thank you for the input. interestingly, I play this in the same key as jerry does. I think the answer simply lies in the fact that he has a richer sounding voice than me. I might try keying it down to suit my voice.

If I may so bold: the voice is a bit too high-pitched for Ray Charles or Jerry Reed (unless you want to put your own flavour to this song, you should try to lower the timbre of your voice, just to 'see'); the guitar playing is divine!

@FunkyFellaDaBassist Well, it is acoustic simply because I'm not plugged in--and the guitar has nylon strings which technically makes it a classical guitar. but the style isn't really classical. more blues.
