IMO, it would have been better for her not to perform at all. It was almost an insult. Understandably she has to save her voice for events where the money is, but still....
This the same case with Mariah Carey live performance during 94-96 (if I'm not mistake), for video live version, that was edited (and replace 'imperfect' notes with perfect ones in post performance). But I'm glad Celine didn't 'replace' anything, and just 'remove' something in this performance!
I 100% believe this was LIVE performance. The CD audio version was edited out from this live version, to remove noise of crowded people & some unused Celine's melisima high notes. Just look to her mouth articulate, some her breath air sound during singing clearly audible in this live version, and it exactly match with her gesture, before edited out. It almost impossible to be fake!
For those that say this was lipped. Remember that the sound we hear is what the is pricked up directly from the microphones (Celine's, the piano etc.) We would not hear all the echoes from the stadium as this can be edited out of the sound, as it is being recorded. Because we are hearing what the microphone is picking up it would be in-sink with the screens. To someone that is there would hear a different sound.

one of the stupidest things i ever did: i gave away my ticket to the opening ceremonies because i had to work early the next day. i watched this on tv that night, hating myself more than ever.
One more astounding talent to thank our Canadian neighbors for sharing with us. I don't believe she was syncing, but who cares? Along with that huge choir, Celine created something truly special.
For me, this is the international version of the Whitney Houston US Anthem performance - both women left people uplifted and amazed.

Is it has been so long ago ? 1996 ? I remember beeing in front of my TV watching this and at first, thinking: Oh, no! Not Céline! (I'm French quebecer, but at the time, I liked well, metal rock). Then it happened...The chorus was so huge, the music was so loud, the athletes from everywhere were there and Céline really did delivered a stunning performance. By the end of it, I was crying!
Of course, that was before sept. 11. Everybody, still believed in the Power of The Dream.

@PuteraSocrates I'm not sure if she lipsynched or not, but one thing is true...Olympic ceremony directors know a LOT can go wrong and they know there are BILLIONS watching so they expect, demand and create perfection (or at least as best they can). So that often means that, yes, they voice over the musical performances. The organizers of Beijing did it, Vancouver did it, Sydney did it. The performers in such big events to what they are told. They do not run the show.
@PuteraSocrates Thats what happens when performances are lipped. It looks like its not, bands, orchestras, choirs etc. I worship Celine but this is most definitely lipped. Listen to the studio version and this version at the same time. It's all exactly the same except for one ad lip that was surely added in the studio. Lipping is especially done at evens like this and Superbowl to avoid technical errors on live TV. I love her immensely but im not in denial about it either. One of her best songs.
@PuteraSocrates For audio reasons (no practical way to mic the choir) as well as the fact that there was a significant sound delay between Celine and the back of the choir, this was prerecorded and lipsynched, David Foster and the orchestra pretended to play, Celine and the choir pretended to sing.
They typically prerecord a sizable chunk of the "live" music for athletic events like this, even Pavarotti lipsynced in Torino (that was mostly due to the frigid temperatures that night).
@PuteraSocrates I absolutely LOVE Celine but sometimes she lipsynchs for huge performances like this. Not because she can't sing (obviously) but because the stadium is so big that sounds echo around it and it wouldnt match with her mouth on the screen. It's called pre-recorded, they record her singing it live before and then she lip synchs to that. Also the studio version on the album My Love sounds EXACTLY like this one so it might be. But that doesn't interfere with her amazing performance.
@jspankin Yes, that is true. My main point is that David Foster is on the piano. He may not be a Duke Ellington, but it's insulting to think he would mime a performance, especially at a major world event like this. Live music, ipso facto she is also live--you can even hear stadium echoes in some verses especially on her high notes. Anyone that knows anything about stage/musical production will know that it is easy to synch live voice to pre-recorded music (karaoke), but not the opposite.

From the muscle movement you can match the breath and the sound. There is no way she lip sang this one. Amazing, one of the best live performance I have ever seen. Celine is God.

The answer is: This what made the USA great!!! They don't practice protectionism. As long as a person has talents and popular at the time (which Celine did in 1996), they will earn a spot. I was very disappointed that all singers at the Vancouver games were Canadians, but to be fair, all acts at Beijing were Chinese as well, but I thought Canada was more open that this.
@theintranet I totally agree with you, Canada should have had singers from different nationalities, but on the same token Céline Dion is an American product, she lives in USA, she mainly performs in USA and she became an American citizen. David Foster is also Canadian.
This is not the same as the recorded one (studio version) if you have a listen to the recorded one the note she sings @ 3:50 is not included in the studio version!
It all went as planned, and so I believe what you are hearing is, in fact, live Celine. What you are hearing from the orchestra and chorus is all recorded, but inside the stadium, it was both the pre-recorded stuff and the live performance.
What I recall is that those recordings of us (the chorus) were blended with the mics that were on us in the actual stadium. For the soloists, however (Celine Deion, Jesse Norman, etc), the recordings were only in reserve for use in case the mics were failing to feed into either the stadium or to the live feed.
OK, this is crazy, but I'm actually one of the performers in this. I sang in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus during this time. I am one of the people in a choir robe on the ramp behind Celine Deion. We prerecorded everything so that no matter what technical things went wrong, there would be something to play on air.
Celine is actually in hormonal treatments in the hope of having a baby, didn`t you know? She`s exhausted because of this, and so she declined the invitation to sing for the Vancouver Olympics... Now stop your bitching around and search for infos next time before making silly comments-.-
Just to tell you ohouui, Celine is my favourite female singer and Gregory Lemarchal is my fave male singer. Having Celine as my fave singer I have the right to criticize her if she can't represent Canada at the Olympics. She didn't even make a video to play for the games.

Celine Dion is such a flake! I'm sure other Canadians remember in her early days where Celine said see would NEVER sing in English and in interviews she refused to speak in English! Ask any Canadian! She was on either MuchMusic or City TV in Canada and she refused to speak to the VJ in English! Now, look at her. Belting out the music in English and living in the US (which she used to criticise and hated Americans)! What a hypocrite! Blah!

Is it has been so long ago ? 1996 ? I remember beeing in front of my TV watching this and at first, thinking: Oh, no! Not Céline! (I'm French quebecer, but at the time, I liked well, metal rock). Then it happened...The chorus was so huge, the music was so loud, the athletes from everywhere were there and Céline really did delivered a stunning performance. By the end of it, I was crying!
Of course, that was before sept. 11. Everybody, still believed in the Power of The Dream.

Who says she lipped? I guess DAVID FOSTER on the piano was just tapping the piano keys just for the heck of it right? The 100+ musicians were also just miming-- never mind it's the Olympics and all. The whole world is watching.. who cares? And oh yeah, all those people in that huge choir are just stage props, pretending to sing. They're all in cahoots with Celine.. Come on already! If you don't like Celine, go watch a different video then.

He's a world renowned pianist, and to insinuate he is miming along with other musicians to "add the feeliing of live performance" in this video is an insult to all musicians everywhere. @PuteraSocrates I'm not sure if she lipsynched or not, but one thing is true...Olympic ceremony directors know a LOT can go wrong and they know there are BILLIONS watching so they expect, demand and create perfection (or at least as best they can). So that often means that, yes, they voice over the musical performances. The organizers of Beijing did it, Vancouver did it, Sydney did it. The performers in such big events to what they are told. They do not run the show.

@PuteraSocrates Thats what happens when performances are lipped. It looks like its not, bands, orchestras, choirs etc. I worship Celine but this is most definitely lipped. Listen to the studio version and this version at the same time. It's all exactly the same except for one ad lip that was surely added in the studio. Lipping is especially done at evens like this and Superbowl to avoid technical errors on live TV. I love her immensely but im not in denial about it either. One of her best songs.

@PuteraSocrates For audio reasons (no practical way to mic the choir) as well as the fact that there was a significant sound delay between Celine and the back of the choir, this was prerecorded and lipsynched, David Foster and the orchestra pretended to play, Celine and the choir pretended to sing.
They typically prerecord a sizable chunk of the "live" music for athletic events like this, even Pavarotti lipsynced in Torino (that was mostly due to the frigid temperatures that night).

@PuteraSocrates I absolutely LOVE Celine but sometimes she lipsynchs for huge performances like this. Not because she can't sing (obviously) but because the stadium is so big that sounds echo around it and it wouldnt match with her mouth on the screen. It's called pre-recorded, they record her singing it live before and then she lip synchs to that. Also the studio version on the album My Love sounds EXACTLY like this one so it might be. But that doesn't interfere with her amazing performance.

@jspankin Yes, that is true. My main point is that David Foster is on the piano. He may not be a Duke Ellington, but it's insulting to think he would mime a performance, especially at a major world event like this. Live music, ipso facto she is also live--you can even hear stadium echoes in some verses especially on her high notes. Anyone that knows anything about stage/musical production will know that it is easy to synch live voice to pre-recorded music (karaoke), but not the opposite.

This performance was so amazingly perfect that they included it on the album, taking of the applause and the stadium echoes, and one little part of Celine`s singing at the end. This was sang before the album was even created LMFAO! So those saying she`s lipping STFU it`s just that she`s too great..

The answer is: This what made the USA great!!! They don't practice protectionism. As long as a person has talents and popular at the time (which Celine did in 1996), they will earn a spot. I was very disappointed that all singers at the Vancouver games were Canadians, but to be fair, all acts at Beijing were Chinese as well, but I thought Canada was more open that this.

It all went as planned, and so I believe what you are hearing is, in fact, live Celine. What you are hearing from the orchestra and chorus is all recorded, but inside the stadium, it was both the pre-recorded stuff and the live performance.

What I recall is that those recordings of us (the chorus) were blended with the mics that were on us in the actual stadium. For the soloists, however (Celine Deion, Jesse Norman, etc), the recordings were only in reserve for use in case the mics were failing to feed into either the stadium or to the live feed.

OK, this is crazy, but I'm actually one of the performers in this. I sang in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus during this time. I am one of the people in a choir robe on the ramp behind Celine Deion. We prerecorded everything so that no matter what technical things went wrong, there would be something to play on air.
