The "West" isn't as monolithic as CNN or other media outlets portray it. Plenty of differences between USA, Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc. Even within USA, for example, a lot of self-interests conflict with one another, and sometimes they coincide with Russia and China's self-interests. Also our governments, Academia and media do not speak for all of its citizen's interests.
US and Europe nag Russia and interfere with Russia's domestic issues. They don't treat Russia with respect. When Russia goes to China, it's treated with respect and as a friend.
Fareed, the "West" has not treated Russia as an equal over the past 20 years. The relations are one of broken promises and being patronizing towards Russia. These broken promises include the expansion of NATO into E.Europe. The "benevolent" West enabled Yeltsin to subvert democracy in 1993, which set the stage up for the rise of the oilgarchs and the financial crisis of 1998. Russia can get from the West what it needs if its profitable for the West, but Russia shouldn't be dependent either!
