Quick question for this guy: Why do you advocate gun control, or saving your life, when,in Matthew 16:25, it says "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it?"
Quick question for this guy why do advocate gun control when,in Matthew 16:25, it says "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it?"
@evelsteev- Jesus was not talking about self defense. He was talking about becoming a disciple. However, Jesus DID talk about self defense at Luke 22:35-38.
@DeadeyeKeith I doubt it, since that passage was more about sacrificing their old lives for their new ones. After all, could two swords really defend twelve men?
@evelsteev- Thank you for making my point. Sacrificing the old life for the new life is called... DISCIPLESHIP! ;-) No, two swords cannot adequately defend twelve men. That is why Jesus said in verse 36, if you don't have one, get one. Again, thanks for making my point.
@evelsteev- You are misinterpreting the Biblical passage and I don't fear being killed. I'm just responsibly arming myself. Jesus doesn't have a problem with it. Why do you?
@DeadeyeKeith I don't .I just want to know why Christians are so faithful, but at the same time so cautious. If you have faith in an afterlife, why does being killed scare you? If you're not scared, then why carry a gun? Think about it.
@evelsteev- Good question. I am faithful to be obedient and I am cautious because I am responsible. Again, dying does not scare me. I carry a gun to be faithful in my duties to protect my family and myself. I see it the same as a seat belt. I do not drive until my whole family is buckled up. Anything less is negligent.
@DeadeyeKeith Sure it does. If I couldn't live forever, as Christianity proposes, then why would I worry about losing my life, or being killed? If I didn't live forever, then I would do everything in my power to protect myself, so that I could live as long as possible. It's totally plausible.
@evelsteev- Plausibility does not equate necessity. You COULD look at it that way, but you do not HAVE to. It does not NECESSARILY follow. Just because I believe in an afterlife does not mean I'm in a hurry to get there.
@DeadeyeKeith Sorry, I don't identify not worrying about defending themselves the same as actively killing themselves. They're two different things. One is willful, one isn't.
@evelsteev- If you take your point to it's logical conclusion, then it shouldn't matter if it is willful or not. What you don't take into consideration is that if God has me here, then my responsibilities HERE are more important for the moment.
Do you have anything of any real substance to this discussion? You keep throwing up points that either don't matter or don't follow. Are you really trying to understand my position or are you just looking for a target at which to shoot? Pun intended.
@DeadeyeKeith Death doesn't matter if it's willful or not? I disagree.
If God has responsibilities for us here, then why have an afterlife?
My points matter to me, because, for the life of me, I can't see why someone who believes that there's an afterlife (which is supposed to be BETTER than this one), would care, either way, about what happens to his physical body?
Analogy: If I won millions of dollars, in the lottery, then why would I worry about not having money any more?
@evelsteev- The afterlife is better for those whose sins are forgiven, but that is another topic. I care what happens to my physical body for a number of reasons. The first of which is, well, here I am. I am in this decaying flesh for the time being so my responsibilities are for here and now until God changes my orders. I don't understand why it is so difficult for you to grasp. We have a different set of responsibilities for each life. For now, God wants me to live so I defend my life.

Keith, on religious issues we're on opposite ends of the spectrum but regarding gun rights, you're dead on. Notice how the cities with the highest crime rates are the ones with the most strict gun laws. What doesn't the anti-gun groups get about statistics that are in front of their noses? Criminals are most likely to break into a house where they know the owner is probably unarmed.
each year honest gun owners take out more evil criminals and this burns the ass of the gun grabbers, they need victims on the news so they can talk about the victims at the wine tasting partys. The gun grabbers in govt. know they can not have tyrant sex until the guns are removed from the dirty masses.

@DeadeyeKeith Well, the bible quote says it all, no? Why do you need to save your life, with a gun, if Jesus is telling you to NOT save it?

@DeadeyeKeith I hear you, but I see a duality, that's all. That duality being:
1. No being negligent
2. Being faithful in an afterlife.
evelsteev 1 year ago
@evelsteev- I'm not following you. Please clarify.
DeadeyeKeith 1 year ago
@DeadeyeKeith I hear you, but I see a duality, that's all. That duality being:
1. Not being negligent
2. Having faith in an afterlife.
So which one is it? If the next life is more important, why is our present one important?
evelsteev 1 year ago
@evelsteev- There is no duality here. Let me demonstrate by using the opposite of your supposed duality.
1. Being negligent.
2. Having no faith in the afterlife.
Does it make sense to be negligent if there is no afterlife? No. Not anymore than it would if the opposite were true.
DeadeyeKeith 1 year ago
@DeadeyeKeith But if we didn't have an afterlife, to begin with, then we'd be LESS negligent, no?
evelsteev 1 year ago
@evelsteev- Not necessarily. Your whole line of reasoning is a non sequitur. One does not necessitate the other. It simply does not follow.

@DeadeyeKeith right, but even though your "responsibilities" are here, isn't the afterlife MORE important?
evelsteev 1 year ago
@evelsteev- So what are you saying? All Christians should kill themselves because we believe in an afterlife that is more important than this life?

It is good to know that we agree on something! Btw, I use the same logic in all of my series. ;-)

So true and I recently read somewhere that 99.8 '/, of rapists prefer their victims to be unarmed.
