This is one of my favourite pieces to play. it's not the hardest ever, but it's so emotional that it makes me cry. And for whatever reason, the instructor sounds ridiculously like my teacher. It's uncanny. For this piece, it's important not to get lost in the technical 'music' and instead to drown yourself in the thoughts that Chopin must have been thinking as he wrote this. Think about the emotions going into the melody, not the searing pain in your fingers and the urge to rip up the score.
@AlbeitWeird I had a conductor like that one time that said, "Don't let your emotions get in the way of the music!" WTF???? Music is all about expressing your emotions.
not to sound cocky or anything but is this cellist really from curtis (said in the info section).
She should realize that this is chopin cello sonata. which means.. play the chopin way. hopefully she understood that she needs to play less mechanized and more emphatically
hahaha dont say that to her face i think shed burst into tears. intonation and tone is completely on but your tottally right she should definetly look a little deeper into how to play chopin
I agree...I didn't want to sound mean, but this is painfully robotic playing...I'm sure she is good at cranking out the notes, but where is the heart?
@tedgoh this is what masterclass does. her sound has a definite shape to it. maybe the flair isnt there in this but u have to hear the shape of her sound, its beautiful
Haha, hardcore musicians tends to speak incoherently, cos what they wanna express is beyond normal conservational english, so they speak very abstractly and end up sounding weird.
what a false generalization, they don't speak incoherently! language can't fully express the words of music but can only attempt to depict it metaphorically, if one can only comprehend what he said with his mouth but not what he said with his bow, then it's listener's lack of comprehendsive ability to grapse the inexpressable essense. It's the listen illiterate in the language of music, not him in english.
Perhaps I should have added " signs around the word incoherently and weird, because i did not intend to use these two words in the literal sense, or maybe i should have chose different wording all together
I have the utmost respect for this teacher and every other "hardcore musicians" you were misunderstanding my comment.
What's with all the stopping and starting, Mr. Hoffman? She hasn't played the entire piece yet, and you're picky about every little detail!

@thordrianee I ment her fysical appearance, not her playing..
She plays very nice, but not many can be compared with the few best of course..
I do like this video because I like watching masterclasses

Well, if you don´t understand what he says by "not finishing the actions" and all the rest, I guess it´s you who has a language problem...

thanks for clarifying, and excuse me if I misunderstood you, yet indeed it's very hard to find the right word to give music the justice.
