I don't know exactly but I know from her bio on wikipedia it does say that at 4'11 and over 200 pounds she had died from complications of diabetes. But anyway I'm not sure.

Nell also lived a very closeted bisexual lifestyle. Nearing the time of her death, she had a female partner already. But despite her very personal background and such, Nell did lead a very interesting life ahead. The woman could dance and sing. Something that can never be accomplished in a plus size woman like Nell Carter. She was a rarity in that factor. God bless this woman.
