  • I really love both Shots. I hope though that the some more shots of the steam locomotives going down hill at the summit occur. I love Up just as much as going down at the same location.

  • Thanks, I think people largely ignore the downhill shots as if you only have the one chance you will always go to capture the loco working hard ( well I would anyway!) but in some ways it's a shame as a train at speed makes a fine sight.

  • Really nice video.

  • Thank you, glad you liked it.

  • Climbing Shap Fell is steam travel at its most classic. A splendid recording making it all possible in the comfort of one's home!

  • Thanks very much, I agree with you about climbing Shap with steam, magical.

  • Wow! Enjoyed that, no end! Nice and steady panning and never lost sight of the loco! Great. 5*

    Alan

  • Thanks Alan, good that we now have the 'Duchess' for another 8 months, but in LMS black livery.

  • Livery is fine - hiding it all in a steel casing is not so good, for me!

  • @acw71000

I heartily approve. Now, Royal Scot as well, please.

  • Quite an excellent video !

Question:- the pusher at the back....is that thing free-wheeling ? or actually pushing ? Anyone know ?

    Thanks.

  • Thanks very much. I understand from people on the train that the diesel did not assist at any time. The climb of Shap was a preservation record with that load.

  • Thanks.

Perhaps it was there for heating purposes, then ?

  • The diesel is usually used for heating and also to make shunting the stock at either end of the journey much easier. It's much better now than in the 80's when they were coupled next to the steam loco!!

  • @northerner2 I was just going to ask the same question..I thought I was being a bit dumb..Thanks you beat me to it...

  • As ever Austin, top footage of this icon on Shap, Just hope it wasn't her swansong!

sounds and looks in top fettle, lets hope for a quick re-tube and a 3 year? ticket extension.

  • Thanks Andy, by all accounts she is in pretty good condition so we can hopefully enjoy her for a while longer.

  • Brilliant footage, Seemed to be a lot of coal being shovelled on the first part of your film. Powerfull indeed!

  • Thank you, and very impressive to think that the coal was being shovelled by a 74 year old.

  • Brilliant video as ever Austin. She just saeemed to brush the climb aside . Wonderful performance beautifully captured as ever. I'm a bit envious that I couldn't see this fine sight from the lineside she looks and sounds so powerful. Chris

  • Thanks Chris, I know what you mean about seeing her from the lineside but I'm sure you won't forget that exhilarating run you had on the train for a long time.

  • great footage, why was the tin shed attached to the back for the whole journey ?,not that 6233 seemed to bother !

  • Thanks, not sure,I assume it was to shunt the stock at Carlisle, as you say the Duchess didn't mind

  • Excellent coverage of this run from 6233 and what a wonderful sound from the Duchess.

  • Thanks, it was great to hear that sound in the distance and getting louder as she got closer.

  • What fantastic footage, amazing performance by the Duchess. Why don't I live in the north?!

  • Thank you, we are a little bit spoilt with so much steam up north at present

  • Excellent video Austin. 6233 certainly in full cry going up the bank. Hopefully we will see her again soon.

    Jeff

  • Thanks very much Jeff, a memorable day and yes it'll be great to see her back.

  • Awesome stuff Austin, top drawer.

  • Thanks a lot, awesome engine doing the job she was built for and driven and fired by two of the most experienced men around

  • Hi acw71000. Would you be interested in letting me embed your excellent film on the PRCLT (owners and operators of 6233) website

  • Now, if the NRM had interested in showing what steam locos are for, rather than just as something shiny to stick in a museum and look at, there could have been 6229 ready to pick up where 6233 left off.

  • Unstreamlined or streamlined, what's your preference.

  • I think it looks a lot better streamlined than i thought it would. it would look good with matching stock, I think.

  • Beautiful shots Austin, strange though, Shap with no rain ! It doesn't seem right !!.........Matt

  • Cheers Matt, it was really warm at Shap Wells with little wind, as you say it's not what you expect but I've no doubt it won't be like that next time.

  • She was really billowing with smoke over Shap Wells and a nice sound of her too in both scenes. I was planning to get her there but had to drop out due to ill health :(

  • Shame you couldn't make it and I hope you are feeling better now. The 'Duchess' was certainly a fine sight on Shap.

  • Cracking video at a great location

    Dave

  • Cheers Dave, we were lucky with the weather after the fog lifted.

  • Excellent. An awesome display from the Duchess.

  • Thanks, she was certainly on fine form, helped by a very experienced crew making their last run with the Duchess over Shap before retirement

  • Austin that is terrific, and the weather conditions were so favourable.

  • Thanks Ralph, I must admit to being a little worried driving north through the fog. We'll certainly miss the 'Duchess'

  • Superb record of the final (for a while) climb to Shap, Austin; and once again on the return leg. Very smooth camera work.

    Mike

  • Many thanks Mike, Hopefully the overhaul won't take too long
