Same way I'm doin it I have xp in this video. And yes u can do it on the first generation. Just make sure you have 2.2.1

You have to install it. After you install look for it in the start menu. Or if you can save it to your desktop so you can find it faster. But right click it go to properties then in the tabs go to compatibility. Look down a box and make it compatibale to windows xp sp2. Then click apply and then your done.

No you won't lose your memory. You will lose dogs and stuff but all you have to do is sync back with iTunes

Yes go back to the computer you used to sync your music. And set up as new iPod and sync as new iPod. It will put everything back in there.
