Besides Goldsmith's amazing score, the fact that they shot the movie in Indiana with Indiana HS players as the players on the team is the key. It's authentic. The best example is that the director forgot to tell everyone what to do after Jimmy hits his last shot. Everyone knew how to naturally react because they had been in that situation before.

I was just about to comment on why this movie is one of the most enjoyable, well-done sports movies of all time, but this comment distracted me. To say that anyone under twenty is automatically ignorant is impressively ironic in its own example of extreme ignorance. I could say that anyone over thirty is only worth their 'death and taxes', but I don't, because unlike you, I have enough wisdom to know that everyone is an individual, and ignorance and wisdom run equal through all ages.
