i love that hes paying tribute to one of the greatest... and i also really loved how he didnt trey to make it his own, he kept it perfect the was it is<3.
This was just wonderful. The one thing I think Usher did, aside from getting the choreography down, was that he captured the same joy in Gene Kelly's performance. There's a certain warmth and glow Gene Kelly has, and it always brings a smile to face whenever I see this scene or here the song. Usher's performance evoked the same reaction.
I have no intention to criticise Usher. But his performance is no match with the original one by Gene Kelly. Usher's acts somehow are too exaggerated and apparently too hip-hop to me while the original is just perfectly natural.
Anyway, great thanks for Usher's work, considering it will be the 60th Anniversary of Singing in the Rain movie next year.
hey, hey, hey! Haters, quit talking! You ALL know that you couldn't do any better. Give the guy a break! You can't be mad at him because he is SUCCESSFUL in what he does, now can you? So shut up for once, listen, and be inspired. Maybe you'll learn how to enjoy things.
Definitely not as good as gene kelly, but he did an amazing job though trying to copy it, i like the way he sang it, he was trying to honor gene kelly and make it his own at the same time and gene kelly defiitely would have been proud of that
@babyfacedstar the reason he drug out his notes is because he is Usher thats the way he sings it wouldnt make sense for him to try and sing the song like gene kelly that wouldnt make him the great performer that he is... jus sayin
Usher Usher Usher... Dude, what a great tribute and "SPOT ON" to the original version by Gene Kelly (which i've seen numerous times)!! Great Job!! It's soo refreshing to see someone committed to their craft! I wanna sing in the rain now, but this Texas Heat wont allow it!! =)
Usher always comes across as a nice guy, not my kind of artist, but each to their own. This is good to see, an artist who cares about his industry enough to pay tribute to the greats.
Who hasn't felt the urge to do this at some point anyway, I did, I recommend it if your in a cheery enough mood.
2:33 ... UR in the glas =) exelent tribute , to all of u ! it is a tribute , not a challenge , nobody of all haters here cant dance and sing like this PERIOD
It just goes to show Gene Kelly was in a class of his own. The fact that Usher did this as a tribute is all that matters.....comparing them is unfair for Usher, and he himself would be the first to admit he isn't as good a dancer as Gene Kelly. Good effort.
I dont think Usher was trying to show off he could be as good as Gene Kelly. Hes paying a huge tribute to Gene Kelly because of how good he is and such an icon, thats all
@Torgueuere I was not aware that Usher was such a well-rounded dancer. Just yesterday, I attended a recital sponsored by an African-American owned dance studio, and was amazed to see that young people who were doing hip-hop dance were also doing ballet, tap, and modern dance. It's good to know that today's teens are still interested in different forms of dance. Not just because their parents paid for it, but they seemed to really enjoy developing their craft. Quite refreshing!
It's great to see he has such an appreciation of such a classic number. But while he probably has him beat vocally, Usher isn't half the dancer Gene Kelly was. Great tribute though!

@nautypup20 no...your ignornance leads you to believe this because your the one with the racist mentality...wake up every cop is not racist though i know you want them to be!
What makes Kelly's original even more amazing is the condition he filmed it in. During the whole 2-3 days it was filmed in he had a fever of 103 degrees.
This is a stunningly lovely tribute. A little slow, yeah, but it comes off more as a love song-nod to the original. Though I gotta say that Usher carries off a bit more of the Kelly-esque ease and flair with tap on stage after the video, hehe.
And I love that the cop in this looms more like an annoyed Batman than an admonishing parent.
I am a huge Gene Kelly fan, and Singing in the Rain is my favourite movie, and I think Usher ROCKED. He was awesome! And what a total complement to Gene Kelly! Thanks for posting.

This brings it to a new generation and allows them to see it through someone they know first, peaking their interest, and hopefully, broadening their horizons. Usher: Bravo.
@JtGorospilicious The film is depicted in the 30s, when the age of sound in films appeared, but it was made in the 50s, so DunkleWurzlen isn't wrong about that, since the cop would be a 30s cop.

@jesushateswood WOW! What a great point you made... until you had to make it about race... when will bigots like you stop using race as a crutch... the only person more racist than a white person who "uses" black people to make money are the weak minded pieces of trash like yourself who always have to use your race as a crutch!
I love Gene Kelly's more, but DAMN this is good! I was just thinking how amazing it would be if a man danced and sung in the rain in these days, and here it is! It's put a great modern spin on it.
