For all you people talking about the good old days, i guarantee that over half of you are under the age of 20 and just say these things to feel like special little snowflakes.
Film evolves, everything evolves. Films were limited to what the actors could do back then, but new technology has allowed for films to reach new heights. Sure this was a great musical, possibly among the best of old hollywood, but don't scorn new films just because you want to act like a hipster douchebag.
i recently started watching these old movies and i am looking for movies from fred astaire and gene kelly. not specifically together but with atleast one of them and i also like bing and donald.o connor
and that brings me to my question!
Who knows a good movie from them? is easter parade good or Roberta?
or the pirate?
I liked singing in the rain and i thought maybe the people here have suggestions
You all need to get over yourself and just enjoy the talent... whether they play the violins or not and whether they do the dance right or not, just enjoy it!
Gene kelly choreographed the entire film, so any dancing is done the way he wants it, so it cant be wrong! Its supposed to be a comedy piece... And is bloody well done... This was the 1950's.... no cgi, no silly technology, just pure talent...
So what if there are some mistakes... everyone is entitled to make a few every and again...
@TailsandDanie According to who? This is not really a silly comedy in the vein of the work of Will Ferrell, where things like this purposely happen. This is an elegant film where everything else is pretty well done. The fact that it is so noticeable that the actors are not playing their instruments is not made on purpose at all, it's just a flaw that takes people out of the film.
In reference to them not actually playing the violins. It's a bit. Supposed to be comical. Like when horrible horror movies have really fake looking blood squirting out of someone...it's a bit...it's comical. They aren't supposed to look like they are actually playing the violin....real vioins would not be able to be lowered like a yo-yo.
@CWalkowiak1 ummm, by one footed wings do you mean shuffles, cause i actually take three different types of tap and those just look like shuffles to me... sorry if i sound mean just stating my opinion
@CWalkowiak1 I loove Gene Kelly but funny enough, that's what I've always thought in the back of my mind as I watched this scene. Also, I don't know what the dance move is called but Kelly does the foot windmill thing at 1:44 wrong too. Still an amazing scene regardless.
@ArnyBoy while I agree that it IS noticeable that they're not actually playing the instruments...do you realize how hard that would be to do? Playing those instruments and still giving it 100% on the dance?
@gongjooyoo No one said they have to really play them, but it should at least seem like they are playing them. I can't apply your logic to any film. Imagine if you notice how terrible the CGI in The Mummy Returns is, and someone simply says "I agree that it is terrible, but do you realize how hard it would be to make some decent special fx?" That's simply no excuse. This is a great film, but it is bothersome to me whenever I don't believe that an actor is truly playing his instrument.
@ArnyBoy It's not an excuse, and you're talking about two different things. How do you get dancing to CGI...they're completely different (to my "logic"). And I'm pretty sure that neither Gene nor Donald know how to play the violin well, because if they did they probably would've done so...but then they might've sacrificed the level of difficulty for the dance, which is what this musical is known for...the dancing. I understand your point though, August Rush is a prime example of it.
@gongjooyoo I'm not talking about two different things. I'm talking about anything that takes you out of the illusion that what you are seeing is real people, instead of actors in a movie.
LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH. This movie is my childhood :)
Were they on wires during this dance?

look at today's array of shit films, so much technology and animation techniques and they still make massive mistakes...
Atleast in those days it was all real... real effort and hard work.
They dont make films like this anymore and its a damn shame, because they are with no doubt the best.
So get over it and just enjoy it! Gene kelly is/was an extremely talented man and his work is incredible.

@saffieyz He only had the fever during the Singin' in the Rain number...not the whole film:)

I scream when I watch this, beacue every little detail about this bit is so excrutiatingly perfect!

I love this, but it does make me sad that Gene Kelly is faking the one footed wings at 1:13. Donald O'Connor is working it though!!!

As much as I like this movie, I hate it when the fact that the actors are not actually playing their instruments is that noticeable.
