlfriend told me the exact words, but because of her family and her pride, she said I had a tender heart and I was a real good loving man, but we could not have a future together do to her culture and her pride.. this made me feel exactly how I felt..if only you knew how much I love you Phuong Tran

  • @David012186 thats bullshit it should be known that race does not exist. all the migrations and intermixing of the past, plus according to genetics race is nonexistent, confined to the realm of appearance alone. there is but one race and that is the human race, and any statement to the contrary is racism.

  • To the director, Scott Hicks, you make me proud to be from your home town, Adelaide, South Australia. I love this film and scene so much. There are few things on film that I feel that I can relate to, or of films that can relate to me. You have captured heart break and devestation on film so precisely. The dialogue and music are intense. I feel that only a person who has ever had a broken heart can truely understand and appreciate this film. A true masterpiece. This is what art is albout.

  • 4:50 not to sound ignorant but are those naked body parts scattered across the battle field by the shore? if so, how did the limbs of soldiers become naked and have no cloth or fabrics covering them?

  • My girlfriend just broke up with me tonight and she said the same thing: "Christopher, I know you will do great things in this world. You have such a tender heart." I didn't say it aloud but I was feeling the same as Ethan Hawke at the end of this clip. It hurts and my heart is heavy as a thousand suns. I miss her. Each time a girl breaks up with me, I find it harder and harder to open up and let down my guard with the next girl. Eventually I will be unable to love at all. G'night Elissa.

  • @RedShipsofSpainAgain Immediately after i watched it years ago it was in my top 20 and I cherish this film since then. I know what u're talking about: and it's always the women leaving us men, would'nt you say??

  • @RedShipsofSpainAgain It was a cold evening after a wonderful day together, mostly in each other's arms and not talking much, kissing, staring at one another, and then she goes 'beserk': we must say goodbye, this is not good, maybe you're falling in live with me...I said, maybe I love u a little, after all this time I am starting 2, and she forces it, and we say goodbye; I'll never forget you! What abou u?

  • @gs032009 Yeah that sounds familiar. Well since you ask, my girl got an internship in another city about 4 hours drive from our school. She relocated and I had to stay for classes. But every Friday afternoon I'd drive to see her and visit for the weekend. When gas was $4/gallon. It was...difficult having to leave each Sunday evening. One weekend she's behaving differently. Quiet. Something was wrong but I was too inexperienced to recognize what was happening. The best part is once I

  • @gs032009 ...finally returned home after the 4 hour drive, I get a call. It's her. And she's crying uncontrollably. I ask what's wrong. Between sobs, she tells me. I felt so betrayed. And why didn't she tell me face to face just a few hours earlier? Break-up over the phone? No honor. Cowardice. Of course it hurt, but I take it in stride. These things happen. I'm sure somehow I caused it and so I take responsibility. But chicks are a dime a dozen; there're plenty out there.

  • I`m a woman with a lot of bad problems in my bagage,.These storys startet me to hide myselt and the feelings, behind a cold face ,.The First time, when I saw This Story in The Movie and listening to the Beautiful Music-I Did get my feelings back for that moment-and startet to cry!Absolutly One of the best movies I´v seen,!Wonderful is a small word for it.Ucant really find the right word for a Movie so beautiful like this.Mayby I call it´s a "Lovely and Sad" Fantasy -with a touch of Happyness?

  • This is possibly the most underrated film in history. It received only one nomination for, best cinematography and in my opinion it should have won that . I also can't believe that none of the actors were nominated and that score was so overlooked in awards season. This is possibly one of the best films Ive ever seen and i believe it was robbed of many deserving awards.

  • @balletomane369

This tugged on my heart strings! Wow I felt so bad for him.

  • I just discovered this film two days ago. Why have I not known about it? Wow. Brilliant. Everything from the script, the production design, directing, and of course acting, is amazing. This has moved to the top of my favorite film list. In 24 hours I've watched it twice now. There are so many layers and so much complexity to discover. This is true film making at its best.

  • Never understood why this film was so overlooked. I rentef it by chance and was blown away.

  • This is so Sad, if they were living in the 21st century there wouldn't be anything wrong with them two dating.

  • i agree, its underrated, its such a beautiful movie, and the score, of course, lol.

  • typical for women... they only talk about love...bla bla bla

  • @knollik LOL True

  • Did Hatsue's mother make hatsue write that note by force or on her own? I was confused since Hatsue randomly started reading the letter out loud to her mother. and if Hatuse did write the letter on her own why did she say it out loud to her family?

  • @mewminto4eva Of course she wrote it on her own. Her mother only in this moment let her know that she knew about her affair with Ishmael.

Hatsue read it loud to show that this affair was over.

  • This movie is on my list of movies to watch, but I was wondering if it had a sad ending? Or does it end happy?

  • @94beatlesrock

you'll have to see and find out! It's a very good film :)

  • stunning film, stunning

  • This is definitely one of the best movie scenes ever. It captures the complete essence of Ishmaels dilemma in a storm of pictures and sounds of just a few minutes. You have to watch it several times to grasp it in its entirety because every picture, every sound and every note has a meaning.

I especially love James Newton Howard's brilliant score. I imported it since it wasn't available in Germany and I've never regretted it for a second.

  • LOL!! "fuckin Jap bitch..."

  • Perhaps it doesn't need to be said, but this scene when taken out of context, may mislead some to misunderstand what the film is doing. However, after struggling with all of the effects of these and other experiences, he chose to honor the truth; respecting her, her family and her Japanese American husband.

  • this is so intense. i remember watching this movie when i was young but i fell asleep

  • This is a rare gem of a movie. The clips are spliced together so hauntingly, the light, the camera motion, the narration, everything hits you in a higher deeper level. Losing the arm and the "fucking Jap Bitch" line is icing on the cake. Brilliant stuff.

  • A truly underrated classic. I know some have a problem with the ending but that's the only way i could go---it also represented the fact that many of the heartbroken COULD move on, if they were only given a non-patronizing sign from their former beloved that they mattered-that their love was appreciated and will be remembered throughout their life. So often, that is never given and I think that's the source of pain. Great score, movie, truly underrated--cinematography too!

  • This scene is so intense. The most intense scene in the movie.

  • Ishmael is sexy

  • man i wish i could see this movie, just finished the book today and this scene is amazing!!

  • lol at the last line he says

  • @mandddiiiable there is absolutely nothing funny about the last line, it's the only time in the movie he acts purely out of racist anger...he's one of the truest characters and this was possibly the lowest moment in his life

  • @ListenClosely1357 In my opinion this was a protective mechanism.

On the one hand there was one Japanese, the woman he loved, who just left him. On the other hand there were other Japanese. People he had to kill for no other reason than their nationality, people who tried to take his life (and who were partially successful).

This created a situation he had to simplify, so he put her together with them.

    My 2 cents.

@94beatlesrock Actually it is neither (rather sad). But it is morally "right".

  • but the story is so sad...=( and doesn't the girl hate ishmael in the end? i mean its just all so depressing...

  • i know half of the time i was just like 'get back together already!' poor ishmael...

i don't know about the film but in the book she certainly doesn't hate him ever

  • beautiful scene, amazing music, well written script, directing everything is top notch. The score TARAWA brings such intensity to this scene. Amazing, one of the best, maybe the best scene in the movie!!!! Amazing filmmaking!

  • Holy crap. This is totally like the book. The ending of this scene was like exactly like how I imagined Ishmael XD! <3 Thanks for posting this!

  • so sad.

  • such an underrated film!

  • Hopefully this movie will grow in stature through the years like "Its a Wonderful Life", it deserves that kind of recognition. Thanks for posting this!

  • I thought Kevin Spacey was good in "American Beauty" but Ethan has become such a good actor and he;s really under rated. I thought this movie could have been in at the very least 3 spots for an Oscar and was only nominated for cinematography. I mean, Max could have taken best supporting. Ethan could have at least been in for a nom. fucking gladiator anyway, all my friends fell for that shit, this was so much better.

  • if i were hatsue, i would have broken my tradition and ran away with ishmael. anything for love!!!!

  • I think you are missing the point of the book and this story. What you wanted her to do was almost unthinkable and virtually impossible at that time, even in the minds of those who felt love outside of their race.

  • This movie was the most unexpected and beautiful surprise I've ever happened across, its a movie everyone should see.

  • @DreadedBill watch thin red line!:)

  • Kageronin, Asians might have values that Americans dont have, but love isn't as discrimnatory as you are.

  • for once a White guy doesn't triumph over an Asian guy for the love of an Asian woman. Idealistic American love cannot overcome Asian Culture/Tradition/Honor. This is one of the few movies and novels in the media that actually allows this reality to take place

  • You don't know how right you are.

  • i think you missed the point of the novel. lol

  • And yet, much to your dismay and resentment I imagine, such White-Asian love and romance does occur. I think attitudes such as yours are poor and bigoted. So sad.

  • Beautiful.

  • Could you please post the entire movie?

  • Unfortunately, YouTube won't allow it for this one, because it was put out by Universal, and Universal and 20th Century Fox both come down hard on the copyright thing

  • Where I can see this movie, or buy it .. please !

  • can u put the whole movie

  • Go buy it... it is incredible.

  • I absolutely love this film.I am mesmerized by this scene and the imagery. It is spectacular. I think that anyone who has had their heart broken feels the despair Ishmael is feeling. I don't understand her, it seems that she doesn't love her Japanese husband at all.Ethan Hawke's performance is wonderful and heart wrenching,we simply don't feel any compassion for Houtsu because she seems cold and dispassionate. Truly a film gem that was over looked. I'm glad I came across it in a 5&dime store!

  • I just wanna know at the end of everything if she ever EVER! loved him as much as he loved her. Its like the most beautiful thing ever broken just like that. The end of the movie alreaedy gave me a hard time.

  • sad sad sad... but beautiful...

  • This is one of the best scenes from a movie that i´ve ever seen in all my life... O_O

  • most excellent

  • good movie but its sad i dont like the end..she couldnt be with him because he was american and she japp..????

    Marissa Gh

  • This just reminded me how much I hate Hatsue. To think she told her husband (the one their parent chose for her!!) it was her first time making love! She didn´t really love Nathanael, her heart was as fickle as a tramp´s. If she really loved him, she´d have fought for him, no matter what. But no, she gave him up as soon as she was told to do so! In the end, even though he saved her husband, even though he didn´t have to do it, the only thing he gets from her is a bow!!?? Sick!

  • Hey.. I really hate the end too.

but i guess that's what makes the movie the best.

to tell the truth i dont think Hatsue knew what was love when she was dating Ishmael. Also she didnt like to her husband . it was her first time for sure. she didnt do it with Ishmael. but they were going to . that was the time when she fell his body moving against hers....

  • Even so, that´s not convincing enough to make me understand her position. I do regret, though, Suzuki Anne interpreted young Hatsue. I like her, and is indeed one of the cutest Japanese actresses in recent times.

  • She did do it with Ishmael. In the letter, she's not going to write, when you f me, of course she had to write when I feel your body moved against mine. She's a liar, and I don't like her.

  • she is not a liar! she was so young she confused her feelings... i think she get used to see him everyday under the tree, so when she got older she didnt stop until that day...i dont know but i still think that they didnt do it

  • actually, yeah. she did lose her virginity to Ishmael. read the book.

  • the reason why Hatsue did'nt fought for her love to Ishmael is that she is a jap, and he is an american and in that time it's really not possible... and she's now committed, she have kids and husband. u can never leave your husband just like that when you are a jap, and it's 1950's...

  • Perhaps, but don´t you know that real love overcomes racial barriers and cultural standars. People have even died fighting for forbidden loves. I´d gladly give my life for someone, IF I loved her. But Hatsue didn´t really love Ishmael, so... end of story. And I hope she died of cancer later, and her husband in a car crash. But, meh, we´ll never know.

  • come on, that love story you're saying only exist in some god damn dreams, be realistic...

that's the greatness of this novel or movie, it's a sort of fantasy but it's very real and it's really happening.

  • Is that so? Well, I wouldn´t be so sure. Love understands no reason, and that´s the reason why reality overran Hatsue´s feelings: because she didn´t love her. You want my opinion, I´ll give it to you: I dislike conservatism, and Hatsue gave in to it so fast it made me want to vomit.

  • because she like that guy, but there is this some circumstances that kept them apart. if u'll live in that era where jap & american fights u'll know how hard it was.that was she felt.if she'll live with Ishmael for the sake of love then what now?they can never walk on the street hand in hand, and live together in peace after that war. It was an interracial love story set after the world war 2. Even they don't live together, she knows for a fact that she'll love this man for the rest of her life.

  • How do you know that!? All I saw was Hatsue saying "thank you" in a rather pathetic manner, returning to the man their parents wanted her to marry with (yuck!), and Ishmael leaving like a lamb on its way to the slaughterhouse. Perhaps the idea that she´ll love him for the rest of her life is better but in the novel. If that´s the case, I´ll give it a shot... in spite of everything.

  • the movie kinda mess it up, so i'm looking at the novel, and that's my observation, that is how David Guterson i think would like to point out. That you don't be together forever if you're loving someone, u can love him/her forever though you're living separate lives.

  • ... okay, I see.

  • This scene is .... WOW! I saw this movie when I broke up with my bf and I cried a million tears watching this scene ... beautiful!!!

  • this is gold!!

  • I have heard that this scene is just absolutely one of the most heartwrenching of all filmdom history. Don't you not agree?

  • Great part of a great movie

  • Thanks for upload, this is my favorite part of the film, one of the best edited films i ever seen
