  • My goodness! Who knew Sandie Shaw could have such a 'tude, especially toward someone giving her a platform to promote her music as Cilla did here?

  • Have to say Cilla is rank bad. It's amazing she was so popular back then. Also love the BBC special effects :)

  • Thank Goodness for british bands like the who, the Kinks, the Rolling stones and the Beatles!! otherwise the 60's would have been full of this childish uninteresting cheesy music!

  • there was no love lost between sandie and cilla, and it shows. their dialogue is forced and uncomfortable to watch. following her eurovision win sandie demanded to be introduced as MISS sandie shaw, and she refused to duet with cilla. years later cilla commented that off camera sandie looked like jack palance.

  • Interesting to note that all of the performances are live not mimed as they are on the pop shows of the time. Obviously this show is pitched at a different and older audience expecting a more intimate (read authentic) performance.

  • this is just smashing !!! love it .. thanx ..Lyndloo..

  • I think the key to her success was that she had the looks and manner of the girl at the supermarket checkout but she could still sing and host a TV show well.

  • I think that after puppet on a string, was followed next year by 'those were the days' by Mary Hopkins' I may be wrong-steve

  • Those were the Days was not a Eurovision song. Mary Hopkins has "knock knock! Who's there?" for Eurovison.

After Sandie was Cliff with Congratulations and Lulu with Boom Bang A Bang (another winner).

  • Yes, this is Cilla's 1968 series; her theme song, "Step Inside Love", was written especially for her by Paul McCartney.

  • Well, the fellowship of young Scouse talent.

  • thanks for posting. vintage britsh tv!

  • I'll bet Austin Powers loved this show! lol

  • much of the BBC's archive consists of shows made in colour but only a black and white film print from copies made to sell abroad exist as many of the original master tapes were wiped to save money not envisaging things like video

  • Colour TV was only available in small doses on bbc2 in 1968, bbc1 was all b/w till the following year. Would love to have all the Cilla shows on DVD!

  • blimey, I think I remember seeing this prgramme when I was 6. I still think Sandie Shaw was the coolest of them all ;-) All nice memories though, thanks for posting it.

  • I agree with you -Sandie is mega top!!!!such class...

  • lol- i was all of ten!!! what do you remember from back then??? thunderbirds?, hr puffenstuff?, jeez help me out lol

  • Colour TV wa sin the UK in 1967 I can remember having the TV installed, it was made of teak!! I recall watching Jean Moreton with Tinger and Tucker in colour and being fascinated by it.

  • iloved cilla when i was 5 lol

  • Lovely clip. I love these nostalgic items which remind me of my childhood.

  • Never seen Sandie looking so good, great act

  • yes what a babe she is!!!!

  • Love it top class i would love to watch all Cillas

shows frm the 1960s early 1970s and go to some of the the great fooball matches back then todays lot are so overrated there was a buzz back then for pop music

football & shows like the wonderfull Cilla.

  • i dont believe colour tv came to the uk untill 1969.

  • didn't know cilla had own show ! great footage ! !very funky clothes !

  • It's like a walking Biba advert! Sandie Shaw is wearing such a stylish wig and beautiful clothes and Cilla's lean elegance perfectly suited the times. I was unaware that Cilla had such a nice voice, too.

  • Great jobs from Cilla, Sandie, and Cliff. I've never seen Sandie's hair like that - kind of a cotton candy effect. I like it. Sandie's performance of "Puppet on a String" sounds even better than the one in the Eurovision contest the year before.

  • I love Cilla and sandy, but sandy was better looking i think!

  • and the youngsters ask "Cilla Black sings?......."

This show is still fondly remembered.Produced in glorious monochrome.

  • I read a lot of articles about Cilla, but our local rock station never played any of her songs. Nice to finally hear what she sounds like. Thanks for sharing these!

  • I believe that this edition of The Cilla Black Show is from February 1968. Cliff's "Congratulations" was released as a single on 13th March 1968 after being selected as United Kingdom's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, which was held at the Royal Albert Hall on 6th April 1968.

  • Was this not broadcast in color by 1968?

  • I think BBC colour was first broadcast on BBC2, and then after 7pm! BBC1 seemed to alternate between colour & black & white for a few years after

  • fantastic! brings back good memories...remember it all first time round!

  • Thank you for posting this! I wasnt even born in the 60's, but I love every bit of this nostalgia i can find!

  • wow loved cilla and this show was a ratings winner in the 60s

  • 'Rumbers' is correct about Cliff Richard singing the winning song, "Congratulations" being from the 12th March 1968 'Cilla' show. However, so was the rest of this video, although the other guests' (Mike Yarwood and Terry Scott & Hugh Lloyd) parts have been edited out, as has the presentation to the writers of the winning song!

I can confirm this from information I have in both video and written form.

    Regards,

    Dave.

  • Thanks for the help

  • Hi TV Times

this show was shown on TV Heaven on Channel 4 more than a decade back. Its really the highlights of Cilla's Spring 1968 series from the BBC but the Cliff parts with Eurovision are from 12th March 68 edition. Cliff had sung all six songs the previous week 5th March. Series very unusually survives at the BBC

  • This is totally brilliant. LOVE Cilla Black! How awesome is this - especially when you realise that the singing is live, not pre-recorded. This is from 1968. Sandie Shaw is beautiful too!

  • Very nice footage!
