some little known fact about the incident of 89: the root cause of discontent was the liberalization of China. 3 reasons: the shutting down of government own factories cause many to lose job. couple with the adoption of market pricing drove which inflation up cause much hardship. finally the relaxation of censorship in the liberalization campaign allow people to be more "expressive" and join protests.

wrong, the reason china reformed was cause Deng took his tour to the southeast asian countries and was convinced by Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore that communism did not work. China started reforms in 78, the protests in 89 was a product of high inflation in those years which caused urban wages to stagnate relative to rural wages, which caused discontent among the city dwellers. Which eventually spun off into a pro-democracy demonstration. And if Deng didn't crush it, China would've fell apart

when howard was treasurer interest rates were 22%. Aus is too small a country to influence global interest rate patterns. The best indicator is always the rates decided at The US Federal Reserve and then see the difference between them and australian rates.

I suppose you could have missed it - it is highly believable - if you believe anything John Howard says, that he transformed China's economy with one phone call :-) After all he also created a booming economy by single-handedly manifesting the Internet, discovering Moore's law and designing the 3G mobile phone network. Not to mention the webdesign industry that he spawned, which employs so many Australians - oh yes, he and Costello can take credit for that too! :-)

I saw the irony, but Rudds experience with Chinese is one of the reasons I want to vote for him. I like a leader who knows about events outside the border. Someone who is bilingual, (not that this makes you a good leader) and has lived overseas can deal with overseas issues more accurately.
