I played the cassette of the answering machine back in a Fostex 280 multitrack deck (best 4track cassette deck ever), a Yamaha 2020 was the compressor, the noisegate was from Ashley.

You can tell it's a vocoder and not a computer since one can hear the persons lips and tongue smacking.
