that unit must have very low hours. I remember those and the lamps burned so bright they were short lived. in it's day those were pretty well built for a low priced commercial component. good find especially for free!
Well, hello again! (Long time, no see.) I was really quite surprised that all of the backlighting worked.
I agree wholeheartedly--this unit does seem to have a pretty solid build quality and it sounds pretty good. Now I just need to figure out what I will do with it. I'm sure I will come up with something.
Cool! Yes, these are for a large PA system. There is a similar receiver where I work, we listen to the radio over the PA, but its a more modern digital unit.
I'm in Michigan, but I'm a long long way from alberta. I'm probably closer to where you are than there.
My first radio in my room was an old tube AM radio in a wooden cabinet that drove a couple drive in speakers (yep the ones in a die cast box that used to hang on the window) that my dad got from a friend that got them from the outgoing lane of a drive - I guess people dropped them in a box if they forgot & drove off and yanked the cord out. Sounded good for the time. My shortwave in the shop is an old transistor based Halicrafters I got new in 74, works like new after I replaced one coupler cap
Those I';ve seen in older stores both as retail floor background and on PBX phone systems as a background or on hold music system although anymore the money grabbing RIAA is crying about radio rebroadcast as unlicensed public distribution of copyrighted music, so everyone including myself is using digital on hold systems that loop with royalty free music loaded for on hold or background. Good solid piece of equipment you got and its always good when its free.
Things like this don't seem as common here. What I usually see is an ancient stereo receiver pressed into doing the job. The most recent one I saw was an ancient "Concord" eight track + AM/FM receiver driving two speakers in a lawyer's office.
The RIAA lost the plot a long time ago. I have a record album sleeve that declares them to be "a non-profit organization dedicated to the betterment of recorded music and literature". ... Har har har.
@uxwbill I've seen all sorts of things for background or on hold over the years, back in stores in chicago as a kid through the work I do in commercial buildings. Not the same model but there's a smaller grocery I do camera work on (1985 surveillance equipment but with a modern dvr in place of the now dead betamax recorder) and their BG music system has been on the shelf in the back office since it was installed new. Even the speakers are the same. I had to replace some mouse chewed wires on it.
Speaking of background music, early one Sunday morning, I was in my local Safeway and they played Billy Idols' White Wedding over the p.a.! It was more then a little weird!
Bill, did you do something different with the encoding on this video? For some reason it just won't load right for me. :-( It goes in stops and starts.... really weird.
It's probably network weather or you got a connection to an overworked server. Give it more time on pause (to let it buffer out further) or reflect, repent, reboot and reload... :-)
@uxwbill Yeah I finally had to just let it sit paused for ten minutes. Really weird, my connection is fine (6mbit) and every other video loads instantly. I think YouTube stuck your video on a server in Saudi Arabia! :-D
25V / 70V is a really cool system, each speaker has a multi-tapped transformer where you select how much power goes to the speaker. Since this unit is 15watts it can drive 15 speakers at 1 watt each, or 30 speakers at .5 watts each or 60 speakers at .25 watts each. Something like this would be more than adequate to drive the speakers in a small to medium sized restaurant.
Well, despite what the Beatles sang about, I wouldn't expect there to be a live band on a submarine... :-) And entertainment radio broadcasts might not work all that well. I guess some music is better than none.
Radio Shack sold something very similar in the early to mid '70s, along with their PA speakers. This was back when many FM stations played Classical or Easy Listening music, so it could truly qualify as "background" music.
When I get my shop built (and I'm hoping that it still start this fall), the Sony STR-DH100 receiver that I repaired is likely to be the shop stereo. I'd much rather keep this one in a less stressful setting.
That is quite something...never ever seen one of those or anything like it...and you cannot beat free!
It *looks* really powerful and the display is really nice looking.
I dont think we will ever figure out why people throw out one speaker, nor will I figure out why people cut cords off of perfect things before tossing them.
It probably has more honest power backing it up than a lot of today's no-fi cheap-o stereo systems and even some lower middle range stuff.
I do have an idea or two about the cord cutting, having seen that as well. The first is a guess: people think the cords are more valuable because of the copper inside or something. (Recyclers have been known to say this around here.)
As for the more proven idea, sometimes it's convenience. If something was "built in", cutting the cord is an easy way out.
Nice unit sounds like a good tuner. Gotta love freebies
As for the speaker conundrum I don't know probably the same people who sell or give to goodwill an early mac without the proprietary keyboard I have 3, have had 7 all without keyboards.
thanks for this one

@thegeekredneck That would be Youtube's servers. Hit recycle and it usually comes up good after that.

Wow that kicked my mind back when I was in the NAVY on Submarines 25 years ago
I had to work on a sunstrand back ground system that played only sunstrand tapes
that fed out to all the headphone jacks in all the sleeping bunks. There is no actual live music on submarines.
Please keep the videos coming
