Justin Scharvona is the composer of these musics, with alien feeling and the unknow. Snes stills the empereor of all consoles because of it, he forged all nowadays elite groups
@johneymute Youre kidding right? If snes processor could do more... but a third person view who shift to first is already too much. The music was composed to work on dolby surrond thats why its only beats like. For a 16 bit from 94, thats very impressive.
Oh man I remember playing this as a kid. Unfortunately 3D was way beyond me back then so I quit after 10 minutes and never played it again. Looks like I missed out on a nice game and an awesome soundtrack.
Back in '94 I paid full price (~70 dollars US) for this games and I remember thinking that the soundtrack alone made it worth it. I still have that copy of the game, and this video makes me want to get out the old SNES and play this again for the awesome music.
@22greg48 Yeah it was. I couldn't crack the fourth mission because it was a bit too hard to drive the Landmaster(?) mode through the "race course". The Sonic Jet was my favorite mode but it took too much fuel! :D
The SNES wasn't really "capable" of this. These 3D games were almost 100% run by the FX chip, which was several degrees more powerful than the SNES processor. In fact when developing the chip, Argonaut employees considered the SNES as nothing more than a box to hold their chip.
wish I'd given this game more time back in the day. I did have it briefly BUT I think (oddly) it's lack of linearity put me off it all those years ago - something which ppl strive for in the video games of today. Not sure if Vortex can be accused of being ahead of it's time but it certainly:
1) was in touch with the gaming industries up and coming needs at that time &...
2) is quite the showcase for what the SNES was truly capable of
@CalebJimmy There is a wonderful internet page with all the classics from arcade games, sega and nintendo, including this game. Hundreds and hundreds of classic games. Just send me a message, and I can give you the link. :)
Shit I couldn't even get past the first boss of this without the game genie because I had no idea how to avoid it's attacks. I'm going to watch your video and see how you beat it.
Lol, I remember this. Couldn't remember the name though. I remember a level that looked very similair to Corneria from Star Fox. If only this surfaced on the Virtual Console.
@Drakulbites I believe the Super FX enhances RISC processors, and also, freaking Super FX emulation has been successful on PC and homebrew emulators for YEARS! You know Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars uses a SA-1 chip to enhance the game with extra detail that the SNES could not do alone, and they emulateed it just fine. This is just about commitment to doing it.
@Drakulbites You only have problems if you don't take one step at a time, and know your technicalities of the RISC architecture and the CPU processing.
man, I used to play this a lot back then. only completed it once without any cheats, and then used cheats later on to use the jet mode in stage 3, hahah. this game has such an awesome soundtrack. I managed to put all the songs on CD today; I am happy as hell. =D
Try it out in test mode. It shows you how to change into every part. You could do it by pressing the select button but it's much faster when you hit the right button combination to turn into what you desire. L + A, B, X, or Y changes you into things. R + Y or X chnges your weapons.
Train in practice mode and test mode before you play the game.
this looks better than the jaguar sadley

Just tried this game first time in 10 years. Sound is ok but the picture isn't showing :( This really has awesome music!

this game completely sucks despites all the help and info you get.
the controls are choppy & slooow, when you get attacked by enemy's(like from behind) it,s very hard to dodge & kill them without dying.
it,s hard to tell if you stand on or next an platform.
it,s easy to get disorientated cuzz there,re no textures on flours.
you can,t see objects from a distance.
colors & polygons are way tooo limmited making itms hard to distinguish.
even the music actualy get,s boring.

I liked this game, as well as StarWing. The guy who talks to you at the start looks like Shin from Un Squadron.

@Drakulbites We are at least expecting Star Fox and Stunt Race FX to surface on the Virtual Console, given they are Nintendo-made games.
Ketorulz 1 year ago
@Ketorulz It's unlikely. They have problems emulating the FX chip. That's why we haven't gotten Star Fox or even Yoshi's Island.

Yeah, there were 4 games made with the Super FX Chip.
Star Fox
Stunt Race FX
Vortex
Dirt Trax FX
UltraLuigi 4 years ago
correction, Doom as well as a couple others also used the Super FX chip, you just named those that used non-textured 3D graphics.
neogeon 4 years ago
This game was made by Argonaut Games, who also made Star Fox and Stunt Race FX (but not Dirt Trax FX, that was handled by Sculptured Software).
machriderx 4 years ago
Actually, DOOM and yoshi's island used the FX2 chip, the upgraded version of the first one.

To go on every stage of Vortex, use this password: CTGXF and you can choose a stage, even the last, Trantor!

I wasn't aware of that password but I already have every password for every stage since I beat the game. Thanks for the password anyways.
