This is a fantastic piece of music both lyrically and melodically. This song rests my soul and mind. Because of this song, I went to MJ's web site to read more about him, although I knew who he was during the 70s and 80s. I would like to know what TV show this clip came from. Last summer I went to a song writing workshop and met Hugh Prestwood, who wrote That's That. Another of MJs wonderful songs. During the workshop Hugh talked at length about That's That, and MJ.
Awesome talent. I had the privilege to see him in concert several times, even shake his hand. He is just great. Wish more of his songs were posted here.
Sheer talent this man. Gives me the chills. When I saw him play for the first time it was with the "one that got away". I recently uploaded another deep one of his for my family (and myself), "dirty hands, dirty faces" about the father/son relationship. Thanks Michael!

Michael has the ability to reach into your heart, and express himself with the feelings from your heart. Hearing him in person, is one of the best concerts ever. Great performer, he sings for each person in the audience, as a individual. His minor in college was journalism, so he could be a critic if he couldn't make it. LOL
I saw Michael in one of his rare concerts earlier this year and he is still a magnificent composer and performer. If you get a chance to see him, grab it.
I first heard Michael with my now wife in Fort Lauderdale's Musician Exchange - I didn't know he sang Bluer than Blue, which I didn't really care for. But when he sang That's That I knew I was in front of a great composer - when I went back to Canada I tried to buy his CDs on line.
You are so right usrt. I'm not a daddy, I might vote, and I go to bed drunk (usually having played this song at least once) but he got to me. Message beautifully conveyed...as you said...BRILLIANT!
@Culieoriginal Point taken...guess because a man is singing it and men do tend to be more restless in that midlife period. I am guessing when you hear this you have a certain man on your mind that was once in your life?
@usrt46 I don't even know... the lyric is a description of a calm and composed, responsible citizen of middle age, they way he looks at himself. I view myself in a similar manner - although I'm sure an unexpected phone call would cause me to search and analyse in much the same way. But frankly, I like thinking of the wild days back then and this song takes me there.
I have two cds recorded live from Minnesota's Orchestra Hall. 1982 and 1984. They were simulcasted on the radio those years. They are my favorite cds. I was at the shows and had a friend record them off the radio. It is all just like this.
I just had the rare opportunity to see Michael perform live in Evanston, Illinois last night. A great guitarist and consumate entertainer, he had the audience alternately in stitches with humorous stories and songs and then reflective with his songs of love and life. If you get a chance to see him, go for it!
I rediscovered him yesterday. I haven't heard him since the early 1980s. It was like running into an old friend. I love his voice especially. I hope to see him in a live performance soon. My fingers are crossed.
I'd marry the guy, he is that great a singer and guitar player. Does anybody have videos of his older songs, especially his first album///there is a breeze.
MJ is an amazing talent. I saw him in concert twice while I was in college at St. John's Univ. in Minnesota. To this day those performances were some of the best I've ever experienced...and I've been to a lot of great concerts. MJ, please come to St. Louis!
absoulutely right! He is a very skilled guitar player...still is. and that voice! I have most of his CDs in my car. My days usually end up mega-stressed. I slap one of those babies in....and presto! I'm relaxed. Cheaper than the 1/5th of vodka it used to take.
Wow... I remember these songs when i was a kid.... funny thing i met him today and didnt put 2 and 2 together. i ran his name in a musician search cause of the platinum records on his wall. I met Chuck Yeager the same way.
Ahhhh, talent. Something forsaken today for looks or physical appearance. Michael stands head and shoulders above most "artists". But the powers that be would rather he danced and lip synced.
It pisses me off that this man isn't more well known! He clearly can sing his ass off. Saw him a couple weeks ago. He still sings and plays unbelievably. Voice like a big stick a butta!
What a great song! Anyone know what album this was on? I can't find it online at either Rhapsody or iTunes. Michael, by the way, is recovering from open heart surgery. See his website at mjblue-dot-com for updates.
I second the motion - absolutely! I was given that LP when I was a junior in H.S. and it has served as a lifelong 'soundtrack' of sorts, even 30+ years later. If I could put one free recording in everyone's CD changer, it would be "For All You Mad Musicians", by Michael Johnson.
wonderful!! I love this guy! I saw him doin a show in Jackson Wyoming years ago, my fovorite concert of all time. I would love to have a dvd of his live show. The cd's don't do justice to what he can do with just him and a guitar!! My all time favorite guitar player. Love this guy!!!
gosh, i miss this guy! I actually saw him around 1978 in Duluth Mn. I had one of his albums and wish I could get a CD or two...anybody heard the songs "rooty-toot-toot for the moon" or "25 words or less" ??
I've heard those songs as I watched Michael play numerous times in Rockford IL at Charlotte's Web. My parents took me to see him many times.. some of my best memories as a child...
"..singing...rooty toot toot for the moon, It's the biggest star I've ever seen. It's a pearl of wisdom, a slice of green cheese, burning just like kerosine......"
I actually came here looking for "25 Words or Less". I have an LP from the late 70's and it's always been one of my favorites. I've never heard this song before and it just blew me away. What a great picture he paints!
MJ is a singer's singer. He gets away with so much that the rest of us only aspire to. Sure would be nice to see more MJ videos on this site, or, better yet, the ability to purchase a DVD of Michael in concert! He doesn't get to a lot of places in the US on a regular basis where his music is revered.
He is the best, a voice that touches your heart. The guitar is an extension of his arm. Best of all, he seems to be a good man, very witty. See him in person!
I could never remember who this guy was util I found youtube. Any way, so nice that I can see the singer behind the song. Thanks for the video, keep then coming.
my grandfather wrote that song and sent it to michael johnson!!!!
