Yes, I was taught this song @ school in Queensland in the early 1970's also. The music teacher split the class up. One group sang the song and the other sang the chorus (Waltzing Matilda my darling, etc, etc).
I had almost forgotten that it wasn't the formal version that is usually sung.
Remember, the song was originally concieved/ written here in outback Queensland, many years ago, before finding it;s way around the rest of the country.
only people with no nouse and never had a dunny budgies in the mouth would or should hang it on our song.. piss off out of this country if ya gunna hang shit on our song and get a dingo up ya.. bloody mongrels. fare suck of the sav hay !!!!
Welcome to the world Mathilda, our Oceanside owl hatched on 2/16 at 7:30 pm seen live on UStream. Named Mathilda since the owner of the owl box is from Aussie Land. Love this song, thanks for putting it on You Tube.!! 5 more owls to hatch. See them hatch LIVE on Ustream. It will warm your heart. Mel and Sydney are the proud barn owl parents.
@ShastaPacificRoad I think it is the better version of the song. We learned it at school in the 70's but the usual version was played more often, which is a pity. This version bounces along whereas the usual version sound more slow and worn out (particularly when sung as a school group who would rather be running around outside). One of our school song books had both versions in it and this one is listed as the Qld version in it. I don't know which version came first.
To understand this song you need to know that the reference to 'Waltzing Matilda' was a reference to execution by hanging. When people were hung during these days there was no professional executioner available, and people who were sentenced to hang were more likely to be slowly strangled at the end of a rope. The reference to the 'waltz' was a reference to the 'dance' that a person who was being 'strung up' in the air might make before he was finally suffocated.
I like this version. It only has an octave singing range as opposed to the standard version which is almost an octave and a half. The tune is just as good and I love Judith Dunham's "ghost vocal" at the end.
i have this record theres a lot of nice songs on there including lemon tree, a thousand miles, danny boy and more ! good you put it on ;-) brings back memories of childhood ! and trips in the family car on sundays
Dear TINAOldiefan, let"s dance and sing, and I can also highly recommend the live version of André Rieu of this song, posted by funniq, thanx for that one mate!

I think the best version I ever heard of this song was in the movie "On The Beach"...very eerie but beautiful at the same time.

Nice variation. First time I've heard it. Really wish the 'old' Seekers were still touring.
