  • Its supposed to go all the way down to the upper chset or collar bone or shoulders. Thats a half rep. Not that good.

  • Maybe you should tell your clients to go lighter. The issue isn't the movement it's the weight they are using. If your arm can move there, then it's designed to do so. Strengthening the muscle in that area seems like a logical way to PREVENT injury, not cause it.

  • Any person that trains people for a living should know and understand how Impingement, Shear and Rotational forces are associated with different exercises and keep their clients safe and free from these.

  • Folks! Do not do these! I am a Sports and Fitness Therapist and for the last 21 years i have been fixing shoulder related issues that are brought on by such exercises like Barbell or Dumbbell shoulder presses.

    The obvious question is why you say??? Shoulder presses, upright rows and behind the head pull downs are all Impinging exercises or contraindicated to normal ranges of motion. Ask any Physiotherapist, Orthopedic surgeon or Physical Therapist....

  • Well she means well but one KEY issue here ....well two. A. Never do this exercise standing as your loading your spine. B. Never have the dumbbells meet at the top since you wanna avoid locking out the elbows and any GH joint and nerve imp. with the lockout.

  • I would like to add one thing: There is a benefit to training one arm at a time as well. What I do is simply clean a dumbbell to my shoulder with one hand in a single motion and press it overhead in military press fashion, often slowly gravitating towards a push press towards the end. Sometimes, I also see what I can push press for a maximum (I am able to push press 35 lbs overhead, my current goal in that regard is to be able to eventually push press 40 lbs overhead).

  • If you black out you should go and see a doctor. It sounds possible that you may have problems with your blood pressure, if raising your arms like this above your head is causing you to black out. Until you see a doctor, do no sets and reps of this exercise of any other exercise which puts your arms above your head.
