The soon-to-be record points champions of England (Chelsea) who were a much better side you must admit. And then the Italian champions MIlan in the final.

As it was, the keeper took a quick free kick, and so the goal should've stood, you don't see free kicks being given for not being back 10 when quick free kicks are taken in the centre circle.

the opposition have to immediately retreat 10 yards if it's a free-kick. If they don't they can be booked. If Hutchison was adjudged to be ambling deliberately too slowly away he could have booked him. Of course the goal couldn't have stood.

As far as I can see, the player is walking across in front of the ball as the free-kick is taken. Of course this is intentional by the Everton player. Players are taught to be 'professional' like this.
My opinion: no goal. Free-kick retaken & booking.

Now, because it is a free kick, he needs to be at least 10 yards away, however when it is taken he is obviously less than 10 yards away which is why it was disallowed so it was the correct decision.

@steviepryke Unfortunately the referee, Graham Poll, who made the original mistake doesn't agree with you. He apologised the almost a decade later to Everton fans in his memoirs, and noted that the goal should in fact have stood after all. He did not feel that Hutchison was 'intentionally' obstructing - he is clearly walking away, not 'across' as you put it- and in any event, Poll blew for full-time (not an infringement) when there was still time remaining, which is why Everton were furious.

This 'best team in your history' wouldn't have won Europe anyway, they couldn't even retain the title without the distraction of the ECCC, which is more difficult to win. Everton couldn't win any of the replacement competitions against other English teams either, so God knows how they would have fared against the cream of Europe. Still, at least you have something to piss and moan about. Self pity city.

Re: self pity city, there is a tendency amongst Liverpudlians to feel sorry for themselves and blame their failings on other people, eg. Sheffield police, Howard Webb, another football club etc. Everton have had 50 years to win a European Cup, it's not Liverpool's fault you never have.

As for the ban, who knows what would've happened if it hadn't been imposed? It would've set off a completely different domino effect. And even if things had stayed the same, we won the league again in '87, so that was at least one other chance we would've had.
