That's the C111 Developmental test car.

The diesel I5 that debuted in the W116 300SD, W123 240D and 300D were developed on the C111.

It broke 9 diesel and gas speed records.

It was also used to develop suspension designs used on the W116, W123, R107 and W126. The 5-way multilink rear setup on the W201 and W124 were products of evolution of such suspension designs. A really huge leap forward for Mercedes-Benz.
