I work in a hump yard and am always aware of the possibility of a derailment. Questions......why are they so close to the cut of cars, why are they humping multi-car cuts, we pull the pins on single cars or it beats the crap out of the retarders, why don't they have track circuits to tell them they are foul of that switch. I hope the three workers and the yardmaster had to pee in the little cups.

@guitarguy940 I work for the railway and this is a hump yard... you push cars off the top of a hill 'hump' and someone controls the switches from a tower... there are retarder breaks in the tracks that slow and stop the cars... the person who was pushing the cars over the 'hump' pushed to fast or they were sent into the wrong track, that's my guess anyways

@guitarguy940 Happens all the time. Very common. Under "normal" operations they are cut loose at a slow speed and roll until they couple into another car. In yards like this one there are actually braking devices (retarders) that can also slow down the movements.

@hallcert - It looks fast forward because it's a security cam type setup. Special recorder that makes a normal tape last 24 hours by snapping a frame every second or longer. I've installed and monitored them. They have them there on the towers like that so they DO have a record of just what happened (insurance; training).
