This clip isn't from the DVD's that come with the Mel Bay instructional books called the Tomas Cruz Conga Method. There are three books that each come with the dvd. The book has written notations showing how to play each beat, but the book says that watching the dvds and getting a feel for the beats and their sounds is much more important that learning the beats based on the notations in the book. So, they basically say to watch the dvds that come with the books.
Is this a section of his dvd. Anyone no what his 'method' of instruction is? Some teachers use written notation-does he? Been thinking re buying his dvds but concerned about the demonstration being too fast and no notation offered. ie symbols not notes. Thanks
This is not from the Books and DVD. In the book he uses musical notation and on the DVD he builds up the exercises and rhythms slowly stroke by stroke. Just get it with no hesitation, you will not be disappointed
thanks for this-i have been using the DVD instructional for beginners called conga drumming -jorge bermudez to accompany the book/cd -conga drumming-by dworsky and sansby-wish id bought these first. I personally think they are fantastic for beginners -so user friendly.
I have loaned Tomasito's books from library and his teachingmedhod, step by step is very effective and it has helped me a lot. So, anyone who wants to learn some basic things how to play conga, should buy his books :) I highly recommend.
Unbelievable, Tomas posts an incredible breakdown of how to play some of these rythms and guys start talking jive, obviously Tomas can play in any situation, and this is a very well thought out lesson, Give Thanks.
This pattern is just for one tiny section of a song nothing more. Basics got nothing to do with it. People learning these things from great players like Tomasito make the mistake of thinking this is a pattern that can be repeated over and over, but it originally was written for one of Paulito's song. It shouldn't be forced to fit into anther already written song but should be used as an inspiration on what can be done.
Te vas a reir cantidad
i mean, what he is playing is fine, great conguero. but it is just the basic and can be used for almost all styles in son , salsa etc. if u wanna check out the real deep timba-grooves i would recomment to see some charange habanera clips. there is a nice one here also from armadito y su mecanica in a pretty good quality.good luck
With repect, the point is video is showing a basic Timba pattern as a mini lesson, there is enough virtuoso stuff on utube already. Tomasito is a respected Timba artist having played with Paulito FG, Manolin etc there are vids of him going all out but you cant learn much from that.
I beg to differ. This is not a basic pattern and would be challenging to play to salsa. Yes, there are similarities, but the shifts are what make Timba what it is, and it is not salsa.

I took you suggestion and watched some charanga habanera. Great stuff, but you can't "tease out" the drum pattern.

It's about the feel and syncopation that differentiates it from son along with the rest of the rythm section.
