I have not made anything new for several months. The house im in at the moment doesnt have any space for me to put up my workshop. But im hopeing that will change soon when I move again...(the sooner the better) I do not have a website as I dont make alot of knives...(yet)...they are only custom orders at the moment...but cant take any orders at the moment due to what I said befor about the house. Keep watching tho....Rob.
at 1:52 I show the actual speed at which I move the blade along the belt. Aso...i dont apply much pressure at all. I would rather do alot of passes and get it right...than do a few HARD passes and take off to much steel. Notice where my fingers on my RIGHT hand are....that is how I can hold the knife and the block at the same time.
I'm like everybody else, I like that idea with the wooden block!! why didnt i think of that ....LOL btw nice knife, I'm currnetly making one similar to that.
How did you get the angle so accurate?? I have a hell of a time trying to get them as crisp as yours. I see all the experts,just do it by eye,but i expect there was a lot of trial and error,before they reached that stage.
Go to a hardware store and get one of those angle thingys...(not sure what they are called) Its like a right angle but you can pivot one side. When you work out what angle you want...you set it and then cut it into a block of wood as I did.
Great idea with that guide wasteblock! Thank you! how many degrees has your grind? I've measured it out on my Mora knife (which is my first bushcraft knife and the best one for now :P) and it has 11 degrees on one side (22 on whole bevel). Could you make a video about grinding and making that guide block? I'm familiar with shaping the steel by hammer and forge and I'm a newbie in grinding :P Best regards from Slavic Poland, Greg
Honestly...im not really sure of the exact degree. I tend to do stuff by feel.
But around 20'ish sounds about right.
Thats a good idear for a video. But me myself...im not that experienced with the whole degree thing. I just know when its right. I constantly remove the blade and FEEL it with my fingers. The block was more to keep the blade steady so it ground evenly.
Neat setup. I like the guide block. I've been leery of grinding my blades with the sharp edge going "into" the belt, so to speak. Any problems with cutting into the belt at all?
Rob, sorry if I bother you again about work but why dont you try to look for a job as graphic designer or something? You are obviously very good at drawing and you have a good touch in direction of your own films. I suggest that you make a "commercial video" about yourself and put it up on you tube to get noticed by other people in that business.
But i will say it again. In this country you will NOT get a job without experience especially if there are hundereds of others WITH experience going for the same job.
looking really nice, love this style of knife....im trying (TRYING) to carve something similar, gather i'd start with wood and if it works out i might have a go at making a real knife
nice grind...keen to see how you do the handle...lanyard hole or no lanyard hole...? If you're after quality wood for your handle.. let me know ..lol ;)
great job Rob! like always your knives are awesome! i really liked the jig you used to do the edge, simple and smart! iam going to make one for my own use! i have the same belt sander, and i love it! looking forward to seeing the finished product!
Great job mate , not so humid here in SA at the moment, sounds like you are in the scrub with all the bird noises.Once again great job, lets us know how much you want for one of these.Cheers
That's nice! Hope I see you make the handles too. So... you have a plan to sell those in the future!? If so, that's another great news! Cheers, Ritchie
@RDPproject Rob, what is the thickness of the overall? Are you thinking of tapering the handle scale down to like 2 mm? Not your preference maybe, but I personally like the tapered down handle scale. It looks nicer, to me at least. Cheers, Ritchie
@RDPproject Sorry Rob, I meant the Tang, not the scale... So the Tang starts from 3.5mm thickness and gradually tapered down to 2 mm to the butt. Handle can be thicker with the material you choose. If you couldn't understand me..please forget about this. It was harder for me to explain then I've expected. :-o
do you have a website or something for knives you do sell? Finally found an australian knife maker

@RDPproject thanks what di you use to attach the bblade to the wood when grinding the grind on?
catapultkid1 6 months ago
@catapultkid1
Nothing...I just HELD it there.
That comes with some practice tho. But the belt sander does not bite as hard as it looks.
So I wasnt to worried abour getting my fingers 'sanded' a bit...lol

ArtistBlade1972 1 year ago
@ArtistBlade1972
No. i dont heat treat myself.
I send it away to be done by pro's. One knife cost about $8.
more knives...less $

@RDPproject I understand. It's probably more economical anyway...

@Makermook
No. As long as you dont make any sudden movements and
its NOT a sharp edge its fine.
But later as the edge is formed...I reverse the blade blank so im cutting away from the edge.

Have you done a Part 3? Kinda wanted to see it with the handle :-)

No mate...it still needs to be shipped off for heattreatment yet. Then the handle will be mounted and the video of it will be posted.

Does 440c need to be sub-zero tempered?
Are you sending it away for HT?
Well done 5/5

I think 440c can be done like other steels...(i think)
and yes...its being sent away for heat treating. To a company called Hills Heat Treatment. Google them.
Just realised ive not subbed you yet. thatll be fixed in a jiffy.

@RitchiePowell
Yes I am thinking about it.
I have also toyed with the idear of making these models with my
STEELflint design. That may be the next one along.
Also. I am designing a new logo to go with my signature.
When i make the handle scales, you'll get to see it.
RDPproject 1 year ago
@RDPproject Rob, what is the thickness of the overall? Are you thinking of tapering the handle scale down to like 2 mm? Not your preference maybe, but I personally like the tapered down handle scale. It looks nicer, to me at least. Cheers, Ritchie
RitchiePowell 1 year ago
@RitchiePowell
Um...the steel thickness was 4mm...the sides have today been beltsanded
to remove the outer rought surface...it is now around 3.5mm.
The scales will be *no less* than 6mm....if they goes any thinner than that. Then they are way to skinny for my hands.
RDPproject 1 year ago
@RDPproject Sorry Rob, I meant the Tang, not the scale... So the Tang starts from 3.5mm thickness and gradually tapered down to 2 mm to the butt. Handle can be thicker with the material you choose. If you couldn't understand me..please forget about this. It was harder for me to explain then I've expected. :-o

Yes Rich...I know exactly what you mean by Tapered Tang.
I will see what the weight is of the knife combine with the scales befor I decide
what to do.
RDPproject 1 year ago
@RitchiePowell
No, this will be very simmilar to the one
in your own video "Ray Mears / Sharpening a Knife at Camp_Part 1/2"
At its widest point it may be around 15-20mm...(including the tang thickness)
That size will be the handle end sticking out of the sheath.

The knive looks very nice. looking forward to the finished product.
thanks
