What about Stu Ungar ? 3 time ME champion,. or Ivey with 8 bracelets in twice shorter carerr then PH. Chan and 1987 & 1988 win and 198second place finisher.

absolutely right... and apart from that... everyone who critises hellmuth for calling here cant even spell the word "poker", you just gotta look at his stack, when you are in such a great position/lead and got an A you gotta make this call, because the other guy with that TINY stack is gonna go all in as soon as he has a "playable" hand like anything suited with a K, Q or J in it, otherwise the blinds would eat him up... The call here is a must!
That is tournament poker strategy. Phil had a massive chip lead. Plus, it is heads up so you need to loosen your starting hand requirements. Ace+anything should call to try to knock him out. Phil made the correct play.
If you are mean Phil, he was sitting on an Ace in a heads up situation and had his opponent WAY covered. It was only logical for him to call with A3 to try and win. Any ace is a playable hand heads up. Johhny Chan went all in with an A7 of spades against Hellmuth heads up. He lost, but my point is that any ace is good heads up at the 1989 main event. As for the guy with the A10 suited, he was lowstack and was holding a suited ace with a pretty good kicker. Of course he was shoving all in.

@mutzigmorzine no need to be so rude and abusive. no, you do not calls with "just about any hand" in that situation. you pick your moments in Heads Up. you do not give your opponent repeated opportunities to Double Up and get back into the match. I am actually excellent at Heads Up poker, so I know what I am talking about.

But I maintain my view, if your opponent has 3 big blinds, you have him absolutely dominated, you have to think he will shove with any hand, if you have an ace your in good position 80% of the time. You may be a good heads up player, but you are no Phil Hellmuth, nor am I, hence why we are commenting on this video.

Actually I find Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu some way better, cuz apart from their poker skills, they're also a lot nicer. Hellmuth is calm as long as the game goes as he planned. Make him lay down, call his bluff, gamble a little and he goes rage insulting everyone at the table. I mean, he's a great player and clearly he can make comments about other players' play, but jeez, not the way that he does.

@guy2j That's true, but I'd have to assume the guy was pushing with an ace or a low pair. Sure KQ suited is possible to, but I think what I said was more likely.
I'm not saying it was a bad play, just phil went into the hand knowing he was an underdog, and as far as underdog hands go I think low connectors would have been way better then A3.

absolutely right... and apart from that... everyone who critises hellmuth for calling here cant even spell the word "poker", you just gotta look at his stack, when you are in such a great position/lead and got an A you gotta make this call, because the other guy with that TINY stack is gonna go all in as soon as he has a "playable" hand like anything suited with a K, Q or J in it, otherwise the blinds would eat him up... The call here is a must!

That is tournament poker strategy. Phil had a massive chip lead. Plus, it is heads up so you need to loosen your starting hand requirements. Ace+anything should call to try to knock him out. Phil made the correct play.

If you are mean Phil, he was sitting on an Ace in a heads up situation and had his opponent WAY covered. It was only logical for him to call with A3 to try and win. Any ace is a playable hand heads up. Johhny Chan went all in with an A7 of spades against Hellmuth heads up. He lost, but my point is that any ace is good heads up at the 1989 main event. As for the guy with the A10 suited, he was lowstack and was holding a suited ace with a pretty good kicker. Of course he was shoving all in.

if he didnt' have such a mouth on him im sure he would be considered the best in the world. He was even the big winner one season on high stakes poker out of all those pros... So you cant deny his skill. He has a lot of nice tricky little plays he does that confuses players. Also puts players on tilt with his mouth haha.
