traditional kung fu is the only complete system the reason of not show in ufc is because killing is not allowed and controlling the opponent is more difficult than killing him specially if he is stronger than you that's why chin na techniques don't work here in ufc but that does not mean that kung fu doesn't work!
also the rules of ufc prevent hitting the vital points such as groin ,eye and throat which are the targets of real fight so being a chamb on ufc doesn't protect u in real fight
last thing you began by saying that the reason of learning martial arts converted from fight to sport or game like judo so why then you said that ufc is to determine the efficient techniques work for real fight?!
Agreed, the title is not really accurate as it really does not holistically or comprehensively look at the complete history of martial arts and is geared towards Japanese or specifically jiu jitsu. That said, I think really the history of martial arts in the west is predominately Japanese oriented when you consider the "DNA" of what most people do.
Chinese arts are out there of course, however, they have not really had much of an impact on modern applications of combatives systems such as MACP
Kimura was purportedly to have weighed about 185 and Santana, 205, however looking at pictures of Santana, I'd say he'd weigh closer to 185. Still Helio was about 130 lbs, so that is still a significant weight difference. Also you cannot dispute the fact that helio was in his 40s when he fought these incredible fighters that were in their 20s. So I don't think it really takes much away from the perspective. But, yes, legends do get bigger with age!
No...we know a little more about fighting than just looking it up on Wikipedia. This video was produced to support a Modern Army Combatives Class. I have no problem with constructive negative criticism, but the comments below show much about the level of your education and training. It really shows with poor grammar and spelling. That said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
another bullshit about martial arts made by some nerd who just looked up the wikipedia. as one said"there is nothing hard in fighting. u need to do just two things: hit and dont get hit". the reason why ppl train all their lives are because of obtaining the ability to do these two things.
Whoever made this video have NO IDEA about martial arts. Martial Arts can have many origins. It's basically bare fist fighting that evolve into different forms. No one invented bare fist fighting. It's just human nature. Many culture developed 'martial arts', not just one. There are many points of origin because fighting and fighting technique is a universal human endeavor.
that video its ttally wrong who made it do not know nothing about martial arts, there is a diferences betwen martial arts and fighting systems, martial arts train mind spirity and body and came from the bodhidarma teachings before that there was just forms of fight.
it comes from your inner self........ the wind of faith that protects with fear and anger but peaceful to realize your talent. weather you are born in it or it finds your in your dreams and fantasy - my definition of martial arts Golden Eye drops
And let me tell you, take away the crazy tight hand wraps and gloves and rules, Karate guys will probably be the only ones throwing closed fist punches without breaking their hands... American Karate has killed Karate, but lots of schools in Japan and Okinawa are still good. Kyokushinkai and Shotokan fights usually end in KO. So you can't say they suck at fighting...
@GuamKomudo I'm glad someone is looking out for Karate. My dojo is thankfully very traditional (Shotokan KUGB) I have excellent senseis who are always teaching with real-world applicaftions in mind rather than focusing on getting their students to competition. I can't stand the Westernised Karate that we are surrounded with.
@GuamKomudo You are giving away too many secrets man lol. As long as we know it's effective, we have nothing to prove to anyone. Actually, it's better that way I think. Real chinese kungfu and karate are still a secret fighting art. That's what is so special about them. It hasn't sold out to sports fighting and mc dojos.
@HSSDamian but wushu doesnt have fighiting and its the last thing you wanna use in a fight coz its useless rite so how did u fare? so its all up to ur kickboxing to help you man
@HSSDamian yea but does wushu teached you to fight ,almost ALL people i talk to who learn wushu says its not used for fighting, more performance art. But they say that the forms have abit of applicaitons and benefits and dats all nothing more pratical it can get. But yea who cares if the moves lok ugly or shit, most importantly is that you can defend urself and use it to prevent you form getting hurt rather than doing those wushu fancy anf flashy moves that can get you killed. Thx bro see ou
@MechPhantom Wushu IS for performance but that doesn't mean that It cannot be used in a fight.
I use it against people who do not do martial arts and find it very effective, Kickboxing is more effective but I'll only use that if my opponent is skilled.
@HSSDamian yea its better to use it on peaople that cant fight, but if someone who can fight, basically wushu is very useless, but yea both are good of course,if only wushu is more combat oriented ,not soo much performacne *sigh*
@HSSDamian yea but wushu alone pls never EVER use it in a fight XD u can get killed and cost ur life for it.I know it very good looking and pretty to watch a wushu performance but dont rely on it too mcuh,ALL those moves and flips and fancy stuff doesnt have ANY martial value and applications. So yea practice more on ur kickboxing for ur own self defense and safety

wow nice way to not mention ad santel, a catch wrestler who defeated a 5th degree black belt judo master and several of his students....sorry but this vid is very bias.
this is a good video i like how they said its in the pyramids stick fighting an sicle fighting is also in the pyramids so is a type of eastern medicine with dolls but this should be called how karate came to america kinda bias everyone knows scholars came during the tang an grabbed as much knowledge they could took it back to japan an did what they wanted with it
To say that a karate or tkd can't fight is just wrong. Simple fact of the MMA is that you are limited if you train in one style. Once grappling takes place most stand up arts are like a fish out of water. They don't know what to do.
What would happen if they told helio that he could only punch and kick and had to defend against muliple people? Nobody gave him that challenge I guess. Because I once saw in a vid he said anyone can kick and punch. In all of his fights, he didn't.
Traditional karate school will teach throws and ground fighting. Karate in it's original form was a "mixed martial art" A fusion of jujitsu, kung fu, and Te( native okinawain martial arts) and most likely other styles from the main land. Just now there is a strong focus on Karate as sport where grappling is not as important. Old school point matches allowed for throws and take downs, ect, but points were only awarded for strikes.
Good point, it is also well known that most boxing pre-queensbury rules included locks throws knees kicks & also boxing punches (there are only 6 - 8) when combined with the knife are an effective knife system (hence their use in the British army of the time) Also most boxing gyms masters where Greco-Roman wrestlers who taught boxing as part of a step towards that wrestling art. Now the Romans had pankration which is much like jujitsu & boxing it pre-dates Kung-fu so maybe MA started in west.
According to the famed Karate Grandmaster Masutatsu Oyama in his book "Advanced Karate" on pg. 13 "The oldest known records concerning combat techniques, hieroglyphic scrolls from Egyptian tombs, dating back as far as 4000 B.C."
Combatives training these days falls into three basic camps: MAC-P, LINES, and Everything else.
Nothing wrong with LINES IMO, some very good training. However, it did not met the needs of the Army. Training must be sustainable, replicable, obtainable, and measurable. LINES does not meet the criteria when you are looking at an Army wide, lowest level implementation.
MACP was designed with these things in mind. Bottomline, MACP is successful because soldiers are doing it.
Matt Larsen wrote the script, but the voice is someone else. Don't get too wrapped around the axle on that arm bar, it is simply a drill that is taught to level I students to get them to understand very basic concepts. Thanks for the comments.
That was an excellent history of MMA, I'm guessing that was Matt Larsen as the narrator. As for that armbar, I would say that might work. A lot of mistakes I make when armbarring is not to get close enough to the shoulder. Its interesting to see that guy be so far away from the shoulder with his thighs but still able to complete it by using a shin. Don't put anything down until you try it, and I'll be trying that one next time I see an opportunity.
The video excerpts are from a Army Combatives Level I course teaching novices arm bars. What you are watching is a teaching methodology designed to teach the principles...not necessarily how you would actually pull one off at full speed.
I got no idea, I am a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I have never seen anything that stupid looking. I don't think anyone armbars like that, except for that guy who probably got it wrong.
I recognize the clip, its originally from the "Fight Science" documentary on discovery. The guy doing the arm-bar is some kung fu/xma guy who doesn't have anything to do with MACP.
judo and kung fu san soo are the only effective asian martial arts the rest are crap and the europeans styles such as pankration, comhrac bas, kampfringen, lutta corsa, and systema as well as the native american fighting styles are the best styles to follow

It's unlikely that the actual weight difference between Helio and either Kimura or Santana was anywhere near 80 pounds. Legends get bigger with age.
