Actually, on YT there can be very helpful discussions. Before I thought that it's only logical if a MAN sings this beautiful song about his love towards a WOMAN, and not a woman about another woman. But I was told that Susan Graham sings it so beautifully and tenderly thinking about her DAUGHTER!:-) Well, then I accept it in a woman's interpretation too. Perhaps Lemieux sings her tender and emotional version thinking about HER daughter, or niece, any little girl at all? Anybody knows?:-)
It's beautiful, of course, and full of emotions. But I think there's more logic when a man sings about a woman's love. In a countertenor's voice it sounds just exceptional. But I mean a real countertenor and not that fake singer PJ who just produces sweet, empty sounds without sharing any soul and with all fake emotions. He is "a virus", profanation of countertenor's singing, art. The most beautiful version of A Chloris I've ever heard and full of TRUE emotions is Nicholas Spanos's! Exquisite!
@awmnk She bills herself as a contralto. If you listen to her high register, it has a heavy quality unlike a mezzo's, which tends to "pop" and shimmer. It's a different color. It's not the register, it's the timbre that determines the voice type, plus where the voice best "lies" and where the singer is most comfortable. M-N's voice works well in the middle register - warm and lovely and quite fluid
Hi actionsrlouder, she is a lyric contralto. Unlike Marijana Mijanovic or Delphine Galou, who are female contraltos who have a counter-tenor like sound, Marie-Nicole has a plush, full sound and a certain heaviness that is not found in the mezzo-soprano timbre. She does not have the full, heroic, deep voice of Nathalie Stutzmann, who is a true low contralto. Just like all other voice types, contraltos have different subtypes. This voice type is so rare, we have many less voices to compare.
This is what is needed for this song, this genre, a contralto. I love Philippe Jarrousky and we shouldn't compare, because his rendition is exquisite as well, but this, this thissss... aah, this takes me to heaven... A good contralto again, could it be, finally, please tell me yesss

I think she is a dramatic mezzo soprano...I don't think she is a Alto though.. Beautiful job I like it.
