I heard Texas has their own OBDII emissions checks, though. Having been in Cali a few months and done my first emissions check, I can say I haven't had to deal with any more emissions nonsense (yet...). It seems like there are ways around this racket in CA too but it's complicated and often costly if you have a very obvious non-stock engine. I think it's probably more of a "wrong place at the wrong time" sort of thing. I think if you're low-key and don't drive like a nut, you're probably ok.
