Cover bands are alot like those idiots that try to do the "don't try this at home" stuff. They know they aren't going to be as good, but yet think that they are better than the people that actually do it. Almost all of the big rock bands, or members thereof, got their start playing in cover bands. It's the first rung on the band performance ladder in every local bar circuit.

There's a difference between a cover band and a bar band. A cover band plays songs from one particular artist/band whereas a bar band plays a wide variety of music and that's where most musicians get their start.
