This song is the perfect example of how if you weren't with a big record label in 1979, you're song...no matter how good...would not get the radio play needed to make it a hit. Leavin L.A. was #71 in the US and #57 in Canada because Paul Janz was an unknown born in a small Canadian town and raised in a small Swiss village.
If this song had been released in the internet age, it would have been a top 10 hit. I just wish a singer from today would re-make this song. It would be a smash hit.
I have this album but I,m an old guy. I can,t even remember the tear that it came out, I,ll guess 79 but I,m not certain, must be the alzheimers! An incredible Canadian band that never got there props. Paul Janz had a few songs that made up here but never again got the international airplay that Leaving La did. This really high end song with amazing production and mixing, it could stand up against almost anything of the same period.
Ok, you have just ended a 30 year search for this song. As embarassing as it is to say, I was a DJ from 75 to 86 and was unable to remember the name of this song. I could only remember snipets of the words, Thank you Sound Hound for getting me from bits and pieces to the name of the song. You link was number one in the listing for this song, and that is how I found you.
@gortk Yours and all comments appreciated. It was very strange how I happened to have the radio on back in 2001 when I was visiting and this song floated out. How lucky and wonderful to find it again, it has the same effect on me too....
I liked this song from day one. Still one of my all-time favorites. Did you know that there is a difference between the album version and the U.S. 45 release? It is subtle and both are excellent.
Thanks again for all who have left comments on this song.
Since I originally posted this another upload of better quality has become available (58sunnysky). This is vinyl - so I appreciate that you guys who posted a message chose me, with all the background noise ! No problem with you 58ss I should add - you did a great job !
The main thing is that between us, a wonderful song is preserved for everyone to enjoy again.
I'm a UK based actor/singer and I was very lucky to see Deliverance at Greenbelt in 1980 (I think) They were awesome. I bought the album "Tightrope" on VINYL and still treasure it in my collection. Leaving LA is my favourite track on the album, although they are all brilliant .
I have searched far and wide for this song (one hit wonder) and finally U tube has it, the quality might not be perfect but who cares I am so happy to be able to hear it again! I wish this band had stayed together and put out more but this is fantastic for us who have waited a long time to hear it again and bring on the memories! Flying away leaving LA!!
Wow...this takes me back to when life was simpler!!! I really liked this song when it came out and it is so great to hear it again!! Thank you for posting it!!!
OMG!!! YEEEEARS and YEEEEEARS looking for it and wondering if had the right name!!! (A guy from the radio station told me once, but I didnt speak English by then) THAAAAANKS!!!!
could you tell me where you got this song? i've been looking everywhere for it, and i want to give it to my dad for christmas because he really wants it. thanks
I feel honoured that you would comment on this Natalie; what a nice connection !
It would be great if you could post the lyrics since a number of people have wondered what they were - and any background to the song if you know it. Either way thanks to your Dad for giving us such a wonderful piece of music - and we will all check out "Sweeter Than Wine"
Wow! today is one of the best days of my life, i thought i will never hear these song ever, I was Living in Guatemala w/ my 3 sisters Listening to" La Metro Stereo" best radio in Guatemala , I Love it, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you I thought this song was lost forever...had a hard time finding it but here it is great summer evening song sitting by your sweetie holding hands have a great summer everyone!

Thanks to all who left comments - I really appreciate them; I am just pleased to share an old but great song with others like me who seek but cannot find. I also looked for a CD but no luck. By the way, I was living in Toronto when I first heard it and again on my return (where I pulled over) but I thought pictures of Toronto would look odd as a backdrop for a song about LA !
Heard this song when I was in Calgary,Alberta in 1980. I've been trying to find this song for years, was beginning to wonder if I remembered the title of the song and the artist..I DID! Thank you so much for posting
The chorus (0:56 - 1:14) is FANTASTIC. It's such a good hook, I think it would have been a great intro by having the chorus kick in at the 0:15 second mark.
Beautiful song, full of memories.

Hi All,
I'm a UK based actor/singer and I was very lucky to see Deliverance at Greenbelt in 1980 (I think) They were awesome. I bought the album "Tightrope" on VINYL and still treasure it in my collection. Leaving LA is my favourite track on the album, although they are all brilliant .
Are the band still together and performing?
Kind regards from the UK

You must be joking kid, Deliverance and this kind of music is positive energy, great band, hi to your dad!
AORCrazy 2 years ago
I am very happy to see that there are people who still remember Deliverance.
My dad was one of the singers.
And I am going down the same road.
If you're curious, just go onto YouTube and listen to "Sweeter Than Wine".

CHFI in Toronto still occasionally plays it. Is your Dad Paul Janz? I love his greatest hits CD.

@NatalieJanz Are you Paul Janz's niece? Wow, I had no idea this was a Canadian band! This is such a fantastic song. That's so neat.

"Must a man always remember?".

Thanks for posting.
It is hard to find the lyrics to this, as apparently the writer doesn't want them published.
What is the last line of the chorus, after "Take me away / don't wanna stay" ?
Thanks!
