@StunningSteve The song's in the key of E Major, if that helps, most of the riffs are just going up the E Major scale. This song's not too hard to figure out if you sit down and work at it.
I find it surprising that many people don't pick up on how spiritual Raine's lyrics can be. I find that this song is about trying to connect with God and failing to do so., same with "Signs of Life." "Angels/Losing/Sleep" is about losing that faith. But the thing about faith, no matter how great or small, will find it's way back to you eventually. When Raine sings "and empty are these hands" I think is a complete reference to failing to connect.
I don't know if i'm into this new album that much. It usually takes me a couple playthroughs before i know, but it doesn't seem to invoke the same feelings that songs like are you sad and annie did
bro, this album is the shit. honestly, i think its on another level then all that shit. i been listening to them for over 10 years and i fuckin love this album. one
@xArtandMusic Annie is a fav of mine too. Very Underrated song for sure. Lots of original sounds in that one. OLP never reached that level since. Of course Mike Turner is gone so that says it all right.
Now from what i know music is based on your emotions and circumstances and the world around so no there is no return to what they "used" to be as thay have grown as people and will never be same again, I personally like this song but then i judge it by it's own merits and if you hadn't heard OLP before you would know this is good it's very good
as a canadian for 33 years growing up on their sound, before the u.s.a " picked " up on them, this is their best album to date .. any other opinions are incorrect.
Honestly the only time the USA ever picked up on them the most was Starseed, Clumsy, and Superman's Dead. After that, well Somwhere Out There Gained some, but certainly not as much as the former three
Mike and OLP was like a freak occurrence in my opinion, because if you listen to his projects like Crash Karma and Fair Ground, his guitar work sounds nothing like it did with OLP. And OLP sounds much different now than they did when he was in the band. Doesn't mean their stuff is bad, and personally, I enjoy all of their stuff just as much.
And to be on topic, this is by far my favorite song on the album. I think I can hear a little falsetto around 54 seconds.
Of course they're a different band! It'd be an insult to Mike if they just tried to be OLP with Mike. It's different and you don't have to like it, but it does have its merits. For me, personally, it's second after Happiness . . .
Yeah after Mike left their sound changed pretty drastically and not in a good way. For me Our Lady Peace was Raine, Jeremy, Duncan, and Mike....with Steve it's like they're a completely different band.
This album is definitely better than Healthy in Paranoid Times, but I still miss the sound they had on there original 4. To this day Happiness...is not a Fish that You can Catch is still there best album.
Thank god. This song alone makes up for healthy in paranoid times...this seems to be much more like the old OLP, but with a little bit more mellow/mature sound...
@kennygmang How am I being retarded because of a song I don't like. Your logic is retarded and maybe even non-existent. Not everybody likes the same thing someone else does. I clearly stated that I like their earlier stuff, you idiot. A difference of opinion is this, You like the song and I don't. That's a difference of opinion you chode.
I had read that this song is not about Mike Turner but about the seperation from the Bob Rock years.
The escape artist with 'expert skills' was Bob who came in and did his thing and now he is gone. the single line in the chorus ' empty are the hands' signifies that Bob had taken away what they had and who they were before. the line 'there's no turning back' is, apart from being a sigh of relief, a sign that the band have taken on a new direction. Yay!!!!
it was on a review forum and some said it was about Turner and others said that it was too negative to be about Turner and that it was about Bob. The fact that The End is where we begin also hinted at that was a sure sign for those peeps. And btw everyone gave great reviews too. Awesome album
I don't think they ever would... from what I read the split was amicable, and I would bet dollars to dimes that Maida and Turner are still in touch, especially since both took on more 'behind the scenes' music roles for the most part
Every time these lights go out I'm in this fire drill With blood shot eyes I stand on guard This room is quiet and still Was never one to lay any blame but the story's the same You're the ghost Empty are these hands You're the ghost There's no turning back No turning back
very time I think of you I feel the coldest chill I think about your great escape An artist with expert skills It's painful when you're not around But it's bound to change -Chorus- You're the ghost and empty are these hands You're the ghost There's no turning back No turning back
i dont get why all you did was save my life was the first single, i didnt really like it, but all of these songs (escape artist, paper moon etc.) are just excellent !
There are rumors on the OLP fansite that this song is actually about Mike Turner... the former guitarist and forming member of OLP. Keep it in mind while listening.

Wow OLP have really gone downhill. I love all of their releases up to Gravity...but their past couple of outings have disappointed me.

Another great Canadian band that never really got enough attention that i suggest OLP fans would like is "I Mother Earth".
Check it.

So true, I Mother Earth have such an "olp" sound. I feel lucky to live in Buffalo and be exposed to such great Canadian rock.

sxy, I have to agree. When I listen to this it's very easy and free but not really as emotional as Annie, for sure. That song was just intense.

this song was actually written way before they began this album, thats why it sounds so different. They played it live at a show i was at in 2004

Its not the best album that they've had - yet to get a copy of it, as I am in the UK.
It is not their best album, and poor by OLP standards - that is true, but it is still OLP - and so you have to love it!
Of course, when you have a couple of good first albums and great songs, its hard to live up to that reputation every time.
As with any soundgarden, pearl jam or OLP etc - their albums grow on you, you have to get in the mood,
so let it grow on you!
