@illdiablo80 I agree with your first sentence. But why dis on Mr Sprinpteen? Think about it, he wrote this song and inspired Morrello to make such a badass solo... Lay off.
@lcdtm9901 A mí me encanta la versión de RATM, me parece mejor que la original. pero lo dicho, la original es de Bruce. Disfruta de este espectáculo: ver a Morello y Springsteen juntos muy pocos lo pueden decir...
I was there both nights. I also saw them a few weeks earlier in Portland Oregon. It was awesome. I have seen Pink Floyd in 77, Stones in 75, Led Zeppelin in 75, Moody Blues,Yanni, Jethro Tull, ELP, Yes, U2 and at least 50 others. I have never in my life seen a crowd response like at the Honda Center those two nights for this song. Awesome!!!
Its a great song- personally like Bosses studio cut- Please watch / read John Steinbacks "The Grapes Of Wrath" for some background a favorite of Woody Guthrie- even named a son Joady. PS- Toms also a fine artist
i think tom is good but some of his solo stuff at the end did not work here, all the whammy stuff he could have left out and just played the really cool stuff he was doing, but then he has to do his turntable scratching stuff, creative? you bet called for in this tune? no
The lyrics and everything are great but not to troll because normally this song is the best but the voices of Tom and Bruce don't exactly mix well, and the solo by Morello, dear god, was so great but didn't fit the song at all. But it is still a great song.
Not the ghost of Tom Morello. He will live forever. He absolutely rocked that tune. He is rapping with the guitar after the 7 mark. Nothing has sounded this awesome since Jimi's cover of All Along the Watchtower.
This song was released in 1995 ... there was an understanding of a New World Order at that time. If you don't know the lyrics, you should look them up... they're amazing, and speak to what being a true American is really about... We all need Tom Joad right now.
This song nearly brought me to tears one night while I was working I was listening to it. The full magnitude of the song hit me. Everyone out there is someone's son someone's precious little baby. Every terrorist, every drug addict, every homeless person. We need to change society's mentality. It's not republican or democrat, christian or atheist. We are all humans all equally lost in this mess known as existence. We could be so great but humanity is squandereding its potential.
I saw this in one of the theaters in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with my family and all I can say is wow. My older brother and I know Morrello pretty well but my dad and younger brother didn't know anything about him until they saw this performance and my dad can't stop talking about him. Just goes to show how underrated some amazing artists like Morrello are through past and current rock.
He doesn't get put up there with other guitarists we hear about all the time (Eddie Van Halen, Dimebag, Hendrix) because he is more of an effect driven player, then a grit to the neck axeman, I think he is better than most if not one of the best. The Edge has the same problem. Guys that use mostly effects or are sound oriented get shit on by the guitar community. They're both fucking amazing.
In my humble opinion, this plus Bruce and John Fogerty was the best music of the whole how many hours it ws 25th ann of the rock and roll hall of fame, powerful, energetic, moving....Tom Morello is very severly underrated...from rage against the machine..audioslave..night watchman...he is just aweome!! p.s..to you whiners...so what he gets to make a living doing what he does, I rather pay to listen to him then most of the crap thats played on the radio!
@fuzzman1000 I think the support's great. Better than being ignorant of struggling everyday Americans. I'll be honest. I'm very lucky as my family is stable, I have healthcare, I'm grateful for a college education etc. I mean I'm not rich but I get by alright. That doesn't mean I'm not angry about all the other millions of Americans who don't even have the basic rights they deserve. Solidarity my brother/sister :)
What I love about this song is how two generations of musicians play in harmony. Springsteen with his old type muddy sounding guitar. Morelli with the crystal clear Ibanez sound. Together they play this song like one. :)
The ghost of Tom Joad is haunting Wall St... Occupy Wall Street! We are the 99%! YOU are the 99%. We're fighting to be free from corporate greed run amok and their government accomplices. The ghost of Tom Joad is with us. Will you be?
No words to describe this duet! If the lyrics, and the fictional character asociated with are of an imense beauty, the music here performed lives up to the lyrics! I am overwhelmed!
is this the original video that was always it before it became VEVO, I recall a longer solo after bruce sings and before tom starts and the video doesn't seem to match up, it fades briefly after bruce finishes that first verse then tom starts. Who is playing the guitar there? What's being played doesn't sync with either tom or bruce.
Springsteen (Fantastic musician) wrote this as a tribute to JOHN STEINBECK? The Grapes of Wrath is a novel published in 1939 and written by John Steinbeck, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. The Grapes of Wrath is frequently read in American high school and college literature classes due to its historical context and enduring legacy. A celebrated Hollywood film version, starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford, was made in 1940.
@PeteBaldwin thats somewhat of a paradox. I have to disagree with you. Hes never been underrated, as long as I can remember hes been revered as one the greats right next to henrdrix, dimebag, stevie ray voughn, eddie van halen, slash, etc.. hes been in the guitar hero video game series, a compliment and honor in itself. he reinvented our modern concepts of guitar and effects pedals. hes been on the cover of numerous magazines and sold out show after show. underrated?! pfff
@yanksbeatbosox the point i was making is that I disagreed that morello is underrated. if he were so underrated how could he be featured in the guitar hero series? In every magazine or article i have ever read, from day 1 hes been mentioned and credited for reinventing the guitar with the likes of eddie van halen, dimebag, etc.. hes never been underrated. look at their album sales! both RATM and audioslave.. its speeks for itself.
@faqyaself I dont think album sales really determine if a musician is underrated or not. He is not underrated I agree. A guitarist I would consider very underrated is J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. That being said the popularity of a band can help in a musician being well known or not, but I don't think that is the same as him being overrated or underrated.
I don't often comment on You Tube but The Ghost of Tom Joad , Jungleland and Thunder Road must be some of the finest lyrical songs that have ever been written. A true testament to the brilliance of Mr Bruce Springsteen.

I just saw Tom perform this song in NYC@The City Winery! The HBO 25th HOF concert was the 1st time I had ever heard of Tom Morello after Bruce introduced him and then after I watched their performance, I was so amazed with Tom, I had to research him and find out who this amazing musician was. I thought he was new. And then I got his CD, One Man Revolution, I knew that I would see him Live one day, and I did on 9-1-2011. And I was on stage with him! I uploaded 3 video's from that concert to UTube
This a great video. Some people play the guitar and others "are" the guitar. Morello is one of those people. Garcia, Clapton, Page and Hendrix were/are like that also.

I saw this song performed by Springsteen and Joad for the first time on the Seeger BD special -- I was awestruck! The song is phenom and the performance of another world . . .
So many amazing finds on u tube.. I don't really like Bruce usually, BUT FUCK ME !!! Nevr even heard of Morello before , but like I said , FUCK ME !!!
@longjonwhite That's a sign that you must go watch more amazing Bruce Springsteen live videos on the 'Tube. I recommend 'Youngstown' from NYC 2001 next.
oh my god i so love this song!! go on bruce!!! and well what can i say about tom, fucking awesome!! shivers down the spine, every time. sorry but one of my all time favs, nothing as yet has beat this!
@Mari, to understand the meaning of this song would be helped by reading Steinbeck's book, The Grapes of Wrath upon which this song is based. In short, it's about the poor treatment that the Oakies and the Arkies etc. faced when they travelled to the central valley of California in search of work after the devestation from the dust bowl.
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck me, dude. I love this video!
When I heard the first notes of Tom Joad I thought it might be time for a bathroom break - there's always at least one (Factory/Mansion etc.). Man, I am glad I didn't leave. By the end everybody around me was shaking their heads. We knew we'd seen something unbelievable, even by Bruce's high standards. Next song played was Devil's Arcade. Talk about bring the mood down - tells me Bruce had no idea what Morello had in store! Interestingly, I didn't think Night 2's version was quite as strong.
this video is gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooD
I HAVE A TEAR IN MY EYES AND A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERYTIME I WATCH THIS, GETS ME EVERYTIME, JUST SEEING THE PASSION IN THERE WORK, AND ON THERE FACES, TWO AMAZING MUSICIANS WORKING TOGETHER,IN HARMONY,EXCELLANT,BRUCE IS FACE IS A PICTURE!!!
I was there both nights. I had the feeling that the first night Bruce was as shocked as anyone there at the guitar solo. It was great, they also played "Trapped" the first night. We just watched them in Portland and drove to Orange County to see them two more times. 2008 was a great year.

This a great video. Some people play the guitar and others "are" the guitar. Morello is one of those people. Garcia, Clapton, Page and Hendrix were/are like that also.

Bruce played a solo! OMG, that's awesome!

Tom's perfomance here was great; his performance at the HOF concert on the same song was even greater and more epic. Check that one out.

I was there both nights. I had the feeling that the first night Bruce was as shocked as anyone there at the guitar solo. It was great, they also played "Trapped" the first night. We just watched them in Portland and drove to Orange County to see them two more times. 2008 was a great year.
