Michelle's technique was truly second to none and her consistency was unparalleled. Not taking anything away from any of the top skaters today, but there just isn't anyone on the ladies scene that has that timeless quality that Michelle (and to some extent, Sasha) had/has. I think it'll be a long time before we see a new star who's going to have any staying power.

You can even find footage of them skating together on YouTube. Since she spent a lot of time with him, she would know his body line better than anyone else, and I agree with her.
Sigh...if only it was the year 2000 in figure skating with young and talented Sasha coming into the world of competition. There would be so much more to look forward to compared to the current crop of skaters.
I am a huge fan of Michelle Kwan - for her longevity and elegance and unbelievable performances - however, I do agree that Sasha should have won this competition. But I don't think MK was sneering, maybe just a little concerned and very interested in Sasha's talent. And knowing she needs to do her best. It's not MK's fault if the judges held her up. Sasha would have been held up in later years if she did not always fall apart.

It's almost difficult for me to watch figure skating compretitions without her after watching her through the years. All other skaters' artistry pales in comparison. We'll never see another like her.

Watch her 2004 Tosca or 1998 nationals SP and LP. :P I still havent seen any programmes which strike you as hard as those ones. I like sasha though. Beautiful SP this one!

Michelle never liked it when some new young skater dared to challenge her. I remember her look backstage just the year before in the LP when Naomi Nari Nam had the crowd on their feet and almost beat Kwan. Michelle didn't like it one bit.

Thank you for posting this-so poignant to see tiny Sasha. Wow-after watching Sasha's always beautiful programs at 2010 Nationals and then this-her speed! She's flying around that ice! Greater flexibility of course-one tends to lose that as one ages although Sasha is still pretty damn flexy! She grew even more beautiful, and expressive with each passing year. Kudos Sasha on your comeback. Thanks for the memories and the joy of seeing you again in competition! :)
Sasha should not have won the gold, Her sort program was very beautiful as always but she lacks the technique & experience that Michelle has, In the LP she too "Stumbled and Bumbled" she fell on a jump 4got which 1 doubled footed a landing and her spins lack centering, Michelles' spiral sequence changes edges, Sasha does not. Michelle's performance is flawless in the LP. And she brings elagance & Passion 2 the ice, Sasaha over the years has improved much but her performance is never consistance!
Sasha so should have won this competition...taken the GOLD but gee how gracious is the look on kwan's face..oh my..how gracious...NOT! kwan has the gold but Sasha earned it. Yet another rip off for Sasha ..her turn ...and given title to kwan. Sasha has every right to hold her head high and is a beautiful young woman, skater, athlete and role model! I just saw her on project runway and she is just as lovely as ever.

Well they must be clueless, because Kwan won the competition, not Cohen. I also made it obvious that the pissed off look came from Kwan at 3:41. This is a beautiful SP! I think it's my favorite of her short programs. The variation in the spirals was really refreshing and they were all beautiful! Why doesn't anyone else do that many with such a marked difference between them?
well, we all know that kwan always got favored for whatever reason and that time after time the judges were not in sasha's corner, sasha is just such a virtuosic skater, comparing kwan and cohen in the same breath is just ridiculous
well in 2000 Sasha was not old enough to go to worlds so alowing her to win would not send a good message to the world compitition, let them know we are not sending our best
The judges should be ashamed with the way they treated Sasha in those nationals! Let's compare: In the SP, Michelle Kwan landed a 2A, a 3Lz-2T combination and FELL in a 3T, while Sasha landed a 2A, a 3Lz-2T comb. and a 3F (a harder jump that the 3T Kwan attempted!). Also, Sasha's spins were far superior as compared with those of Michelle's (as they have always been in fact!!) and the overall quality and energy of her SP was superior as well.
Later, in the LP, Sasha fell once (in a 3T) as well as Michelle (in a 3L), and although Kwan did six triples and Sasha 5, Cohen's spirals, spins, energy and artistry were breathtaking!!!
Even Dick Button said that the marks the judges gave Sasha in the LP for technical merit and presentation were completely unfair (and the crowd seemed to agree with that)!!! A 5.4 for T.M. and 5.6 for presentation, my god!!! Were they blindfolded, bought or what???
I don`t have anything against Michelle Kwan, who is a great skater too, but the truth is that Sasha deserved to be the 2000 National Champion. A total injustice!!!! Favoritism in the worst way!!!!

Have you noticed how the audience and the judges had been under Kwan's spell since 1996? I sure don't understand why, and how that happened, but no skater has had a chance competing against Michelle with those judges, no matter how better she was (not only Sasha). Despite Sasha's falls, all the elements and difficulties that she adds to her programs are unmatchable! She's just the greatest!

@rosewithoutathorn - Sasha had a habit of making 1 or 2 jump mistakes in BIG important competitions. Plus, her landings were often wobbly, even in this exquisite short program her landings were a bit shaky. Everything else in between though was first rate.

@rosewithoutathorn well said. just because you don't win the worlds or olympics doesn't mean you're a bad skater. sasha is one of the greatest of all time, mainly because of her exquisite skating and artistry; this performance proves just that. i can watch her stunning skating all day and she never ceases to take my breath away. no skater will ever have her perfection, lines, grace, or overall incredibleness. she is my ABSOLUTE favorite skater ever

3:41 She looks PISSED. She went on to have a lackluster performance in the long, by HER standards at least, but ended up winning by very little. However two months later at worlds she blew everyone out of the water. Something should be said for her perseverance.

Well they must be clueless, because Kwan won the competition, not Cohen. I also made it obvious that the pissed off look came from Kwan at 3:41. Perhaps these are Cohen fans that are giving me thumbs down, but Kwan fans for saying she has a lackluster performance...well guess what, she did. A month or two later she had a KICK ass performance at Worlds, but here she was not so good.

Don't take my previous comment so seriously. I was being facetious. No, we don't know what Michelle was thinking, but it's fun to speculate. Yes, they were both great skaters, but it's impossible for any of us to have known at the time that this wonderfully talented skater would never live up to her potential. I can't imagine a great and dominant competitor such as Michelle saw that performance and didn't worry that perhaps a future long-time rival had emerged. Just a thought. :)

I also think you have it a little backwards. Michelle has nine national titles, five world titles, and two olympic medals. Sasha has one national title, NO world titles, and one olympic medal. Hmmmm...

i love her step sequence! ot's so fast and jumpy. Her spins arent quite as good, they travel quite a bit more than they do when she is older, but has anyone else noticed that her jumps seem so much more consistant at this age?

You ARE entitled to your own opinion and I respect that but please just let us watch Sasha and Michelle in peace. They are two wonderful skaters and I enjoy to watch them both. Yeah, they zoom in on her father at one point. He's the man holding the 6.0 signs. Her mother and sister are there as well, I think, off to the side, but I'm not sure.

This is a beautiful SP! I think it's my favorite of her short programs. The variation in the spirals was really refreshing and they were all beautiful! Why doesn't anyone else do that many with such a marked difference between them?

well, we all know that kwan always got favored for whatever reason and that time after time the judges were not in sasha's corner, sasha is just such a virtuosic skater, comparing kwan and cohen in the same breath is just ridiculous

well in 2000 Sasha was not old enough to go to worlds so alowing her to win would not send a good message to the world compitition, let them know we are not sending our best

The judges should be ashamed with the way they treated Sasha in those nationals! Let's compare: In the SP, Michelle Kwan landed a 2A, a 3Lz-2T combination and FELL in a 3T, while Sasha landed a 2A, a 3Lz-2T comb. and a 3F (a harder jump that the 3T Kwan attempted!). Also, Sasha's spins were far superior as compared with those of Michelle's (as they have always been in fact!!) and the overall quality and energy of her SP was superior as well.

Later, in the LP, Sasha fell once (in a 3T) as well as Michelle (in a 3L), and although Kwan did six triples and Sasha 5, Cohen's spirals, spins, energy and artistry were breathtaking!!!

Even Dick Button said that the marks the judges gave Sasha in the LP for technical merit and presentation were completely unfair (and the crowd seemed to agree with that)!!! A 5.4 for T.M. and 5.6 for presentation, my god!!! Were they blindfolded, bought or what???
I don`t have anything against Michelle Kwan, who is a great skater too, but the truth is that Sasha deserved to be the 2000 National Champion. A total injustice!!!! Favoritism in the worst way!!!!

Have you noticed how the audience and the judges had been under Kwan's spell since 1996? I sure don't understand why, and how that happened, but no skater has had a chance competing against Michelle with those judges, no matter how better she was (not only Sasha). Despite Sasha's falls, all the elements and difficulties that she adds to her programs are unmatchable! She's just the greatest!
