@Zappafan1980 Come on dude you clearly don't know what you are talking about.
First. The audio is shit, because the video quality isn't good. So that makes it clearly dificult to jugde any note played well.
Now. Steve Vai won a Grammy...more than one just to know. Is out there for more than 30 years playing, can go through all the music genre with ease. And for sure, can IMPROVISE. He got exp for that, talen and more.
Plz, limit Steve just to Composer wans't really smart...
WHAAT Steve Vai can go though every music genre with ease ?
I never heard him play, Classic, Fusion Jazz, or Blues Rock,
I never heard him improvise well, i own ALL the G 3 DVD s where he s on and he s way worse then Joe Satriani or John Petrucci or Eric Johnson when it comes to imrovising
I own Passion and Warfare, Alien Love Secrets and Ultra Zone so i might know what im talkin about
@Zappafan1980 Yes he can go through any music genre with ease. Just because you never saw him play the style doesn't means he is not capable. Just look at the guys technique, record, performance and etc. If you play guitar you might understand what I'm saying.
You may be right that he doesn't improve well "sometimes" but say he is an composer and not a improviser is just nonsense.
You own the cds thats fine. But looks like you didn't pay much attention yet...
@Zappafan1980 wow dude, you're a zappa fan. he played all those genre's when he played for zappa (ie play raggae in 7/8, i hear linda ronstadt is looking for a guitarist...). from what i have heard, he doesn't like jazz that much. as for improvisation i thought he was phenomenal but you're allowed your biases.
@Zappafan1980 Frank hired the young Steve Vai to transcribe all of his music; and occasionally play the odd solo as well. Transcribing for Frank Zappa is like trying to assemble a jumbo jet with a hand-held screwdriver.
haha at the end dweezil and steve are like "screw this i'm outta here." you can expect nothing less from someone as eccentric as steve, great stuff right there
awesome jam. once petrucci went bear mode his fingers fired lazers into the audience and he killed everyone at the same time he was in time warp speed and made Vais guitar breakdown using mental telepathy which resulted in Petrucci giant muscles afterwards
this was just outstanding. one of the best concerts i have ever been to. before this, dream theater was just a band i really enjoyed but didnt follow closely. now i think it is safe to say they are one of my top 10 favorite bands. it was an absolutely flawless performance.
@PhilosopherOnWeed I feel exactly the opposite way. Don't get me wrong, I love some of Satch's stuff, but other than Surfin' and Satch Boogie I don't really feel like he's good at making melodies. Then there's Dream Theater.
@PancakesoftheLove Dream theater is ver repetitve. They are ment to be progressive, but they are standing still. No really forward motion they just repeat themselves again and again. Great musicians though. Satch on the other hand keeps experimenting and knows how to write weird but catchy melodies. I still want Dream Theater to make a song with a good melody, but they are to busy wanking their asses of in instrumental passages that lead nowhere. Shame because the whole band is very talented.
@Mordain607 Well...In The Presence of Enemies has some good riffs, but if that's your definition of ''progressive'' then a lot of bands in the metal genre could be considered progressive. The last few albums of Dream Theater had little to no inspiration sadly.
Well the riffs just keep flowing into each other and it has some amazing breaks and whatnot. I certainly think it's progressive. And yes, I think the last couple of DT albums didn't have much inspiration, but I think they had a couple of good songs each (In the Presence of Enemies, Panic Attack)

@JtR1666
That is exactly what i was thinking
I am a Real Fan of everyone of those as Solo Artist
But after 6 Minutes i was so bored of the Soulless Shredding of Steve Vai that i had to turn it off
I really like Steve Vai First 3 CD s but the man is just horrible when he needs to improvise a Solo
He s a Composer not a improviser
Plus Portnoys drum sound is to loud

@gumbilicious1
Steve Vai played ONLY the Rythem guitar when he played with Frank from 1981 to 1984
He only had Solos on You Are What You Is, Tinseltown Rebellion and Them Or Us
AND he didnt Compose these songs so it doesnt count for me sorry
And yeah i know he s theoretical capable of playing that stuff because he studied music for 2 years at Berklee
BUT HE DOESNT DO IT
Like i said i dont hate Vai

@PancakesoftheLove Nah..Satriani, Dweezil and Vai then. Petrucci isn't as creative as Satriani. He is very good though, but not as creative.

@PhilosopherOnWeed Wait, what? Erotomania is definitely progressive. Acid Rain is definitely progressive.
They stay there, but they variate and build on top of what they've got.
PancakesoftheLove 1 year ago
@PhilosopherOnWeed
Not really. On some of there songs, but listen to "Learning to Live". Just keeps progressing.
For a more recent example, try "In the Presence of Enemies". It's just amazing riff after amazing riff.
