Alter may not see a pattern, but liberals and progressives do, and it's discouraging.

Throwing Sherrod under the bus is not wise politics. Neither is trying to appease Republicans with watered-down legislation only to discover that they're still fiercely opposed to it.

My fear is that Obama is taking his base for granted.

The election is not over. Obama needs his base to turn out in November if he expects any success at all in the next congress.

And that success is vital to his 2012 hopes.
